    29:04 thanks for covering this. Seems like every 1200 player out there just focuses on killing knights no matter what the material cost is. Much harder to defend bishop to b5 when not using the Sicilian defense, so I'm probably going to adopt it now.

    Should I ignore the Sicilian Defence until I'm much higher rated? I've heard advice that it's too theoretical for 1000 ELO players (low I know), and that I should play French defence instead?

    • @unh0lys0da16
      @unh0lys0da16 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Rating isn't a lineair measure, so you might be 1000 because your tactics are lacking, or because you blunder a lot, or because you play terrible openings etc. As long as you understand the idea behind the Sicilian Defence I'd say go for it, but that also means that you can improvise if your opponent plays a move that's not theory like was discussed in this video. And this improvising part is why it's a bad idea for 1000 elo players, because your knowledge and tactical skill is often suboptimal. The sicilian is a very sharp position that needs to played accurately, so at a lower rating it's a bit of a double edges sword, either you blunder a lot in a sharp line or you opponent does (or both). What it ultimately comes down to is what kind of player you are, GM Eric Hansen for example was in his earlier days a very aggresive very tactical player that sacs everything and plays for quick checkmates, but he only got to GM level after he learned how to play very strategical and slow. So my advice for you is, if you are a slow strategic player, don't learn the Sicilian, but play something boring and safe where you slowly choke your opponents and then after you've reached like 1500 learn the Sicilian and move to a more aggresive style to learn to be a more tactical tricky aggresive player. If you're already an aggresive player then learn the sicilian and continue to play aggresively until you're around 1500 and then learn to play more positional strategic and boring.

    • @yarielrobles9003
      @yarielrobles9003 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You should play the opening that suits your playstyle, if there was such a thing as too theoretical, no beginner would play e4 as it is packed with enormous amounts of theory. The amount of theory that has been developed for an opening only affects you when you're strong enough to actually learn that theory, but even then, if you understand the opening you should reach a playable middlegame regardless as players around your level will be incapable of punishing it and when you finally get to a level where they can actually punish your inaccuracies, you will have already learned how to play accurately

    • @ym276
      @ym276 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Low-rated players should always start with 1.e5. This is the main theoretical move and by understanding this well, you can move to other openings. I am 2200 and I play e5, sicilian and french and I can assure you that it will be beneficial to begin with learning e5 properly.

    • @deadvirgin428
      @deadvirgin428 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true, the Sicilian is just as straightforward as e5, it simply has a different plan. You can play it if you like it. It's not like you have to play super sharp lines like the Najdorf either, the classical Sicilian is pretty solid.
