Sidebar - I haven’t even used any of my sewing machines since my husband of 46 years passed away from a massive heart attack Oct 5th, 2023. My life has been turned upside down. We lived in a parsonage and I know live in my camper. After watching this today, my heart actually wants to go back to free motion quilting. Now to put my get up and do it in gear. Congratulations on your brother! The juki needs a lot of attention. You have to oil it often, and the bobbin is underneath the side of the machine. Hard to get to. I love brother machines. Happy sewing!

My machine does not have a Speed Setting...so I can't change that ... sigh...How Fun! Retreat, Sewing, and The Sewing Channel! I still, after 24 years of quilting, have not ventured into the FMQ world...as I am still afraid! I don't sent out quilts to the Spa...I just Stitch in/beside Ditch, straight line quilting... but I just had an idea... go to thrift store, go to bed linens, buy 2 bottoms sheets, AND a white bottom flannel sheet and make a sandwich... then use that to practice FMQ, instead of a pieced quilt top that you have spent hours making...I think that is the trick...to practice on something that is not precious!... the end result can be bound and used as a picnic blanket, given to grandkids for fort making , or cut up to make animal shelter blankets!
I used to practice on Linus quilts. They're usually smaller and easier to maneuver under the needle. Start with something easy like stippling, then move on to loop-de-loops, and from there the world will be your oyster. Angela Walters published a couple of books 10 or 15 years ago that I found very useful. I promise that once you gain the tiniest bit of confidence, the fmq will be your favorite part of making a quilt 🙂
You can also make a sandwich about 18” square, practice and then lay another square (just the top) on that sandwich and stitch again. You can’t use that square for anything but it avoids wasting batting and backing for each practice square.

I find my shoulders get up to my ears within a minute as I try to manoeuvre a double quilt through the small throat of my machine, I’ve never managed to quilt in a relaxed way!
Right....it's hard...but now that you know that about how you quilt...just be mindful and drop shoulders when you think of it.✅

I like to use my ruler foot to do all my free motion quilting. It helps me keep my spacing even. I don't do a lot of ruler work.

I’m with you on the polyester thread , I love Gutermann, it glides beautifully through my machine and no lint too! I tried it with aurifil cotton, as it seemed everyone was advising that, and it was dragging
After watching your videos I've realised how totally inadequate my sewing machine is. ..... I needed to concentrate on a quilting machine, and I didn't. So I now totally get the straight stitch only. Speed vary, needle down.
My Singer is a great 'sewing machine' with a super duper variety of stitches, a button hole function that I ferl I need a button hole degree to use, and will make the quilt top well....but little else.
Free motion quilting can only be described as walking through thick mud.
I will totally finish my mums quilt..... shes unwell with cancer. But certainly won't freemotion another on this machine.
Better start 'coppering up' (saving up) as we Brits say 😅

The poly from 30 years ago is different than it is now. I still have some polly from then. 25 cents from Kmart. You couldn't break it with your hands. It would cut your skin first. I can send you some.

I love your shirt! I bought a Juki tl2000qi. It's great, but no speed control.
I thought, oh I can control it with the foot pedal. I've since bought two stitch controllers, a thousand dollars each.
I dont use either one of them.
Its been a year and I'm finally able to control the speed a little bit with the foot pedal.
That didnt stop me from making a quilt and quilting the snot out of it with the Juki. It's a workhorse!
My next machine is going to be a Juki DX-2000QVP. It has speed control and it has 287 stitches and lots of other goodies...and its under two thousand dollrs!

I saw where both ends were wrapped on pool noodles so they would fit in the area bcuz yr supposed to start in the middle of quilt.

I couldn't bring up the label video, so I'll ask my label question here. I inherited a number of blocks from an apparent blick exchange. I don't know what the original intent was. I have created 8 small quilts from the blocks. My question is: how do I deal with the fact that several different people made the blocks in each quilt? (I have contact info for several of the makers, and will write to them to get whatever history on these blocks that I can.)

Hi. Can you please tell the model number of the quilting foot you use when you turn your machine sideways to FM?
I am an engineer, love symmetry, have programmed for machine design, and find rectilinear designs to be beautiful. I’ve tried free motion quilting. It drives me around the bend. I really, really want to free motion quilt but I can’t let go. Suggestions?
Just start and keep going and realize that you will never get perfect BUT you will get better and better❤
Hi Tracy. Thank you for your tutorials and encouragement. I have been sewing on basic machines for many years, but am looking to upgrade -- as my machine cannot handle even straight line quilting well. FMQ feels really beyond me, but I hope to learn in the future. Can i ask, why did you choose the Juki TL18 over the 2010? Do you think the difference (tension/lift) really makes a difference for quilting?
Great questions. I chose the TL18 Because it came the most "extras" like sewing feet. The TL 18 also has a "micro lifter" for when you are sewing thicker things like bags and such. I make a ton of quilts but I also sew a variety of projects where the microlifter comes in handy... I hope that helps. and PLUS the TL18 is the Top Dog in the TL category...and I figured...why not!!!!

In my brother innovis machine, no matter what I did, every time I was FM quilting and was doing a bend, I always had eyelash effect on the back, so I did play with the tension, and found when I increased it from 2.5 to 5.5, it was absolutely perfect! I’ve since kept that tension throughout, whatever I do, even straight stitching for sewing blocks, as it’s within the range for that kind of stitches anyway. I’ve never looked back, don’t be afraid to increase the tension and keep at it till you get a good result, you can always reduce it back to how it was if it’s not working out, each machine is different and each quilter is different, good luck and I’m sure you will be great 💕

I have a question. I am doing my first tshirt quilt. What is your suggestion on when to quilt it? Before I put the squares together? Or would I quilt it after I assembled my quilt top, put the batting on then put the backing fabric on then quilt it? My quilt is going to be huge tho like a king size. What is the best way to go about quilting these squares?
I would definitely piece everything together first...then make quilt sandwich and then quilt it. If you've never quilted a quilt before then it will be hard if it's too large. But....YOU CAN DO It...where there's a will ...there's a way!!!❤️

@@TheSewingChannel yes I have interfaced each block. I’m doing one with all my old old navy flag shirts from the years. My oldest one was from 2011 and I had to get others off eBay coz I didn’t have those years. This is the 30th anniversary year and so I also I corporated my daughter’s birth years into it (99, 04 and 07) and got 2000 coz it says turn of the century. It’s gonna be an awesome quilt. So I have it laid out how I want it to look and I’m just about at that spot where you sew your squares together. I just don’t know if I should quilt a square at a time then sew the rows together? It’s going to be 6 x 6. 36 12 inch squares

Define regular sewing machine. Mine has a 3 inch table top left of my needle, it's hard enough to sew a 12 inch block straight, nothing supports my fabric so I don't think MY regular sewing machine will work either.
When I say "regular" sewing machine...I mean anything other than industrial...✅
Does your sewing machine have an extension table you can buy? They can increase your sewing area a bit, but make sure you get one that’s designed/compatible for your model.
@@rebeccamulkern1051 no and I just looked in my book. I need to use the darning plate and remove the presser foot. My machine is a Sears Kenmore model 385.12216 got it as a Christmas present 30 years ago from my mother.
