  • First flying session with my newly-built "Utility Special", a Frank Zaic design originally published in the May 1937 Popular Science magazine. The plan and article is available on Outerzone at: outerzone.co.u.... There's a build thread for this model on RCGroups at: www.rcgroups.c.... It flew beautifully - I didn't make any adjustments (cg, incidence, thrustline) of any sort during the flights today. Knocked off at 500 turns as the boundaries of the field are very unforgiving (buildings, busy roads, freeways) and I didn't want to lose it the first time out.

    Beautiful model. You can't go too wrong with a Zaic.

      Thanks TK! This was a really fun build and a super flyer. I still miss it...may have to build another one someday (with a DT this time). There's a build thread for it on RC Groups (see link in video description).

    And the TWA Red and Pearl white really sets her off.
    She flies very well 🙂😂😉

    Outstanding Mike. One of the prettiest endurance ships I've seen. Just keep your distance from the TWA lawyers!

    It's a mix between a Super Connie and a Stuka, definitely an import.
    Well done ✅
    Very sleek.

      These flights were all on low winds. The model was quite happy on two loops of 1/8" wound to 85-90%. It eventually flew away.

  • @Glicksman1

    Doesn't it seem that these FF wonders always want to fly towards the worst possible place for them to go, in this instance the highway with all those trucks and cars? They love to fly into tall trees as well. Very stubborn and willful machines they are.
    That is a beautiful airplane, beautifully built, and it flies so well.
    I'd add R/C rudder to keep it close. Screw purity.

      Thanks - take a look at the build thread linked in the video description above - there's some pictures and text about the propeller starting on post #17.

    Were you inspired by TWA connies when doing her decoration?

  • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
    @CliffHarveyRCPlanes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bet you're pleased with that. Very nice, are you going to stick with the rubber for now?

    • @michaelkelly7338
      @michaelkelly7338  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - having too much fun with free flight. Been thinking about building a larger rubber endurance ship with RC rudder so I can fly it fully-wound on our smaller local field - similar to what Larry is doing here: th-cam.com/users/domoremath.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelkelly7338 Yes, I'm subbed to Larry as well, inspirational videos 👍 I meant are you going to stick with the rubber motor you have on this model?

    • @michaelkelly7338
      @michaelkelly7338  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CliffHarveyRCPlanes I'll likely go with a longer motor to get more turns (up to 36" loops) as I get more trimming done and where I have room to fly with it. Cross-section (2 loops 1/8") looks about right so far.

    Newbie question, still learning what is that you put between the winder and the rubber, is that a torque measuring device?
    Such a classic shape, streamline moderne beauty!

    I'll tell you what it can do newyork to Japan and back on 2 loops of rubber

  • @johnmajane3731
    @johnmajane3731 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What propeller did you use? What is the black ring connecting the rubber to the shaft?

    • @michaelkelly7338
      @michaelkelly7338  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The propeller is carved using an approach described in Don Deloach's Sept 2008 Flying Models magazine prop-carving article. The rubber motor has an o-ring at the front end to make it easier to slip it on and off the prop hook. More details available in the build thread for the model here: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3679113-Zaic-Utility-Special-Build

      @@michaelkelly7338 thanks, I went through the link. That you can carve the propeller and spinner as one is amazing.
