In this one I meet Magalie, a cycle tourer from Switzerland. Believe it or not she was the first loaded-up cycle tourer I met riding in the same direction for over 5 months! She’s only out riding for 2 weeks in NZ, but still aiming to cover a sizeable loop from Auckland, up the west coast to Cape Reinga and back down to Auckland via the east within that time.

@@Skulltruck08 Well i mean you've got to think about that you will only live once, and some things you have to (or are better to do) you're younger... Even if its not around the world, since that takes too long if you are pursuing a career, and only a few months, it is a great experience that makes you become much wiser. If you don't do something amazing cause you're fearful of it, you'll never have the chance to experience that adventure and learn from it. And about being dangerous, avoid large, heavy travelled roads, and you'll be fine.

Great you got a room for the night at Matakohe and Dargaville. We were hosting a fellow youtuber that evening as well. The One Good Road. Sad response at Ahipara - it seems like an odd place that still hasn't worked out that cycle touring is bringing them in more revenue every year. In February more than 3 000 riders pass through there on the Tour Aotearoa alone... many reports of negative behaviour... hope they sort that attitude out.

Hi Ed, I've been loosely following you on Facebook and here during your travels but hadn't watched from the beginning. Well I started from your first video a few weeks back and got as far as Bishkek. Then I got ill two days ago and have just binged watched you from the start of Return to The Steppe to here. You've got me through a few rough days. Your efforts are nothing short of inspirational. Can't wait for the US films.
Swiss people are not normally this happy/smiley in my experience, but then this corner of youtube is always unreasonably cheerful :-) I have no idea what was so funny, but it was good to see people in that 'no-one knows why we are laughing any more' state, after the 3rd glass of wine :-) 70 miles on sand sounds like a terrible idea, but it does seem quite solid.
Girls do this for sexual reasons. Female laughing loud was always a marker of invitation to intercourse, throughout human history.
So pleased that your back issues have let up enough to remount. Good company only adds to your elevated mood. I’ve watched all your videos and never heard you mention back issues before. I couldn’t help but think part of the cause might have been a week or so sitting in the camper. Whenever I’ve clocked days and miles behind the wheel my back is wrecked for a week. I hope all is well. You’re approaching my part of the world, Colorado. Springtime in the Rockies can bring wildly changing weather and deep snows. Wishing you the best. I have no clue what they were laughing about, but I started laughing too... There are way more good people in the world than there are bad ones, but those bad ones... boy! They drag the entire species down.
They were laughing because they were drunk.
Not only that but I can say even the poorest and worst countries in the world far more than 90 % of the people are good, friendly, honest. It is only a tiny minority of 2 or 3 % idiots, thieves, thugs, rapists, they spoil it for everyone, they drag the entire species down.
@@krollpeter Actually, recently I realised, that poor countries have more kind people. In richer countries people are just too careful and selfish. Not blaming them in any way, it's the enviropment.
But people in poor countries know how to live the life in many cases :)

@@krollpeter I live in Armenia. It's somewhere in the middle between EU and Asia from the quality of life point of view, if You will.
I travel to Moscow often, and I can clearly see that people are much more careful there. Never been to EU just yet, but I can imagine that the situation would be similar there, too.
It's just something about being poor that makes people more social and.. eh, warm? Haha. Not all the cases of course, it could go the other side, too. But the opposite is true more often :)

You don't take it personal, please. In NZ there are a number of people who don't want to have visitors, companions, anyone. They are staying there because they just want to be on their own, mostly.

Not sure if this is possible, but I would love to see a "bumper cam" of the unicycle. You could mount a gopro at the front of the handle of the unicycle, that should be some great footage (it might need to be stablized though).
That neighbor should be ashamed. Wine always treat you well. What great new friends. Hope you keep in contact with the folks who been so kind.

Was this the first part of your entire trip where you travelled in an westerly direction?
I know it's a bit late now, but when touring avoid anti inflammatory pain killers (e.g. Ibuprofen) because when you put your body under so much stress, a large amount of them can cause liver failure, advice from Mark Beaumont there
