  • Video #698: When you get this one right, I'm sure you'll agree this is one of the most addictive polymer clay beads to make... More Info: www.beadsandbea... Polymer Clay Tutor.
In this video I'm going to share with you the secrets to rolling the perfect Swirly Lentil Beads from Polymer Clay.
Swirly Lentil beads are quite addictive to make... it is fun to watch the color pull up from the sides and twist into a wonderful swirl in the center.
They can be made with scrap clay, with canes or with perfectly planned sections of clay.
They are fairly easy to make but they do take practice and there are a few tips and tricks to getting them right.
You'll need a smooth surface to work on. I am using the We-R Memory Keepers Glass Mat Review for Polymer Clay.
And you will need a small piece of smooth see-through material such as an acrylic stamp block, a piece of Plexiglas, or even an old cd case.
During the rolling process there are a few thing you must remember. Keep the acrylic block level. Use your fingertips like little table legs, to keep your top plastic surface plastic level, and at the right height.
If your top plastic surface is uneven, the bead won't be round.
Keep your circular motions even. Too big, and the bead will become a pointy bi-cone bead. Too small and the bead will become very flat and hard to roll.
Same goes for the pressure. Too light and the bead will be pointy, and to hard the bead flattens out.
Color gets pulled from the outside edges and swirled into the center. So remember that when placing your patterns or cane slices on the bead.
Always do your circles in the same direction. If you change directions partway through, the swirl will untwist and start going in the other direction.
In can take a while to get the swirl you want.
Firm clay moves slowly and will take more turns... soft clay moves quickly, but can be harder to keep the shape even.
After rolling, let the clay rest for a bit to firm up. Do another quick roll to reshape before baking.
If you try and handle a freshly rolled lentil bead without allowing it to rest and cool down, it can become distorted and will finger printed easily.
If you are interested in a video on piercing lentil beads or other lentil bead videos, leave a comment in the section below.

Thank you, I am so happy to hear you prefer this style! (I don't like voice-overs, either. They feel contrived somehow.) I see your name includes fondant... I'm assuming you also do cakes? Try this technique with fondant as well... I'm thinking it would probably work. Lots of clay techniques also work with fondant. Have fun!

That pretty awesome to watch when you did the second one with the mod cane pieces. You could probably make some kind of jig or tool to do this. If you take one of those stamp blocks, drill a hole in each corner, take a bolt and put a nut a bit in from the end, put it in the hole and put another nut on the end to secure it in the block, do this to each corner so you have 4 "feet" like a little table and then add a felt pad to the head of the bolt like those used on furniture or coasters so the block will freely slide on a smooth surface. You could adjust the height to make any side bead by moving the nuts up and down on the bolt and you could also make them pretty consistent in size and shape. Hope that made sense.

Thank you so much Cindy. I have watched so many people across TH-cam making these, but they have simply failed to explain in any detail the mechanics of making them. I will watch this a few times and have a go at making a small one for the BPCG Anniversary in Sept when we are all taking beads (I am very new to clay) for a national children's Cancer charity called Beads of Courage. It's a wonderful cause and I hope people look it up on the BPCG Website or Google it. All the best from Scotland xx

Thankyou for sharing your talent and creativity, greatly appreciated. :) Been wanting to make beads for ages, but thought it would cost me quite a bit of money for the bits and bobs so been saving up. Your ingenious use for the CD case was just brilliant and not having to get bead makers etc will save me money that i can spend on some great clay colors to make (hopefully) beads as beautiful as yours.

Thank you for your kind comments! There are lots of improvised tools you can find in your house to get started. I would suggest watching several of my videos on bead making, baking and working with polymer clay in general. The one tool I would recommend getting is a separate oven thermometer. They are around $5 or so at the grocery store but will save you from under baking or burning your clay. Have fun, practice and enjoy the learning process!

Great timing!! I have been working on these for the last week, and though the swirls are working out ok, I would really appreciate another video on piercing the holes. My son visited and saw a set I had done for myself, a wire wrapped pendant and earrings. He asked if I could make an even larger pendant half red and half black. Half & half, sure, but he wanted it to be about 2 1/2" across, flat with a pierce through top to bottom for a goth wire wrap that only goes half way around. This has presented a whole new challenge for me! That's a long hole to pierce!!!!! I've tried several that have been wasted, next I'm trying a top and bottom layer with the wire sandwiched between. Any other ideas? Anyone? I'm also having trouble getting it pressed flat smoothly.

but be careful, hard plastic often reacts with polymer clay, so any leftover clay on the plastic can eat away at it and melt the plastic, which ruins the plastic as well as the clay that's stuck to it.
That's why I'd be careful with the CD cases.

Try popping them in the fridge or freezer for a litte bit before adding the slices. That should help keep the bead from getting squished while you're handling it. Good luck!

I am so impressed, I am new at polymer clay. I’ve been trying to make flower cane and these lentil beads, is been a little challenging. I am wondering if is because of the clay that I am using? I am using sculpey III I find it very soft. I don’t know if is my clay. Please advise!
