Almost Famous is a very good movie. "Untitled" - the director's cut - is a GREAT movie. There are so many great moments that were cut (for time?) from the theatrical release. Like the whole scene between Russell & Penny in the Hyatt House Ice Machine room. Or the fact that when William tells Penny that she was bartered for $50 and a case of beer, it was just AFTER the band and crew threw her a surprise birthday party. SO much great material excised from the "Untitled" version! If THAT had been the version released, Kate Hudson wouldn't have just been nominated for an Oscar - she would have WON. If you love this movie and haven't seen the longer director's cut - seek it out. It will be a revelation. (And as a bonus - the BluRay edition I have has a commentary track by Cameron Crowe and HIS MOM! 😁)
The lead singer is played by Jason Lee. He’s a former professional skateboarder. He also was the lead on a television series named “My name is Earl”. Oh, and he often has a role in Kevin Smith movies.
I love this movie so much, it's definitely in my top 10. It captures the music scene of that time period so perfectly. And the fact that so much of it is based on Cameron Crowe's real life makes it even more special
This is a very special movie for me. I grew up as a kid at about the same time as William. I loved everything Rock & Roll and mad it a point to see every concert I could. Back then you could often get autographs or talk to a member of your favorite band. Most of the arenas didn't have underground parking for the tour buses like they do now. You could catch the band leaving their bus or after the show just hanging out in a hotel lobby. If you wanted to smoke some pot at the concert there was always someone to pass you a joint. If you wanted a beer but weren't old enough there was a guy that would buy one for you if you paid for his. Ticket prices for even the biggest bands were $5 - $10. It was a great time to be young, I still have almost every ticket stub for all the concerts I've seen, hundreds of them.
I wish the suggestion for this movie was the directors cut because it made the movie even better. The directors cut has scenes that fill in some of the gaps in the story. Best scene added was a radio station scene with the guitarist from the duo/group Tenacious D (Jack Black is the other member). This is my favorite movie of all time. I have literally watched this movie once a month every month since 2001.
Wow, I've seen this but never had a memory flash like I just did. I have two sisters and a brother, 8,9, and 10 years older than me. Sisters were hippies and brother was a punch card computer geek. In 1976 all my siblings had left home and gave (10 year old me) all their albums. The stash of records looked the same as this kid. Or course I did nothing cool like he did, but I do win a lot of 70s music trivia questions.
Another great Cameron Crowe flic was Singles (‘92). Fab grunge soundtrack & epic cameos. CC does a poetic job directing in concert w/his soundtracks. And I think he’s one of the best at encapsulating a vivid snapshot of life steeped in the setting he’s filming in: 70’s Tourbus teens; 90’s Seattle twentysomethings; 00’s SportsAgent finding himself… Thought you’d dig AF, your laughter is simply wonderful & my healing hopes/prayers are with you, your Mom & fam at this time. If you get a chance to read up on this movie and watch it again, you'll really enjoy it. For the most part, this is a collection of true stories that really happened in the life of Cameron Crowe. Lester Bangs (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) was a real person who was just as fascinating as he is in the movie. Jann Wenner really was the founder of Rolling Stone and the real Wenner has a cameo in the back of a taxi when William is looking for Penny. Legendary guitarist Peter Frampton is at the card game where Penny gets sold for "$50 and a case of beer", as is comedian Mitch Hedburg. The DVD includes commentary by Cameron Crowe and his mom (played by the amazing Francis McDormand) and is worth a listen. The deleted "radio interview" scene is worth finding and watching. Best lines and best moments in the movie are both from Penny Lane: "You ARE home" and "What kind of beer?" This is a great movie that stands up to as many watches as you're willing to give it.

I recommend your Patreon's pick between these Goldie Hawn movies: Foul Play, Private Benjamin, Death Becomes Her, and Overboard. One of Kate Hudson's most recent films was "Glass Onion," which you should totally watch, but before you do you should watch the movie "Knives Out" (since GO is a sequel to it) and I think you should also watch a Goldie Hawn comedy first, as Hudson's performance in GO is her only performance that really reminds me of her mother.
Growing up, my best friend’s mom was an English teacher at Clairmont High, the school where Fast Times is based off of. She knew the real life Spicoli and other characters, and said the movie characters were fairly accurate. Mary Catherine Swanson. She started the AVID college prep program.
Weird movie. Nothing really happens. Wanted more, at story or any reason to like any one of the characters or even get some good acting but there isn’t any. Cameron Crowe’s least entertaining flick.
This movie is losly based off of a underage gruopie. There is a very dark underbelly in the movie and music industry. This movie glorifies that dark underbelly. I hate this movie so much.

Growing up, my best friend’s mom was an English teacher at Clairmont High, the school where Fast Times is based off of. She knew the real life Spicoli and other characters, and said the movie characters were fairly accurate. Mary Catherine Swanson. She started the AVID college prep program.

Weird movie. Nothing really happens. Wanted more, at story or any reason to like any one of the characters or even get some good acting but there isn’t any. Cameron Crowe’s least entertaining flick.
This movie is losly based off of a underage gruopie. There is a very dark underbelly in the movie and music industry. This movie glorifies that dark underbelly. I hate this movie so much.

I agree with part of this. But there has also been many studies that suggest if we removed all illigal/immoral tendencies in our world... It wouldn't go well. Free Will is by definition the ability to make unwise decisions.
Penny Lane was loosely based on Pamela Des Barres who claimed she was 19 when she started hooking up with rock stars. Penny was also lying about her age to William in this movie according to Cameron Crowe.
