Ah I loved the Victorian Beer Cafe when I was in Halifax recently, although it took me ages to find the loos because it’s so higgledy-piggledy in there haha! 😂🙈 great spot! 🍻
Victorian looks a great boozer...not been Halifax for over 30 years watch Salford RL playing there. If u do the Leeds/Manc Ale Trail..get the longest journey done first to avoid needing a piss after all the ale😂 I was in Manchester at the time so did it from Leeds backwards. Great vid Ethan👍🍺
@@SlurpyDave254 cheers mate, I’m actually doing the Ale Trail next month so keep your eyes peeled for that one 👀 Halifax is great for pubs and well worth a visit, we didn’t even get around all the pubs we were hoping to! Lots more to go at! 🍻
Another great video Ethan, I really like the pans rounds the pubs just with music. Nice to see Ken in character “do you do Camra discount “ in København, you can take the boy out of Lancashire but you can’t take Lancashire out of the boy 😅. That barman in the Grayston Unity needs lessons in how to hold a beer glass, I hope his fingers were clean 🤮
@@RealAlesRealPubs The "Meandering Bear" is named after a Grizzly bear which escaped from Halifax Zoo in 1913. The bear left the zoo at Exley and was seen wandering around the streets of Siddal, residents ran in panic when the saw the bear. The bear was eventually tracked down in the woods near the Calder & Hebble Navigation Canal, the animal was tranquelised and returned to the zoo. The Halifax Zoo closed in 1917 due to a shortage of customers and food for the animals during World War One. Another great real ale pub to check out is The Cross Keys at Siddal.
another great video. losing my mind over all those cask ales. i think i've only seen a cask ale once where i live (it's not a tradition in california haha). a local brewer made one firkin and charged about $9 for a pint (our pints are 16 oz/473 ml if poured correctly-RARE!- compared to 19 oz imperial pint in the UK). unfortunately it's mostly all about the hop bombs here. do you get many problems wearing a Combat 84 shirt?
@@RealAlesRealPubs I personally don't like carrying my debit card around when I am out for a few beers, therfe is always a chance that I might lose it or it could get stolen by a pickpocket. Are they legally allowed to refuse to take legal tender? I went to Dukes once, I won't ever go back there due to their cashless bar policy.
I agree with slurpydave. You could swap the pipes over on the tens of keg craft beers and nobody would know. There's such a variety of real ale nowadays that its impossible to choose. They do all fall into a handful of categories so you can at least look for a bitter or IPA. Suppose its a good thing as in the 70's the game was to get the breweries to produce some real ale. In those days when there were tied houses, you sought out breweries and visited their pubs. Tied houses still exist. What is possible thank God, is to avoid the many beers with added 'flavours'. How can you have a gin and tonic flavoured ale?
In these pubs in Britian do they let you have a taste sample for free; or, do they offer a sampler tray of six or so small glasses to taste for a price? There are so many bloody chioces there! I hate paying money for something if don't like the taste. In the brewerys here in Missoula, they will let you have a few free tastes to narrow it down to what you want. Yeah, if I walk into a bar and it smells like a dirty rag or dirty mop, or worse, I bail.
Yeah most pubs will let you have a taster of a beer if you ask for one, generally about a 25ml shot worth but sometimes a bit more generous. Some pubs also have flights which are usually 3x1/3rd pint measures or will just sell their beers in measures as low as 1/3rd pint so you can try a few. This is especially common in craft beer venues where stronger beers like DIPAs and Imperial Stouts are often served.

A pint in the UK is 20 fluid ounces, not 19.
Great video. Shame about the Dukes being a cashless bar!
Sadly it’s getting all too common now!
