A really underrated scene in this movie is when Russell Hammond snatches the phone from William's hands, to talk to his mother, and the shift from his "I'm a rockstar" mode to his "Yes, ma'am" mode while she delivers a stern lecture to bring his ego down a few notches

I lived in Ocean Beach when this was filmed. My 1970 VW van was hired for the set of the parking lot for the 1st concert scene. If you watch the movie, you’ll see the van (and me in the passenger seat). We drove right behind the mother’s car when the kid/reporter was getting dropped off. The tour bus driver in the movie drove my VW for the shot. I had a great conversation with him during the filming. He owned the bus company that Hollywood hired for filming scenes. The movie Speed was filmed with his busses. It was a really cool experience. We filmed at the San Diego sports arena for a couple nights. I was in my early twenties at the time. Great memories!

Cameron is a genius at finding the emotional core of a song and using the music as a window into the soul of a character in a scene. From Led Zeppelin in Fast Times, to Free Falling in Jerry McGuire to Tiny Dancer in Almost Famous. The song becomes the through-line and emotional tapestry of the scene the actors paint across. Crowe main lines the emotional power of music in his films, and I am always amazed and enthralled with each melodic moment, from joy to pain. Song and film as one.

I’m Kate Hudson’s age and I remember this movie coming out right around the time I graduated from High School. I always wanted to be a writer. This movie was a huge inspiration for me. I did go on to write and was published in Record Collector News, an international publication anyone can find at pretty much any music shop. That was a big moment for me and I have Cameron Crowe to thank. Almost Famous remains to be in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I remember being 18 and getting to spend time with a legit band. I ended up writing lyrics for them and even sang into a microphone for the first time with them. They’ll always remind me of Still Water from Almost Famous. The movie brings back so many memories for me. It’s hard to believe so much time has passed since it was released back in 1997, if memory serves. Thank you so much for posting this! It’s always great to see the cast and where they all are now. I’ll always love Kate Hudson. She really owned the role of “Penny Lane” and much of my life experiences from that time on working with bands, becoming a band photographer and published writer and really being inside that world, will always remind me of this great film that changed my life!

@thelilacmum, I've always loved and sung "Tiny Dancer" since long before it was in vogue. BTW, I love lilacs too. 30-some years ago, when i bought my 2nd house on a new, almost tree-less dead-end street, I dug up and replanted 3ea, 4'-5' lilacs from an abandoned farm house. They're now 15' tall and wide, even with annual pruning and cut backs. 2 weeks of glory in May and the rest of the year irrepressible shoot-sprouting monsters.

Three more: “Mona Lisas and Madhatters” Elton John in the bar scene where William breaks the RS cover news. The other one is “Tangerine” by Led Zepplin when Penny Lane is on the airplane. The third one is “Misty Mountain Hop” when they're entering NYC in the Limo. Get a flash of these scenes when hearing these songs.

At 61 now, this is the sound-track of my life and no finer portrayal of that emotional musical experience, the experience of a generation, has ever been brought to cinema. My attention span isn't what it used to be, perhaps owing to the 70's, and then some, but I watched every second of this joyous reunion, hanging on every word. I had cramps in my cheeks smiling so hard, laughing and crying with you through your shared moments. Thank you all! To Stillwater, The Band-Aids, The Budding Journalists, The Uncool, and uncredited until recently from another Cameron Crow remembrance, Gregg Allman, for returning your interview tapes giving rise to this cultural icon of a film years later!
Cameron Crowe and cast, you are indelibly imprinted on us, the fans of the greatest music generation. Your love story to music and how it moves us will live forever.

That was fascinating to hear Crowe talk about Philip Seymour Hoffman and how he set those boundaries to say "leave me alone to process this and do it my way". No doubt a talent like that got into a zone that few people probably understood. When he was filming his scenes in Ogunquit Maine for Empire Falls (2001 I think) I had the opportunity to be on set for a day and wanted so badly to meet him. During a break he was eating his lunch under a tent, alone, and it was then that I saw an opportunity. So I started to approach and when he saw he, sent me this subtle but very powerful look which immediately had the intended effect and had me turning around and walking away. I later heard that he often stayed in character and I have no doubt that interacting with a star struck fan would have been disrupting and the last thing he wanted at that moment. RIP to one of the greatest actors of a generation.
