    Great job Jacob. As an Iraq combat vet I appreciate your honesty in talking about the ugliness (though important) of fighting for one's life. I own many knives, many Spydercos, including the Civilian and Matriarch models, and agree that they are the sharpest/scariest one's I own and the most demanding of care and respect in handling. They trully are 100 percent purpose built, probably more than any other knives I can think of. I would also say they are not for everyone. Anyway, looking forward to your future videos!

      Thank you sir that means a lot. I was never involved in a war, thank the lord but I've seen enough violence to know its not something to take lightly. Yeah they are definitely a knife you need to handle with care lol. Thanks again for the comments and thank you for your service. Have a great day

      Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 In self defense, even if you are a normally peaceful person you are forced to inflict violence to stop the threat. I rely on my conceal carry pistol but if a bad guy tries to go for my pistol will deploy a knife with my off hand to stick, slice the bad guy just enough to draw my weapon, unless I got his femoral artery.🩸But then I may apply a tourniquet after disarming him.

    Spyderco website - this knife was developed as a request from South Africa, used by civilians to protect their lives, houses and homes from the ANC and EFF criminals.....website states.... Due to the high crime rate in South Africa, he felt it would be an ideal personal-defense tool. Spyderco responded by mating a Civilian-style blade to the fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) handle of the popular Endura model. The result was the first Matriarch and yet another "instant classic.......kinda suprised this wasnt mentioned as it was easy to google

    • @ericsierra-franco7802
      @ericsierra-franco7802 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's incorrect...and that's not from Spyderco's website.
      These were developed from a request from a law enforcement agency that needed an effective self defense tool for undercover narcotics investigators who could not carry a gun in their role as an undercover. It also had to be user friendly and require little to no training with it.

      @ericsierra-franco7802 No you are wrong.....go and research the difference between the Matriach and the Civilian before you make another ignorant comment like this again.

    You have a good speaking voice, calm demeanor, articulate, and pretty knowledgeable of the features and benefits. Keep at it I think your channel will grow. One thing about the Matriarch you didn’t mention is the carry ability. How slim and light the knife is closed and the Emerson wave that deploys wicked fast out of your pocket for self defense, a big feature for anyone wanting to carry this for self defense. It deploys faster than an auto knife!

    There is an earlier version of this knife made for the US Government for defense.of agents who might not be able to.carry or have access to hamdguns.It did not have the pocket opening feature,as on the example that you demonstrated. The first.ones are a bit longer. The tip was prone to breaking.These weapons are karambit blades intended to be used by people with minimal training. They create fearsome wounds. A very.few were sold as contract over runs. These are excellent. for their intended purpose.

    I had this one for a while and ultimately sold it and bought a Wharncliffe serrated Endura that I carry with a zip tie mod. The Matriarch will definitely do more damage just by waving it around because of the hook shape that will catch into things, but the Endura with the more traditional profile can also stab if need be. Most important of all, I can get away with using the Endura for EDC purposes. It's surprisingly good, it can even cut through thick pvc pipe and it's overall great for rough use. Serrations enable sawing action and prevent slippage of the material your're cutting. Realistically I wouldn't carry more than 2 knives (one of which must be plain edge) and having a more versatile serrated edge to go with my plain one makes more sense to me. Anyways, if you carry a SE for the sole purpose of self defence the Matriarch is definitely your best bet. I actually still miss mine, maybe that's why I'm still here watching even after I got rid of it hah...

    • @jacobreviewsthings
      @jacobreviewsthings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I feel you man, I got a tasman salt because I wanted something more useful to use. I still kept the matriarch because it's just too cool. Thanks for letting me know about the Spyderco Wharncliffe. I was planning on getting a salt witha wharncliffe blade

    • @umbertomasoero367
      @umbertomasoero367 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jacobreviewsthings You're welcome man. Btw if you pick up the wharnie Salt (which you probably should) just skip the plain edge, LC200N is too soft for a PE, especially Wharncliffe IMHO. It tends to roll easily, especially with a blade this thin and a pointy tip, and ofc you can strop it back to razor sharp in seconds but...SE version on the other hand is IMHO one of the best most functional small knives you can get right now. It has a very thin stock (for some reason even slightly thinner than both the regular and wharnie Delica) and the serrations are shallower than average (possibly the shallowest on a Spyderco). Because of this pretty unique combo (thin+SE) it's a fenomenal slicer, and you can work it through even e.g. soft food with precision and ease without ruining it, almost like a PE: you can even peel stuff like a soft Kiwi in a very efficient manner, just adjust your grip and remember not to hit your thumb with the pointy bits of the serrations: it cuts on mere contact, especially when all new and pointy. The steel is soft as I said but because of the SE you don't apply equal force on the whole edge all the time when cutting, and if you get some some minor rolls and dings here and there you still have a very effective blade all around with very sharp sections here and there that come into play in a slight sawing motion, and it's
      easy to strop to mint condition anyways. The combination of serrations and thin stock also allows the knife to punch way above its weight even in more demanding tasks. For example, when processing thick multiply cardboard you really feel the blade acing through the material in a scary way such that I'm unable to reproduce even with my Cruwear PM2 on a freshly sharpened coarse edge. You'd also think the wharnie SE Endura would perform better on this kind of task but apparently the much thinner geometry of the Salt makes all the difference making it leap ahead anyways (even tho it's considerably more flexy). It's also a basically maintenance free blade due to the nitrogen steel, and it's so light it's exhilarating, just a hair above 50 grams. It really is incredible to have such a huge cutting power and versatility in such a small and light package. The only negative is the relatively soft steel and the flexy build since it's all plastic, but just don't pry open manholes and baton with it and you'll probably be fine with normal EDC use. I highly recommend this knife, I'm sure you're gonna love it. Sorry for the long comment but this little bugger really deserves it.

      I cant think of any small folders that would be as good for self defense specifically but i definitely wouldnt want to be stabbed with a para 3 lol. They make those things sharp. The native 5 is another good small Spyderco. The spyderco persistence is great too especially if you dont want to drop over $100. If you like the spyderco hawkbills the dragonfly 2 salt is awesome. It's like the tasman salt but smaller. My coworker is 5'2 and doesn't have huge hands and that's her favorite knife that we sell. It fits my hands well even though for me it's a little to small to own. The We Banter and Sog Terminus are some of my personal favorite knives and they're both have 2.9 or 3 inch blades.
      Another cool looking small knife that might be worth looking into is the MKM Voxnaes Isonzo. I haven't handled one myself but it looks pretty cool.

Just ordered the Matriarch 3 with the Emerson wave. It’s my last ditch self defense knife setup to deploy from my off hand pocket if a bad guy tries to go for my pistol I can distract him just enough to draw my pistol with my strong hand. You feel cringy talking about self defense because you have empathy about hurting another human being. But in a real sd situation you will do everything in your power to survive and even if it means hurting them. Believe me they want to hurt or kill you. Gotta say, I don’t love this design. To me, Spyderco tried to reinvent the wheel and it didn’t quite pan out. That is to say: more traditional edge geometries are probably going to work better in most cases. The caveat, of course, is that any sharp piece of metal can be deadly. But if we’re talking about ease of use and the maximum angles of attack, you’re better off with a conventional knife. The wave feature is nice, but that’s about the only thing I like, personally. Overall, though, I agree with you that knives generally aren’t the best self-defense options unless you have years of reality-based training under your belt. If you don’t, they can be as much of a liability as they are an advantage.

The Civilian is the one for under cover agents, the Matriarch was made for women in south africa to fend off "unwanted attention". I think both the blades are great but I really prefer the Civilian.

      You're right it's not a fighting knife, it's a knife for self defense. This knife can stab if you know how to angle the tip properly but mainly what you're going to hook that knife into things and then shred whatever that thing is as you pull out. Definitely handle one if you get the chance, there aren't any other knives like it besides the cold steel black talon

      After the initial civilian rollout for covert US drug agents it was then commissioned by African public servants for womens groups as an anti rape weapon. It's designed to tear flesh in whatever form it presents itself in front of the victim. Its like a finger nail from hell, an extension of the hand in defensive actions.. eg. Rake across the face, across the fingers and hands and arms., the ears, nose and eyes. It's not a fighting knife for killing you're correct, though you're wrong calling it a joke.

    Big problem is serrated blades get caught up in the opponents clothing when you slash them - real life experience - buy a plain curved blade..

      Fair enough. I remember reading about soldiers in ww1 learning very quickly that Serrated knives and bayonets were a death trap in the trenches for that reason. I've personally cut through several old coats and jeans with this thing and never had issues. Then ill do the same tests with my tasman salt and those serrations will get caught in the clothing sometimes. Maybe the serrations are slightly different than the normal spyderco serrations or the shape helps it not get tangled up.

      @@jacobreviewsthings Thanks for replying, I was in a self defense situation getting hit by another biker with a bat, so reluctantly had to use my serrated folder, older style similar to a Salt. The tip got through his outer sweater maybe a centimeter into his abdomen on a left to right horizontal slash, but got tied up in the serrations after about 4 inches of sweep, so I cut his exposed wrist instead. Try it out on a mock up wearing clothes. Not good to discover when a scumbag is batting you!, lol

      @IgnorantNortherntwat dang man that's shitty, I'm sorry you had to go through that. Glad your ok now.
      Good to know, ill definitely do that if I get the chance. I usually don't have anything in the jeans to firm them up when I do my tests. Ill try cardboard or something since youre probably right about that making a difference.
