May I suggest that you DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR those UMC 2A03 clones? These CPUs are the reason why, in 2016, we still have NES-on-a-Chip clones with the oh-so-common reversed duty cycles problem. If you put a UMC CPU into an NES, you might as well just have a Famiclone as the sound will be quite dramatically altered because of this problem (blame UMC for shoddy reverse-engineering of the chip).
UMC PPUs, on the other hand, are another story, though they do output more saturated colors, so you may need to make some adjustments to the video amp to get the colors looking right.
Also, I believe the UA6527P is meant for PAL 50Hz NES hardware.

How about using CPU and PPU from famicoms? like those with real bad shells and so on?

The main filter cap is a Panasonic (Matsushita) the T shaped vent gives it away. A stylized M is their logo.
Maybe I've been in too many pieces of equipment over the years it's not too often I see a brand (good or bad) I don't recognize :-).

I didn't see an M on the main cap...

    • @Bushougoma

+GameTechUS At 11:39 you can see the letters FR next to the rated temperature it's the Panasonic FR series.
Wow it seems the FR series doesn't have any branding on it I stand corrected. What a bonehead move from Panasonic it makes them that much harder to identify.
For future reference two major cap manufacturers that I know of have specially stamped vents.
Panasonic caps usually have T shaped vents and Rubycon caps usually have K shaped vents.

im surprised no one has gotten the specs for those chips and made repros of them, though i do remember you and kevtris talking about someone who made a repro of the ppu but that it was pal instead of ntsc which sucks, but it makes me wonder how much the cost would be to make new ones im sure the technical specs for them are out on the net some where

    • @TheTurnipKing
      @TheTurnipKing 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+luke9511 They were heavily cloned and cost reduced by pirates over the years. It's the basis of "modern" NES-On-a-chip technology.
The problem isn't so much that cloning the chips is expensive, it's that producing new chips would be prohibitively expensive compared to, say, using a cheap low end ARM and software emulation.

The main cap on the board looks like a Panasonic/Matsushita one.

My friend hooked a cap backwards two days ago. Saw the LED on, it stayed on for 10 sec then e exploded in his face. Luckily it his his forehead and not his eye. It was a decent sized one too. He's got a big bump and cut on his forehead now. It's pretty funny though.

I would like to see if the TA-03NP1 / TA-03N (NTSC) from Aliexpress would be equivalent to the NES CPU and a test video.

Great video. Good timing for me, I was trying to install NES RGB today, even had to order a second unit (Because I bunked the install), but now my Famicom AV is dead (just humming/buzzing), even w/out NES RGB. Going to try taking CPU and PPU from a classic system. Any idea why the PPU and CPU are common to fail?

Hey so just out of curiosity do you come across allot of SNES consoles with bad CPU's and bad PPU's? I ask because I have about 16 SNES consoles and all except two are 100% dead. Recapping them doesn't work, replacing the 7805 doesn't work and also using known good cartridge connectors doesn't work. I also have two other consoles that have issues with the controller input. They both have the start button constantly on but only when I press up on the d pad and also oddly enough pressing the left shoulder button pauses the game. I've tried swapping out the controller ports and also resoldering the ribbon cable socket on the SNES main board, which doesn't help.

I think you can salvage a UA6527 from a lot of famiclones, probably in the russian Dendy's. The sound is different though, so it might not be ideal.. it seems to be terrible, actually. :(
    Here's a thread about it: forums.nesdev.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10729

I'm trying to get away from salvaging from one console to save another. The 2a03 chips usually are clones and mislabeled, i've heard they are usually pal not ntsc.
