The Irish only have a few actual tracks so most of the bigger races are on the roads. So the most dangerous part of the race is the first lap. Riders all close together and the risk of crashing on cold tyres is higher too. So the races have a travelling doctor on a high powered motorcycle following the riders on the first lap to be on the scene almost as soon as the accident happens. (Look up Doc John, Dr John Hines, who was a good friend of mine and his lectures, those lectures are very interesting and gives you an insight into the risks). Once the race is underway the risk of being hit by a bike close to you is much less. You can hear the other bike and usually the rider behind will back off if the rider in front cannot see him and is moving over. Hence the term "showing a wheel" when they get close but both riders know they are close and the leading rider of the two or group will be aware and make allowances for them. Riders will always have respect for the other rider no matter how competitive they are. Irish road racers and TT riders do have some fatalistic outlook on life and as good as they are on the roads the riding skills don't always transfer to the short circuits (regular tracks you would be used to seeing) and may not even get into the top 5 or 10 at those tracks. A few can do both but the most successful road riders specialise and as fast as they are do have something in reserve and to win its about being fast but also being very accurate and know that track better than they know the way to the shops in normal life.

I know this is the Ulster Grand Prix, but I've been to the Isle of Man twice as part of a race team (not a racer myself), and it's consentrated madness in its purest form. At the 2019 Isle of Man TT we lost a good friend of the team I am with, and it hit us hard. I didn't know the other rider as I joined the team earlier that year, but apparently he was a good friend of the team for many years. We all know the danger but no one is making us do it.

Hey Conner, the guy who won that last race, Ian Hutchinson, is the only man to have won all 5 solo TT,s in the same year. Also check out your namesake, Conner Cummins he is from the Isle of Man, and competes in all these races. At the end of the road racing season a lot of these riders pack their bags and head to China, to take part in the Macau Grand Prix. This is a street race around the city of Macau, most of the circuit is lined with steel Armco barriers, and since the 1970s has been dominated by TT riders.

Most of the riders are the same at the IoM and Irish road racing. main difference being. the length of the IoM race. (37 mile lap, over 200 miles race.) and that the riders set off individually at 10 second intervals. whereas in Ireland the laps are much shorter. and the riders set off in one pack. it's often chaotic.
A lot of these races take place near me and it's great entertainment for the weekend. 'The craic is mighty'. as is said here in Ireland.

You can see the big difference between this and the TT is that these guys are racing side by side, the TT is a time trial so you aren't passing anyone. The NW200 in N.Ireland is also the fastest motorcycle race in the world, with the highest average speed of nearly 130mph and top speed of over 205mph.
