    Dude, I just bought my son a 2007 xterra, Really good shape, low miles, and just yesterday, the back door did this. I'm trying this now. Thanks so much.

    I'm glad this is still proving useful for fellow Nissan owners after all these years! We still have ours, and one of the doors did stick again a few months back... I had to watch my video to remember how to open it!

      Thanks Jemal, your discription of the problem tweeked my mechanical knowledge to use passive vibration as as a weapon against sticky gremlins.

      @@glenedwards9846 yes, it was a great idea by another viewer to use a rubber mallet. Much easier than using x-ray vision with my paper clip. It should work to get the lock to release when the problem first occurs.

    Even after 8 years this video still works. Have a 2008 Xterra, that the door just started this. I couldn't get the latch to work from the side sticking. But took off the drumet from the other side, i wasn't going over high enough and then understood what you were saying. It worked when I went back to the original door. Huge thanks for this video. Saved me money for sure.

    Worked for my 1999 Nissan Pathfinder! Last night I was looking at some other TH-cam videos and I happened to open this video you posted 9 years ago. I ended up watching all your related videos that explained the solution you used on your Xterra. My driver's side rear door has been locked shut for the last 4 years. It had that exact same floppy exterior door handle that you described in your video. I always figured I'd end up taking it into a body shop for an expensive repair and I never bothered to do it. We just quit using that door as if it didn't exist. My Pathfinder is now 25 years old and it works perfectly except for that darned door! This morning, I immediately attempted your repair trick. I could not see the little part that you described so I just sprayed the crap out of everything I could hit through the little hole in the door handle. I sprayed it with PB Blaster and also Silicone spray. I poked around with a coat hanger rather blindly and nothing happened. Crap! Disappointed, I went back into the house for breakfast and coffee. I came out an hour later because I just wanted to try again. I sprayed it again and poked around with the stiff wire and still nothing. Then I remembered some of the folks used a rubber mallet and hit the door frame to jar it loose. I didn't have one of those so I just started to give it a hard hit with the palm of my hand all around the door frame and door handle. After each hit I would feel the door handle to see if there was any change. After about 10 hits, I felt the door handle and it felt tighter. I held my breath and pulled it and couldn't believe my eyes when the door opened after being locked for 4 years. Now that it was open, I pulled off the interior door panel and I wanted to do your spring repair. Well, it was a surprise for me since the 1999 Pathfinder is totally different from the Xterra in your video. The Pathfinder does not have cables since it has the old school metal rods. I could not find any way possible to get at that little mechanism where you put your spring. At least now I had access to the rods and had my hand jammed all the way up into the door as far as it would go. I hosed everything down with another 1/2 can of silicone spray and moved every rod back and forth while locking/unlocking the door and pulling on the door handle while I sprayed silicone. I never did see anything that I was spraying at since I was just going by feel with my hand inside the door. Finally, I figured that was as good as it was going to get and I would just accept my fate as to whether it will work or not. I then put the door all back together with the inside panel and screws. I stood outside the door with by fingers crossed and locked and unlocked the door several times. It worked properly every time! I have no idea if it is permanently fixed because could never see the root cause of the problem. All I know is that it works today for the first time in 4 years. I had pretty much given up on ever using that door again. Thank you for the inspiration to tackle this repair on my own!

    Had the same problem with my Nissen Pathfinder. I used my medium size rubber mallet,gave the outside of the door lock three or four gentle taps to send a vibration through tthe lock and the spring inside the lock did the rest and the door opened. Used WD40 to lubricate locking mechanism. The the rubber mallet did not mess the paint work or leave dents. Do not use a hammer or metel tool. Happy days again!

    Mine got stuck on a below zero day back in February. I tried many things i saw online short of taking off the door panel with no luck. I tried this the other day and it worked!!! Thank you very much for posting this. One additional thing I did was to spray WD-40 in there before using the coat hanger. After I got the door open I greased up the mechanism with some lithium grease.

    Thank you very much for making and sharing this video! I was finally able to get my rear Pathfinder door open today. I tried using a coat hanger and paper clip, but I could not get it to work for me. I drilled out the defective rear door handle. I picked up a replacement rear door handle at the junk yard. Now everything works perfectly!!!

    I did it! I did it! I did it! Thank you Jemal! I'm far from a mechanic - just a mom who can't afford these endless mechanical and shop charges on my 2006 Pathfinder. Door has been stuck for a few weeks now making the backseat useless unless people climb over my daughter's car seat. You video was amazing! I used WD40 and a paper clip (couldn't bend the coat hanger). Not sure I'm ready to brave taking the door panel off and replacing the cables - especially in this cold weather! But maybe a summer adventure! Any tips on replacing my broken fuel gauge- LOL!

      Thanks Heather.... I'm so glad this is still helping people all these years! Oh, a failed fuel gauge is most often the sending unit in the fuel tank.... If I recall, there was a re-call on the Xterra sending unit... we ran out of gas before the gauge once about 10 years ago, and Nissan replaced the unit.

    Thanks Jemal, I made a similar tool to yours using a spare spoke from a bike wheel. Tried it out on an unstuck door first so I could pop the plug and have a look for where I needed to place the hook on the tool. Got the stuck door open within a couple of minutes. Hopefully a trip to the auto parts store to get some penetrating lubricant will be the end of this annoyance.

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, sooner or later the return spring can't return! It's a simple and cheap fix if you watch the other videos in the playlist...

  • @my88k-mrr98
    @my88k-mrr98 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    In most cases the outside handle gets dirt build up that causes the handle return spring to bind. That binding will put the mechanism in the halfway point where neither handle will work. If you gently use the inside handle to snap back (opening the handle all the way and letting it loose) it will work the outside handle spring. Once the spring works back you will be able to open the door from the outside if the handle isn't broken.
    The tell tale sign that the outside handle is going to lock up is the handle starts to flop around. When the return spring is fully loose the handles will shut tight.
    Remedy......
    When the handle start to get loose this is an indication that the return spring is binding.....You should spray WD40 on the mechanism through the little holes on the door where you access the nuts that hold the handle on the door. As you spray WD40 snap the outside handle and you will see it tighten up.

    Jemal... thank you so much for this. Did it with a coat hanger.
    As for the fix, good old fashion WD40 for me. The area between the surface and the "return switch" was a bit gummy so the lubricant fixed the "weak return". I was able to spray it from the view hole.
    I wanted to provide some better action pics but it is very hard to get a flash and a camera in the hole together.

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's only a temporary solution to get the door open so you can get to it to fix it! I disconnect the power locks so the door does not lock until you can fix it! Do NOT operate the outside door handle! Try again after a day or two of driving.... the vibration will help retract the cable to make it easier as long as you do not touch the outside handle!

  • @JemalCRM
    @JemalCRM  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was a reply to a viewer who just couldn't do the trick (and it really isn't an easy thing to do!) I hope it helps as another thing to try.... Over the years MANY Nissan vehicles have had this problem. If lawyers could follow my procedure, we might have had recalls by now! Has anyone ever been trapped inside? The door won't open from the inside either when the lock jams with this problem!!
    I'm actually surprised by how many do manage to do it! You really need a keen mechanical sense to almost have x-ray vision to snag the little tab to help retract the sticky cable! Even the sentence is almost impossible to follow!
    The best advice was from another viewer... Blast WD40 thru the opening (where I put the paperclip!) to try to hit that cable, then gently tap with a rubber mallet (or your knuckle like knocking on a door) around the area of the door handle and gently work the lock manually (by repeatedly trying to unlock it using the MANUAL knob on the inside of the door, by reaching around thru the front door) until it releases. DO NOT try the door handle!!! Every time you do that, you must start over trying to retract that cable that PREVENTS the door from unlocking. It is as though someone is holding the door handle in the open position as you are trying to unlock it.
    If you do get it open, I suggest you disconnect the door from the central locking control until you can fix the problem (by removing the door panel as I show in another video and unplugging the power lock). Otherwise the door will jam every time it is locked and someone operates the handle.... goes to open the door.

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The child safety lock disables the inside handle, so the door will only open from outside. If yours won't, it seems like you have the original problem... the release cable is not retracting, thus the lock won't release.

    My 2004 Nissan Xterra REAR HATCH (not rear doors) got jammed shut. The Manuel key would no longer lock or unlock the REAR HATCH with the key in the key hole on the rear hatch. I FIGURED OUT if I lock the door using my key on the drivers side door, in the key hole and gently turn it TWICE it will lock ALL DOORS INCLUDING the REAR HATCH. And does the SAME to unlock all doors when gently turning it TWICE the opposite way - it unlocks ALL DOORS including the REAR HATCH. It (the rear hatch) won’t lock or unlock with the key in the rear hatch key hole BUT I can now open it with the double action TURN using the driver side key hole with the key.

    I can't open my rear door from the out side or inside but my car is Nissan titan ,any idea what I need to do ?

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      HI Tony, Sorry missed my notification of your question... While I have no experience with the Titan, I have to think Nissan uses similar designs across models. What happens is that the cable that is worked by the door handle gets "lazy" and does not return all the way when you let go of it. This causes the locked door to NOT unlock (as though someone was holding the door handle in the "open" position as you try to unlock). You must find a way to reach in to that cable and retract it to allow the door to unlock.
      Sometimes you can help by repeatedly "snapping" the door handle, or working the lock from inside the door by hand- NOT with the electric switch. If you get it open this way, DON'T lock that door again until you can pull the mechanism out and lube it, or make the spring stronger like I show... Or it WILL seize up again!
      I'm AMAZED that after all these years Nissan acts so clueless about this, and charges HUNDREDS in labor and changes out all kinds of door guts to "fix" it!!

      @iykist 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Figure what out? The pathfinder does not have the same rubber that can be lifted up and a wire inserted, it has a hard plastic that does not lift up, if you are so smart why don't you figure it out and show how it is done.

      @@iykist hi I have a 1997 Pathfinder I just got for work. My driver's side rear door was seized they could not figure it out. I sprayed a penetrating oil into the lock waited maybe 10-15 minutes tried the outside lock a couple times and it opened right up. dealership wanted to break and tear apart my inside door panel.

      I'm actually surprised by how many do manage to do it! You really need a keen mechanical sense to almost have x-ray vision to snag the little tab to help retract the sticky cable! Even the sentence is almost impossible to follow!
      The best advice was from another viewer... Blast WD40 thru the opening (where I put the paperclip!) to try to hit that cable, then gently tap with rubber mallet around the area of the door handle and gently work the lock manually (by repeatedly trying to unlock it using the MANUAL knob on the inside of the door, by reaching around thru the front door) until it releases.

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha Ha Haaa... I'm afraid you're the dummy! It does not work to "break in"... and I mentioned that, but some folks just don't listen or understand! All you're doing is retracting the cable to allow the door to unlock in the normal manner.

    Will this work for a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder LE door

    • @JemalCRM
      @JemalCRM  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say for sure but it seems the design would be similar. Try the WD40 and rubber mallet trick I explain below as you manually click the lock back and fourth to see if that cable will retract. And DON'T try the door handle until you feel the lock click to the open position. Then don't the lock the door again!
