JB Plastic Weld trying to mend the impossible! Today i am trying to fix my broken plastic mic stand. In theory it should be able to be fixed, so lets give JB weld Plastic weld a shot and see if it can save me having to buy a new mic stand!

I have already tried this with superglue and it lasted a few seconds before the bond gave out.

The JB weld plastic weld actually did a great job and held it even when being overly rough with the delicate plastic and i am honestly quite shocked how well it did.
I am although tempted to try it again with the regular JB weld to see if that is any stronger and if it harms the plastic like superglues do.

Aircraft in World War I often used Twisted-Wire Fasteners. With the kind of difficult repair you're doing here, I'd recommend drilling holes through both pieces, before inserting single strand soft iron wire (e.g. gardening wire) through, then twisting the wire to tighten-up the joint. This kind or repair provides that all-important degree of 'flexibility' as well as strength. Finally, I'd tidy up the wire - trimming and bending over - before covering the whole with a flexible epoxy adhesive, such as the JB WELD that you just used.
Incidentally, I developed this repair technique when my job was to deliberately crash radio-controlled model aircraft to establish what spare parts the manufacturer needed to make available as well as writing up repair instructions. We found that certain plastic parts (particularly on the landing gear, which is subject to heavy shocks) was better attached with twisted-wire fasteners, rather than screws, as unlike the screws the twisted-wire didn't stress the plastic of the fixing point as well as providing that all-important flexibility.
Hopefully this is useful information for your repairs armoury. I've often found that applying our forefathers' techniques can improve upon the effectiveness of modern materials.

This tells me all I needed! I've got a flat plastic piece (a vintage guitar pickguard) with a small corner broken off. I'm going to use a scrap sheet of plastic to bind the two pieces together from the back side and hopefully you won't see the break from the front. I was debating on whether to use 2 part epoxy vs. some type of soldering kit. I think this will hold strong enough and have less chance of damaging my piece in the process. I usually super glue first to hold as it cures fast, then follow up with epoxy all around the break.
I have also tried Q-Bond which seems to work great on plastics too.

This stuff just works...it's weird how what I welded (headphones crack..which is typical) is still flexible but definitely welded together and not going to come apart. I may return to it soon and possibly get a flat price of plastic to assist and weld that there too

I left comments some time ago about a plastic repair product id used but couldnt remember the name. Its Q Bond. You should be able to get it from JB Tools. It can be used to glue rubber plastic metal it doesnt matter. If its got chunks missing and is metal sprinkle the grey powder in the damage then drip the adhesive and in seconds its cured and you can drill file sand whatever if its plastic sprinkle the black powder. Its graphite and composite material same as mixing the metal. No stirring no measuring. In one vid they take a rubberized semi round belt that looks like one from exercise equipment. Its cut in two. He dobs some adhesive on one end and sticks the two ends together waits 15 seconds and cant pull the belt apart to save his life. Then steps throught the belt and holds it to the floor then pulls up and it wont break. You sould check it out. You can even cast things if you have a mold for it .

That type of cap is best marked before use so it doesn't go back the wrong way and accidentaly mix components, gluing the cap on. A heated staple made from a paperclip then sculpted into the item with a soldering iron is a better plastic fix I find. Or adding one into the faces being glued by drilling or melting holes for it. UV glue that hardens with light in seconds is great to hold epoxy in place to set. Like a tack weld.
good point, the cap on some of the newer versions of this is keyed so it will only fit one way, so your thoughts are totally correct

JB Weld is good shit. I've sealed holes in car radiators with it before.

I used the metal weld on a car a/c radiator coil rock hole and it never failed under super high pressure. I did pull a slight vacuum until a tiny bit of the goo sucked into the hole in the coil so it would act like an anchor from the inside since pressure so high..
Interesting. My job is broken plastic around some screwholes. I'd need to build up the are area and put the screw back through it but this stuff might work. My main fear is that it doesn't stick to the existing plastic very well.

You might consider using Chemical Metal, as you could fill the holes (even enlarging them to give a better bonding surface) then drilling and tapping a new thread for your screws. It's a technique that I've often used.
This is great for general use. However I have tried quite a few times on a plastic tank on my radiator and has failed. I had a crack on the plastic top, and ended up using a plastic welder to fill in the crack and seal it. My radiator is 249 for a new one so before having to buy one I wanted to see if repairing it would be possible.

I just welded my plastic radiator on my Mercedes last month.
I used the original JB weld the one that has 2 tubes the black one and red one and it sealed the leak its still holding.
My idea is drilling 1mm holes, 1-2 holes on each bonding surface should be enough. then cut needles into short pieces. Insert into these holes, then bend and/or cut them to match the angle/depth of each hole. Then apply strong glue on needle pieces and also bonding surfaces, not necessary to leave excessive beads on both sides.

Yes, this is a variation of the Twisted-Wire Fasteners used on wooden WWI aircraft (as I've just described in more detail, above). As you know, these techniques were developed by our forefathers in the days before modern high-performance adhesives, and they utilise other aspects of engineering that can still prove useful in today's environment. 👏
I have some of the JB Weld for about 6 month and found it will indeed fix anything if you follow the instructions even metal. Best price I found was Amazon (use Mike's link)

Right idea, possibly the wrong product. I use, (In America) JB Weld "Plastic Bonder Structural Adhesive" with a high PSI rating. Part number 50113 (tan, but also have black and clear 50112).
personally I would have just got a better stand but nice quick fix and at least you got the plastic weld there if you should need it for other jobs.

Good review, good product. JBWeld has been an awesome product since the 60s when I was a kid and my father used it for industrial uses and later in projects sent to outer space. The original formula focused on longevity, durability and consistency, something the other competing products are rather careless about. In essence, JBWeld magic comes from high quality two part epoxy that has some type of filler material inside that helps reinforce the epoxy making the bond stronger than the original material. Keys to success are to thoroughly clean the surfaces of all loose material, grease, oil or other contaminants. Secondly you need to abrade all smooth surfaces using a file, knife or other tool. This allows the epoxy to grip far better than it will do with a slick smooth surface. **Finally you need to use MORE product to build a "weld" that is significantly larger than the broken area, NOT LESS as you recommended**. Epoxy by nature is very hard once fully cured, even stronger with the added filler including metal, sawdust, plastic powder, etc depending on the specific JBWeld formula. But you will always benefit by increasing the thickness and size of the area that broke in the first place. As you pointed out, JBWeld can always be trimmed, filed, and sanded to smooth and shape it as needed once it is fully cured. Many people have never used common grade epoxy or had bad experiences with it after realizing that Krazy Glue is very limited in effectiveness. For these kind of plastic repairs I am using superglue in combination with graphite or baking soda.

Hey. Want the truly impossible? Try gluing broken fan blade made out of polyethylene with JB weld epoxy. I did it 2 days ago knowing it would be impossible. Glues just don't bond chemically to polyethylene. The window fan has been spinning now for 24 hours. I can't believe this. I'm pretty sure it will eventually fail, the difference in weight distribution and vibration it causes will probably pull it apart eventually. But I really wonder just how long it will last... If it lasts even a couple of months I will be JB Weld's free spokesman 😂

If you read the fine print on nearly all cyanoacrylate glues even the ones that say works on most plastics you see that they dont recomend for repairing polypropylene or polyethylene plastics. Most house hold plastics are either PP or PE. There are some with a bonder or primer that work better than others. If you can find a plastic bonding agent plastiweld is one they chemically fuse the plastic together. Now on this fix here. If this doesnt hold weld it. Determine the typ plastic it is. Find the propper welding rod for that plastic and use a plastic welder or soldering iron. Just a suggestion. Ive been welding plastics for several decades. Its like anything else. Takes practice.

@@mikesunboxing yessir. We do have the jb weld and bonder here in the us. The difference is the thermogenic reaction time. The weld is much quicker in its curing and setting time. And the strength is around 500 psi if i remember correctly. Whereas the jb plastic bonder has a strength of 3770psi sets in 15 mins sandable in 30 mins dries tan. Great for plastic to metal plastic to plastic and carbon fiber composites coated metals thermoset and concrete. Also good for filling gaps oem auto and HD truck approved. Its a urethane adhesive system. If you get the urge to do another video regarding plastic repairs i suggest you check out plastex. And plastex 3000. Its really cool stuff. You can have half a little statue or figurine. Providing you had the two pieces you could make a mold keep half and cast the other half with plastex. Repair dashboard cracks in place. Sprikle the powder drip the catalyst in and watch it tunr to a solid in no time. Its around 16.00 us for a tiny kit 40 to 70 for a 50 gram bottle of powder w 30 ml of catalyst. Can get it in different colors. Its good stuff

@@mikesunboxing there is another product i found several years back that far exceedes any plastic repair products ive ever seen. Unfortunately i cant remember what its called. Due to health issues my memory is hit and miss. Im hoping it will pop up soon. Very frustrating when i cant think of something that can make peoples lives a little better or easier but i can recite The Girl From Ipanema word for word. Whos that going to help? Maybe piss off a group of people trapped in an elevator. Which in case youre wondering why anyone would intentionally learn that song is why i learned that song. You really should do it. Fn hilarious especially if you can have a friend do the music da da da. I can tell you the repair im wanting to locate is a powder resin and activator or catalyst like plastex. Around 70.00 a kit and is made in northern US. They had no distribution below colorado so it was mail order or email order only. In case you get bored and feel like searching. Thanks for the videos. after this i dropped it again a few times and then used abro steel which held up really well until a day or so ago when i dropped in from about 5 foot and it shattered and now have almost given up. The jb quik weld was the next one to try as that seems a little bit stronger for smaller applications

The only way this product will work if you were to put two pieces together you can't leave it alone and especially around too much heat I try using it on my radiator elbow and would never stick it's still leaked but I used it on a inner console because there's two pieces to stick it worked better and applying some kind of pressure to it for 24 hours

How long did it stink in your workplace after using the plasticweld? That stuff is amazing but it's so toxic my garage smelled for days after using a small amount even my pets fur stunk for a few days

Bit of a warning. This stuff is incredibly smelly and I mean unbelievably smelly. I glued some plastic parts in the garage and you could smell it down the street. Scrubbing the hands and your hands still smell. I put the canister in a sealed bag and the smell even got through that. I washed, showered, out fresh clothes on and went out and still could smell it on my person. My neighbour thought we had been letting the dogs wee in the house. I am not making this up! Today I am taking the canister to the council tip and getting rid of it.
wow, that is pretty extreme, is does have an odor normally, but it usually fades after a short while, it must have been a bad unit or reacted with something? But thanks for the heads up. Wonder if anyone else has experienced this?
@@mikesunboxing yep I'm not exaggerating. I used it about a year ago and it didn't smell too bad. Then I used it this week and the stench is extreme. I think as it's a two part adhesive if one of the components isn't reacted it keeps gassing off. If the canister has been unused for a while one component doesn't come out properly as its partially blocked. It was smelling really bad on the outside of the canister, on the workbench and part of the workpiece I was adhering. As I say my guess is that if the two components aren't fully mixed and reacted to harden off, one of the components keeps smelling as it hasn't been reacted. I've put the canister that was in a sealed bag into a gas tight box as well and that has stopped the smell from the canister. The workbench still stinks and the workpiece as well.

@@mikesunboxing Thanks Mike, Well that's put me on the spot I've got a break similar to what you had with the mic and I was going to use the Plastic Weld, haha, now I'm not sure what to do, but looking at the bigger picture I think I'll try drilling two small holes in the plastic and using some stainless to make the join stronger and see how it goes, I'm a bit disappointed that the Plastic Weld didn't do the job by itself though. probably but maybe not a good idea depending why the battery cracked? if it cracked due to cell expansion you should dispose of it

It really depends on the type of plastic as to what type of bonding agent you use.
Very true, there isn’t really a universal solution but this one seems to work well for a pretty wide range of plastics
It says causes cancer? Isn’t it unsafe to touch? Or does that warning just have to be there?
the warning is there because of a chemical used has been banned or whatever in california so almost everything with plastics or computing stuff has the same message

Not enough tensile strength
Doesn't work if I can't bond to broken composite plastic pieces together. I just used this stuff on my rc car broken shock tower. Used a clamp broke soon as i touched it. Epoxy has to get hard kinda melt the pieces together for effectiveness, not flexible bonding hard rubber lol👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾
try the other stuff i used in a later video it is like chemical metal and a lot stronger than the plastic weld

It didn't stick to the plastic lid! Ha, ha, case closed, it's no better than any other glue on plastics that are problematic. Keep your hopes down, get ready to melt some plastic.

JB Weld for plastics is garbage.
i found it to be pretty good, not as good as abrosteel or the OG jbweld
