The depression I suffered from after taking ozempic was mental. I went from thinking about food, dealing with cravings, worrying about what I can eat or drink but absolutely nothing. My cravings left, which is a good thing, but everything else went too. I could go all day and not think about food, good thing, but the sudden death of my appetite scared me the most. I didn't take it to lose weight but for my uncontrolled diabetes. I've recovered and now I'm working with it instead of against it.
I was on Mounjaro for 8 months. I lost 30 lbs., but I had to stop taking this medication because I developed awful insomnia, anxiety, and depression. It did something to my brain (and my reward center in my brain, in particular). Nothing gave me joy anymore. I was afraid to eat (because of the diarrhea and vomiting). I couldn’t sleep at night. I’m happy to report that I’ve kept the weight off since stopping this medication.
Have you noticed diabetics haven’t expressed these concerns,i think a LOT of people forgot these injections are for diabetics and we have gotten off insulin and multiple pills lessen side effects shortly after start up on them our weight loss slowly starts months later…😊
@@lynncrf I honestly don't know how I've kept the weight off. I am just NOT as hungry as I was before I started taking Mounjaro. I stopped taking MJ in October 2023 because my depression and anxiety had become life-threatening. I wonder if the depression and anxiety just kept me feeling full. Or I wonder if MJ changed the way my brain works. But I still can't eat as much as I did before I started MJ. It's a miracle, really. Oh, and by the way, I'm finally back on antidepressants and I see a therapist once a week, so my mood has returned to normal levels.
How long after stopping did your depression get better? Did you try to reduce the dose first to see if that would help? I am suffering terribly with depression, anxiety but my glucose is perfect, I have lost weight, and my atypical GERD is cured. I don't know what to do.
It’s an adjustment not eating our emotions. We turn to food for comfort and even though losing weight is awesome the emotional comfort needs to be replaced with something. I’ve been there… on mounjaro down 65lbs down.
Losing weight made me happy! I couldn't wait to get on the scale every morning. I lost 90 in in 15 months counting calories. I think the first 5 days was a downer due to less sugar. I actually enjoyed food as much dieting I appreciated it. Sometimes the less you have the more you appreciate.
No its not I took it and after 2 weeks I had extreme intrusive depressive thoughts couldn't stop crying and felt the pit of despair..my brain didn't feel normal
This was wonderful, Dr. Dan. I have a long history of Bipolar Disorder 1 with regular bouts of depression more than mania. I had a serious downturn while I was taking Fen-Phen and also after I had the RNY Gastric Bypass. I've been on GLP-1s (Trulicity x1 year, Mounjaro x6 months so far) and this stretch is the longest I have gone withOUT any downturn since 1995. I feel alive! Yes, people treat me totally different now that I am 190 pounds lighter, but I worked through that in therapy after the RNY, so not surprising this time. With the people I know in the psych community, they feel _better_ on GLP-1s than off. Whether it is the lack of the food cacophony in the brain or the ability to choose when and what to eat, they/we are doing really well. I am reading every study I can find looking for possible connections between GLP-1s and have found nothing yet. Thank you for talking about this today. It's so important and yes, if anyone has any emotions that are different than usual, they need to report it to their provider immediately and know there is help. You are not alone! Even Dr. Dan is on your side.
Hi, im taking antidepresssnt and antipsychotic, my dietitian prescribed me Saxenda to control the appetite at night, i saw a lot of videos about the possible side effects like depressive and suicidal thoughts. Is what you and the person in the video saying, Saxenda would rather help me instead of cause depression and suicidal thoughts?
I’ve tried on 2 separate occasions- one with semaglutide and the other with tirzepatide and I had the same reaction. Horribly depressed. A depression I’ve never experienced before in my 53 years- severe. Thank goodness i realized it was the medication and rode it out. Once it was out of my system, i felt like myself again.
I was on OZ for 4 months. I am a type 2 Diabetic of 20 years. A1c went down slightly, and lost only 8 pounds. I definately had serious thoughts of suicide and virtually stopped eating (no desire to eat or sustain life). This, along with other side effects , caused me to make the decision to stop taking the med. I had never had suicidal thoughts before.
I took it and after 2 weeks I had extreme intrusive depressive thoughts couldn't stop crying and felt the pit of despair..my brain didn't feel right this is not normal depression feeling this was a horrendous feeling of helplessness that went away gradually as soon as i stopped and it felt like im hungover...this drug can cause extreme mood shifts in some ppl and ppl need to be aware of it..not every one will have those side effects but some will
same thing for me. initially was taking Trulicity for my Type-2, doctor suggested i switch to Ozempic, started to lose more weight than when taking Trulicity, in fact Ozempic dried up all my muscles weight, I wasn't too happy about it. But gradually the depression and anxiety started settling in. Awful feeling. never felt so down. even made me stop going to the gym. switched back to Trulicity and my mood significantly improved. That is just me, others may get different results.
The research paper contradicts what I read on Reddit. If you start skimming the comments, people are asking if anyone else feels depressed on the medication:(
Interesting studies. I'm very glad I'm seeing a therapist while going on my Zepbound journey. Unraveling the societal and medication causes of depression can be complicated.
It must be used in combination with good overall habits. If you use it to just suppress appetite without any lifestyle changes anyone would get depressed. Fasting has been linked with depression. So it makes sense that something that helps you eat less would have similar adverse effects.
Hi, doc. Im taking Escitalopram and Quetiapine for depression and anxiety. My dietitian advised to try Saxenda and said it is ok to take it with the meds. However when i take Saxenda, i feel anxious but what im wondering is if its because I usually feel anxious when trying something new and knowing/expecting some seriuos side effects or is it rather from the liraglutide.
Hi dr Dan. My name is Tina. I would like to book an appointment I started with those empath, but with insurance I had to switch to Mojarro I’m on 7.5 I’ve been on it eight and half months down 40 pounds lifelong struggle with weight and I do have some questions for you. I am 70, so let me know how. I book an appointment with you. Thank you.
Hey @theofficialdrdan currently the highest dose of Ozempic in my country is 1mg can I inject 2 pens (1mg pen + .5pen) or (1mg pen + 1mg pen) to dose up? Hope you could answer this :(
been on 1 mg a week Ozempic for 2 years plus.. I lost over 60 lbs in less one year. No signs of Depression. What you are talking about is anecdotal heresy . Unsubbed...
I was on it for 2 weeks ended up calling 911 for a mental break down and anxiety ..just because u didn't experience it dosent mean it can't cause it in other ppl ..I lost 11 lbs in weeks no physical symptoms..but extreme intrusive depressive thoughts non stop crying and feeling really down and dark

Good Studies have not been done for people taking it for only diabetes that have also experienced depression/anxiety yet.
How have you kept the weight off? I actually ate well before this medicine but my PCOS caused extreme issues with IR and blood glucose.

The mental health side of all this is VERY underfocused-on. 😬
*Really* glad they did this study, and that you did a vid on it, Dan. 👍

I think this is correct. Food plays a large part in our lives, and when it's cut off as a comfort source, it's hard for some people to deal with it.
Good point

No I think the drug actually causes these issues.

I was on a low dose for a month. Lost desire for anything. Couldn’t get out of bed. I’m stopping.

The same thing happened to me, it was an awful nightmare.
Same. It took about 10-14 days of being off of the need before I was feeling good again!

Thank you so much very informative video ❤❤❤❤❤
All my mental health meds stopped working I believe especially my adhd meds which I feel maybe gave me the depression. IDK.
Thank you. A good video, as usual
People who use food to comfort themselves may experience some depression. It has nothing to do with simaglutide.
This is such an amazing channel. Thanks again Dr. Dan for educating and offering support to this community 😊🫶

Compelling it’s used for addiction so certainly plays on dopamine.
