Angela his tour is tomorrow and this was PERFECT timing to post on Gardening in Phoenix on facebook! Thank you so much for interviewing him so I could share it with our group! So many of your videos get posted there! When people ask me a garden question, I am so very happy to share your website! Sure takes pressure off of my not remembering everything!
Thank you for the video! I love the concept of a greenhouse here in AZ for plant starts and growing winter veggies, am adding a greenhouse to my bucket list. 🤩
I would consider shading your west side with a solar array. Get some juice for the indoor lights while making the thing self sustaining. Great video, love the explanations!
Thank you, thank you, thank you Angela for posting this video! I'm in zone 10a FL and about to put up a greenhouse. I have collected materials for years and done a lot of research to construct an up-cycled greenhouse. I understand the north - south orientation, but I was concerned about the heat and the sun. Now I welcome the southwest shade I will get from my large fish tail palm. I will make sure to add lots of fans to my 10 by 12 space and a cooling system. Thanks again!
Hello from Tucson,AZ !!! I have a greenhouse too but I only use mine during winter so I can have a headstand for Spring . I usually sow my seeds around last week of December . Then by 2nd-3rd week of March I put them in my garden ❤️👩🏻🌾 . Happy Gardening everyone
That was amazing! I never imagined having a greenhouse in the desert, but he thought of everything. Was wondering if he grows anything during the summer in the greenhouse or if plants are more for the other seasons. Thank you for this tour - very informative!
Here is Larry's response "I did last year except in July and August. This year I will be doing it year round given I have the temperatures more under control. Those rectangular grow bags, the planters, and the hydroponics are going to be my focus this year. My goal is to have some cold weather crops grow during the summer"
Excellent! Ty! Fresno ca zone 9b and have been wanting to put in the exact area u spoke of and was told that was a joke area for a greenhouse. Awesome! Ty:)
He lost me once he put grow lights in the greenhouse. Might as well put a swamp cooler, fans and grow lights in your garage and grow the plants there. What's the point of the greenhouse at that point?
Ru from Arizona? I perfectly understand his choices. The summer heat kills EVERYTHING! Unless u have enough land to create a permaculture environment, this makes perfect sense for us living in 10a- Sonoran Desert.
I'm in Texas and have many of the same issues and i am building my second greenhouse. i am putting a solid north west wall (ondura roofing panels and foil wrap insulation) like i did in my first greenhouse. i don't understand why you would have a glass west wall and then build a cement wall to block the light. Seems easier the block the light to begin with. Mine is enclosed in hardware cloth so i don't get rats or mice. i am using polycarbonate this time. the south half of the roof is polycarbonate, the north half is ondura solid roofing. i also have a central ridge vent that goes the length of the greenhouse. it is small 10 x 10 ft greenhouse. my south wall is polycarbonate that is removable in summer. The east side is 1/3 solid wall, 1/3 door with vents and 1/3 permanent polycarbonate. My first greenhouse was sola wrap hoop design with a south roll up wall that worked super nice except my cats liked to climb up it and their nails would puncture it. On super cold night I plan to implement the roll down blanket like they do in Chinese greenhouses.
I remember when it had bark in it . I did the electrical for that . He had the conduit running across the middle had to reroute all the electrical to around the perimeter . Was a rough one he is not lying saying it got to 140 in there it felt like a hit blanket over me constantly sweating looks nicer now ha ha . Heck ya !
Thank you for the tour! I'm curious. Can you use a greenhouse during the hottest part of the year to bring in the potted plants that would die in the heat? Kind of like wintering a plant over, except it would be summering a plant over. That way a plant that would be an annual in Arizona, could end up being a perennial. Does anybody do that with success?
If I can get rid of my big pool and just put greenhouse maybe lose $20k-$25k in equity 😬 so my raised bed are outside and looks like forest and he doesn’t like it 😔🤦🏻♀️ it’s hard enough for me to water 3 different locations can’t put water irrigation where nobody will have an accident falling. So I can’t and will not have a green house soon. Thanks for sharing your lovely greenhouse I’m in zone 9, California 😊👩🌾🙏🏻♥️
I tried running a swamp cooler just like that but it left mineral deposits on everything, like a thin film. I think RO water would mitigate this issue but thats another expense.
I asked Larry - this was his response “If I open up the shades and let the sun in, it never goes below 60, so I have never had to heat it. I can reverse the ceiling fan and blow the warm air through also if needed.”
Screen house is better. It provides a minimum of shade in the summer. Let’s in what rain we get here. Allows air flow to minimize mold fungus issues. Cost far less.
I built a greenhouse in Arizona but I took off the plastic and put on a 30% shade cloth. The plants are happy.
Yes! In inland San Diego zone 10b, and I have the same plan. I need a shade house, not a hot house
Do you have a video?
@@muthoni632 I don't.
Building ours this winter!! We live in AZ, we are zone 10a. I've learned more from you than the "master gardeners" where we live.

This is awesome and informative. I've always wondered about greenhouses here.

Interesting as I’m not that familiar with greenhouses. Thx for sharing.
Put an exhaust fan on one end and a cooler pad on the other end.. drops the inside temp 15-20 degrees in the peak summer heat.
I’m so thankful you made a video about this topic. I recently asked in a Facebook gardening group.

I love learning from others. This man has a beautiful green house!

That natural sunlight plus prolonged light exposure to make sure the plants don't flower during the shorter sun seasons
Some people want to use their garage for their cars.

Sun provides Infinitely more lumens
Thanks! Very informative.

Great ideas, thanks for sharing. I love hearing how different people come up with solutions for problems they face.

Ideally, yes. If you can get the temperature down.
Great Information
Great Video Thanks
Use a shade cloth!

How much warmer do you think a covered patio might keep plants in winter?
Definitely would protect them - it would be interesting to measure the temp difference and see.
Very interesting. But a little to much for me.
Great job.appreciated🤔
I think I might close it down during summer. It seems like too much trouble and too expensive to cool down in our heat.
I'm with you.

Good to know, thanks.
Thanks🎉
Do you have to heat this at all in winter?Temperatures here can get occasional frost…
He doesn't heat it in the winter - Fresno gets colder than we do here in Mesa however.
How do you keep it warm in the winter?
I asked Larry - this was his response “If I open up the shades and let the sun in, it never goes below 60, so I have never had to heat it. I can reverse the ceiling fan and blow the warm air through also if needed.”
Can we get more videos like this?
What did you like about it? Which type would you like more of?
This looks very expensive
It was. He spent over 35 grand on the full treatment. .my guess.
WHICH PART? IT MIGHT snow soo. Sooo..! Also The biosphere Is over at the university soo

I think you're right.
My house is smaller and less luxurious from this greenhouse...
az is too hot for regular houses 🔥👹🔥
Amen!
This video is 5 months late ☹️
We are heading into greenhouse season if you want to protect your warm season crops.
Hell yeah it's too hot. I guess if you have enough money you can do anything. I got one for November through March. That's it.
I can only dream🫨🫨🫨😊🫠🥰
Same!
