Hi Mike, I’m a 71 Year old Newbie, living in Langport, Somerset. UK. Thank you so much, you take so much care with warnings when needed. Your a real pleasure to ‘Watch & Learn’ Thank you.
This video is fantastic! Long form videos can be tough on TH-cam, but this one is well worth the time spent watching. So many techniques shown and explained through, it feels like having a professional in your shop with you giving pointers as you go. As a very amateur turner, this will give me the confidence to try making these. Love all the how-to videos. Keep up the amazing work!
I’m always looking for fast ideas but I learned why I keep having the skew jump on my projects I’m looking forward to getting in the shop and putting this learned technique thanks well done
Thanks for the tips on the skew and roughing gouge. As you mention, this is a great way to use scrap pieces to make pieces that don't require a lot of precision.
I just made three for first time I used poplar because it was what I had and did most the turning with half inch skew and it turned out very nice without a lot of sanding a joined them them with pva glue and attached the beards with #2 tight bond next ones will be other tighter grained wood , maple , apple wood, walnut or oak noses thank you for clear tool.use enjoyed it
Recently participated in a holiday craft show with 3 other club members, one of which brought several Gnomes was astonished how popular they were and well they sold.
I've really enjoyed watching this video. I'm always looking for new items to run in my Arts & Crafts booth. I've got a lot of ideas similar to your techniques. Great job turning and an even better job explaining what you were doing and why. Thanks much. Woodbees Creations/Randy Jones
An excellent instructional video. A tad long but the instructor is inextant upon viewer learning the how to. It would be great if a materials list would be provided (like recipes do). And it would be very helpful if Craft Supplies made it possible to buy all project needs from them. It would save time. I.E., by eliminating having to hunt for od ball items like the whiskers material. But make no mistake, this is an excellent how-to video, especially for beginner woodturners.
Hi Mike. I just wanted to Say that i réally your vidéo. You' have a very fine wood turning technique. I have been turning for a good few years and have a good few takeaways from your vidéo. I ll bé starting m'y first gnome this morning. Many thanks for thé detail and Care that went into making this vidéo, excellent caméra work and just a very pleasant alround style. Many thanks, Darragh, Irish woodturner from France
Hey Mike, Great video for a Christmas idea. I'm gonna make this three times... once for each of my little Granddaughters BUT it will be a Chrisymas Day craft project where they will each assemble their own. (Papa will do the glue-up.) Thanks for all the detail. You'll get all the credit. Merry Christmas -- "early"!
Thanks for all your educational content, Mike. Wondering if you'll ever do any tutorials with carbide tools, for those of us that don't use traditional bowl gouges and scrapers? Anyway, thanks again, I've come to lean on your videos frequently!
Great video, as always! I really enjoy how you explain and demonstrate how to do these projects. I was wondering what was the brand of the hair? I am having a hard time locating such great colors in my area.
When gluing the beard to the body using ca glue should I sand off the wax finish where the beard will be placed? In other words does ca glue adhere to a wax type finish?
You could lightly scuff the surface where the beard will go with 320 grit paper, however we haven't had an issue with gluing directly on the finished surface.

Why dont u make the hole gnome from one solid piece of wood.
Just to have contrasting wood on the body and hat. You can most certainly do them out of one piece. 😊
What type of sandpaper do you use.
looks like Abranet sanding screens.
@@aventador832 Thank you
“I burned ‘em to make ‘em look cooler.” 🤓
If they are bald...shouldn't they have ears? Why is there a nose on his body?
Eyes & ears are hidden by the hat & beard - that's the nature of gnomes!
Got it.
