Permanent night shift premium. Double decker premium. Weekend premium. Overtime premium at £40 per hour. Biggest problem with the industry is the likes of stobarts driving down wages and expecting people to put in over 60hours a week, doing the job of a driver, warehouse operative and then unloading at the recycling centre. I got out the industry after 4 years as the Mrs got pregnant and it was too much with the expected hours to chase the money. You can earn a good wage on the wagons, but the majority of the drivers doing it are tramping or have no real home life (i know there are exceptions). Just passed my class 1 first time with NVQ in LGV and going for my ADR now looking for tramping work target wage 60K, in talks with one company right now and open to offers.
There's a company local to me who pays £50K right off the bat for new drivers, they do a three week training course once you have your license, and it's mainly tramping, but tramping looks good & the company is sorted. Their jobs don't come up that often though, that's the only issue.
The wage is very dependant on the area you live and the only hgv job that seems to have a consistent good wage all over the country is a grab lorry driver but every other type of specialised hgv are dependant on area..........the class 2 tipper firms down south west are paying less per hour than a local fruit delivery firm on 3.5t vans.
Class 2 here, £14.80ph - 1 year experience. 43hrs a week. Im giving it another year and then moving onto class 1, i like class 2 butnits basically less pay than class 1. Usually i deliver at construction sites that are generally in the middle of nowhere. I guess i got the newbies job role that nobody wants, but I actually enjoy it. I do very much dislike driving into scotland, no offence but the motorway rules and weather generally annoy me. Once i was going past Carlisle and towards scotland, dvsa pulled me over on the border, that took 50 mins. No issues, Was my first time.
I do class 2 on duscarts, the base wage is £34k but because its Mon- Fri get double pay bank Holidays and weekends. All overtime 1.5x but sundays double, bonus for working on your own it totals out at about 43k for 45 hours and average about 60 bins a day. Joined a company that would put me through my licence so from a £9ph training wage I'm pretty happy with those wages

These are clearly London rates you get no where near this North of the Midlands, the best paid class 1 get about 40000 to 45000 up North although we don't have to pay the scandalous property and rent prices you Pay down south

The beginning jobs earn a decent wage but the hours are crazy as you get to a better job your wage stays the same but the hours reduce. I am a new pass 9 months in only working 3.5 days a week but will still be clearing an above average wage. If I worked Monday to Friday I would be looking closer 45-50K for day work BUT I would be doing 50-60 hours a week easily. The base wage is not that great and is a daily rate + overtime but we get a self tip bonus for Lidl/Aldi, retention bonus, fuel bonus and meal allowance bonus. It all adds up but due to being on a daily rate it depends on how many hours you do to work out your £ per hour. Some weeks I can average out as low as £14 a hour but some as high as £20. The work is easy though. I did a 15 hour Sunday yesterday but my WTD was only 8 hours.
Passed class 1 in September 21. 1st job paid £21.50 ph agency on nights pushing cages. 💪very hard work for my age (55). I stuck at it for 10 months until it wore me out. Also, I put 2 St on since 2021, so it's not sustainable. I am seriously looking for something with better life balance, which is almost impossible in this career. I'm about to do my practical training. I'm going to get class 1 and 2 at the same time so I have them but I'm going to be looking at working with the class 2 until I have enough experience and confidence to move on to a class 1 job. Can anyone recommend a good industry for class 2 beginners? I had thought tipper work might be a good place to start but I'm not sure.
Tipper work is pretty full on those boys fly around not something i have done regularly done the odd day but would definitely get you some good experience.
@Truck It Prayle I have an auto immune disorder which is fine if I don't overdo manual labour, if I do I will burn my body out quick so I had liked the idea of a tipper as I figured there would be less physical work than multi drops or something. Ultimately tramping up and down Ireland would be what I would like but going str8 to class 1 feels like too much str8 from driving cars or vans. Thanks for your replies anyway I appreciate it.
Cost me 3900 with passing straight to CE from B on second attempt. In perfect world 2500 might be possible with medical, cpc, applying for professional license assuming you pass on first attempt. My advice is to do medical outside of the of school, centre as well as cpc and theory test as you can pass them in your time and then take lessons as it is not always cheaper their way and it can be to much all together. Sadly I did it all through driving academy. Medical was probably cheaper with academy as they got contract with some doctor but once I passed I have to wait forever for cpc due to fuck up on they side as they forgot to put me on waiting list despite paying them about 2800 pounds and calling 3 times a week... no comments. Also I feel my training was insufficient from them as it was mostly around how to pass the test rather how to learn how to drive lol. If possible find place where they can teach on 2 to 1 basis so you drive 4h for example on same day and swap with other student. My second school did this way and I did found it so much better as you not so tired opposite to when you do 1 to 1 whole day. Good to ask around as much as possible.
Join the TA, give them one weekend a month and let them pay for it :) Some companies such as waitrose still run a "warehouse to wheels" program where they will pay for you to get your Class 1. Great Bear/Culina used to have the same scheme running. They pay for everything but you have to work for them for 1 or 2 years (which to be fair shouldnt be an issue as your getting the experience). I used to drive for GB and they are pretty decent to be fair, it's mainly job and knock with long runs so no manual handling and lots of road experience.
Cost me around £2500, that’s including my medical and theory and hazard perseption test. I already had my drivers card and tacho card so didn’t have to pay for mod4 though
@@AntoniOrszykowskiMy training was 2:1 and I hated it as the instructor devoted the majority of his attention to the other trainee and I wasn’t able to ask all the questions I would have liked. As a result I’ve failed my test twice and am considering withdrawing from the process altogether as It is becoming prohibitively expensive. Before I started I had no idea how many people fail to pass their HGV test. Had I known the pass rate was around 50% I probably wouldn’t have started the process and as a result would have avoided wasting so much time and money!!!

And before anyone says to me well exercise in your free time, good luck with that barely get time to spend that cash let alone exercise.
Yeah it's not an easy game, however i do manage to get down the gym but i also realise the hours i do are good compared to most hgv jobs.
Your payment rate as a HGV driver will be heavily dependent on the area of the UK you are employed.
I have passed my hgv class 2 about 2 month ago still waiting for work ,where is the shortage?plus wages here in machester is redicilous most agencies offer 13£ some offer 14£ dificult find 15£ an hour .
It's a joke my friend they say there is a shortage but then only want experienced drivers.. not sure it works like that..
Keep at it though mate you will find something!

Hi guys Im looking for those companies who fund your hgv training. Anyone know anything guys?
Stobarts Maritime Goldstar are others iam sure
@@kevindunham3669 Thanx a lot m8... I appreciate it👏
over 50k u are now taxed at 40% so what is the point earning over 50k
You only get taxed 40% on anything you earn over 50k
I'm about to do my practical training. I'm going to get class 1 and 2 at the same time so I have them but I'm going to be looking at working with the class 2 until I have enough experience and confidence to move on to a class 1 job. Can anyone recommend a good industry for class 2 beginners? I had thought tipper work might be a good place to start but I'm not sure.
Tipper work is pretty full on those boys fly around not something i have done regularly done the odd day but would definitely get you some good experience.
@Truck It Prayle maybe not tippers then lol. I'm hoping for something in the shallow end to begin with
@@stevencorscadden5767 class 2 jobs usual are harder work as there's less driving and more drops, maybe something like travis perkins?
@Truck It Prayle I have an auto immune disorder which is fine if I don't overdo manual labour, if I do I will burn my body out quick so I had liked the idea of a tipper as I figured there would be less physical work than multi drops or something. Ultimately tramping up and down Ireland would be what I would like but going str8 to class 1 feels like too much str8 from driving cars or vans. Thanks for your replies anyway I appreciate it.
7.5 tonne £12.50p per hour
Thanks, how much would you estimate class 1 training would be start to finish and is it okay to just get a class 1 licence
Yeah you can go straight for class 1 now i think its around 1.2k upwards
Class2 here. Conway Hounslow on tanker high pressure jetting £12p/h this is joke! Start my HGV class1 course next week.
Leaving the railway for hgv can’t wait railway was premium money at one point absolute dog shit now
Best of luck with it mate have you booked your test?
@@truckitprayle not as of yet mate Bart £500 short for a full course straight to class 1 just waiting on some back pay should just about cover it then hopefully redundo to keep me up and running until I get my feet under table some where
Class 1 driver here. Doing store delivery. My average earning is between 800 and 1200 per week with holiday rate included (as I work for agency). Midlands
Is that regular work all year round?
@@symbolicof no as I'm agency driver. January February and March are quiet months. 600-800 pw (before tax with holiday included) is average pay for this period. This summer I covered drivers on holiday doing 1300-1800 per week (before tax with holiday included). So it really depends on your flexibility and hours you do.
How many hours a week?
@@Medea007 45-55
We don't earn half as much as we should.
£550 - £600 is usual take home. I've taken £900 for a week once but after stupid hours.... These companies will only start to fill roles when they realise drivers also have a life outside of work... If not, don't expect to stay in business and don't cry when you close down
I m from Srilanka i want to get this licence. 🤔
43k for 40 hours wag and drag
ADR class 8 corrosive tankers. Class 1 national and international. Full week tramping. £56k+ if you hammer the hours. Keeping it legal but going strong.
Just been offered £65k on ADR gas tankers....shift pattern was shocking....no thanks, better the devil you know... 😎
Sounds good to me mate 👍
@truckitprayle it's a brilliant job, on an international week I can do 2 jobs in a 6 days week.....pays the bills, happy days.. 😎
When the price is your life, the money is unimportant....
What does this mean? Any work that requires you to work 40.-50 hours a week is taking your life... what you supposed to do? Not work ?
Like how detailed you explain everything, from your experience are the 7.5t rigid also automatic? Keep up the good work 👍
From what i remember most are manual but like 6 gears.
The company I work for does cage deliveries to restaurants , we get paid 21.61ph for class 2 and class 1 get 23.23 ph + a weekend bonus . I work roughly around 31-33 hrs per week but get paid for 40hrs/week for 50k a year which is fantastic for work life balance and the work is not that hard but some places where we park are really tight .
Where do i sign up 🤣
@@truckitprayle Company is Martin Brower . They got 4 depots around the UK but the highest paying one is in Hemel Hempstead .
Is it still possible to do Ltd or self employed work? I perfer that but seems hard to get. I'm a new driver.
To be honest never been something i have looked into but i believe you can.
Last year before my last payrise, I earned £42k, mainly on Class2 and sometimes I helped out my company on Class 1 shunting, what means, I drove 5-6 miles in 11 hours shift.
It’s crazy the money we slave away for in return of your precious time it’s not right
Grandad rights stopped 1996
Not so because a one eyed driver can drive HGV if they have passed their test prior to 1992.
Not enough 😅
Honestly, £25k would be wonderful for me, so the fact that's entry level is superb.
How does he get these figures I've been class 1 for 31 years and I only get £29000 for the year after tax
Yeah i was talking before tax my friend.
29k after tax is pretty decent mate (depending on the shift pattern your working).
