Agree. A civil society has healthy boundaries & dressing for the context one is in is part of that.

As cool as casual clothing can be, there is such dignity in dressing well. I love your point #2. When I went from dressing casually all the time to dressing in more traditional clothes (as much as I can without weirding out my clients since I work in music) I noticed some major changes in my life. For one much more "quality" women were interested in me, and now I am married to a woman who is full of class and has a high value for aesthetics and behavior. Then I noticed I got promoted like 5 times in a year at my day job, then my music career took off. In general people were valuing me a lot more. I think it was more an outward sign of an inward change, rather than just the clothes changing. I felt like I had to increase my quality as a man to match my look. Dressing well really went a long way in my life.

Celebrated journalist and author, Gay Talese, has always dressed well. He claims that even when working at home he wears a suit or sport jacket. Here are two quotes from Talese: "Dressing up says you are proud of your work and your profession." And, "Putting on a beautifully designed suit elevates my spirit, extols my sense of self, and helps define me as a man to whom details matter."

I've been rethinking the kind of attire for church and i broke it down to that i want my time at the divine service to be set apart from the rest of the week. So i want to dress better on Sunday. Not to look better but to say my time with God at church is different than my time at work during the week. Thanks for the video.

I thought this video was great and very thought provoking. As a young person I really value the cultural insights of older people to which I am blind to because I grew up with these contemporary values and idees.
Personally I think you could do more similar videos without shifting the focus of your channel on this kind of stuff!

I can honestly say that I have never worn a tie like that in my life, and I don’t foresee that changing in the future. I have always maintained that the only way I’m ever wearing a suit and tie is if the suit is seersucker and the tie is a string tie, and that I’ll top it all off with a Panama hat.
Probably the most formal I have ever worn was Navy Service Dress. That’s ribbons without the medals. Most of the time, dressed up for a man of my station is wearing a button up shirt and slacks. I have been a pallbearer twice. The first time I wore a vest. The second time I found a sport coat at Goodwill about thirty minutes before the funeral.
I do have a bolo tie around here somewhere though. Been a long time since I wore it, but I have actually worn those willingly, because they don’t make me feel stupid and out of place.

There's definitely something to be said for dressing for the situation. You wouldn't wear a suit and tie to work in a woodshop (it creates several hazards and will also make the suit dirty). At the same time, you wouldn't take the woodshop attire and wear it while playing with a symphony orchestra (or playing organ at church). As a DPM who also as elementary music classes, there's a spectrum between attire too formal and too casual where there is appropriate attire for the job.

I dress like what many would call slobish and do I put thought into it and I see beauty in that and others do to or so they tell me...Aesthetics is very much a question if cultural context if u you dont understand the cultural context of certain subcultures like punk or hip hop for example you would consider it slobish maybe but in reality its your ignorance to the ideas that are behind some aesthetics that makes them appear unpleasing to you. Also I could also mistake a very classic style that you describe and associate it to mere conformity to western establishment and interpret what you intend to appear as gentleman like as elitist. You do make a lot of very valid points I just think your values which I do share , as far as I can tell from the videos Ive watched so far, are not necessarily linked to that one kind of apparel.

It would be helpful if you could do a video that’s discusses the issue you mention at minute 11 in light of Scripture. I’ve had multiple people from different churches (usually baptist or “non denominational”) say that we should share everything with other believers. They usually cite “confess your sins to one another” from James. It always bothered me; I enjoyed hearing your view.

Cool video. Very interesting. I’m Lutheran, but I’m the working class. I don’t have the money or time to play dress up. Long days at the factory 6 days a week is what I dress for.

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Very well said. Totally resent pastors who "dress down" when preaching then wonder why their sermons lack punch and criticized for being disrespectful to Christ.

Not that it was overly emphasized growing up. But it was always taught to me that I am going before the king of kings and Lord of lords. If we went to a banquet at the White House to meet the president, we would dress up for that occasion. How much more then when we go before the King of our world leaders? Today there is a lack of reverence for the Lord and people just show up with their jeans on. The culture has played a huge role in this. And it eventually trickles into the church. Now Lutherans wear t shirts and jeans when they come to approach the King. This was not so back even in the church I was brought up in. Also, to emphasize that dressing a certain way doesn’t reveal the heart is very false and misleading.

I thought that scripture talks about not dressing to draw attention to ourselves? I think the verses were talking about women and not wearing jewelry and dressing modestly, but doesn't it not also apply to men? Wouldn't it border on vanity? I thought what's most important is what's on in inside, God cares more about the heart than what type of shirt I'm wearing. Not to mention a lot of that classic men's wear is usually pretty expensive, I would rather spend money on more important things, such as others in need. You said that if you dress well then you are more productive? But isn't that a heart/motivation issue that needs to be addressed on the inside? If a person needs a certain type of jacket and pants in order to be more productive then I think they have a bigger problem going on that needs to be dealt with. You aren't as effective when you're in your pajamas? Haha do you have any evidence to back that up? That's a very subjective and relative claim. I disagree with it. It's also interesting how this is the one video where he presents no scripture in order to support his position. Is God more glorified or pleased when I wear a plain white tee and blue jeans as opposed to something nice? I don't think so, therefore aesthetics in this sense doesn't matter.

    • @DrJordanBCooper
      @DrJordanBCooper  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are several articles and studies that demonstrate the connection between our clothing and mental state/productivity. Here is one example: www.forbes.com/sites/ruchikatulshyan/2013/10/17/is-casual-dress-killing-your-productivity-at-work/
Vanity is bad, certainly. If someone is overly obsessed with how they look, or is simply using their clothes to display wealth or status, that is not good. I don't think that means that we aren't allowed to buy clothes that we enjoy.

"Do not worry about your life. Is not life more than food? Isn't the body more than the clothes you wear?" .... .... .... Dr. Cooper, you are making solid "symbolic" points, but your argument is starting from a tunnel-vision perspective (earthbound ... like something from Forbes). :/ The argument of being more productive only holds water in very niche office-type career fields. --Painters and construction workers can transform a room without thinking twice about the condition of their clothes.-- Dignity and prudence are good things. Heirloom clothing can be a good thing too. But aesthetic beauty in and of itself is not a virtue ... (see Comparison: Esther -- who saved a nation vs Herod's niece -- who beheaded God's prophet). Mormons and Roman Catholics have things nailed when it comes to aesthetics in exchange for nailing the door shut on the real Jesus. The KING says do not worry about your petals, seek His Kingdom. In my limited experience of giving away clothes, I've found more joy than any of the times I've been suited up and shoe-shined. When we give freely in response to God's gifts to us, we are best dressed. >>>> (See also "Do Not Worry" by Rain for Roots)

"That which is beautiful is good"? So a gorgeous, well dressed heroin addict top model is better than Mother Theresa? Beauty is the first trick Satan used on us, the fruit looked good to eat... Mirroring God is about taking care of the body He gave you (keeping it as healthy and capable as possible to do His will), and having a good carring heart towards others. When you do that, people don't care about the way you dress, that is, good hearted people. On top of that, a person's sense of what is beautiful is personnal, like it or not it's not universal, you seem to think that your standards of aestetics are those that are right over everybody else's. If I remember well, there were plenty of rules in the OT for ceremonies and such, and how it was proper to appear before God there was no dress code that I am aware of, he mustn't care that much. I'd rather have the inside of my cup shiny than the outside. Even though I like the outside, it comes way after...
