A lovely morning with the camera

  • Well sometimes you just have to go out and see what happens, no plan and no big ideas. Happily on this occasion the conditions were great and in the space of a couple of hours the Bronica had gone through a roll of HP5+ and I had some decent images.
Film choice was critical here, as was exposure and development. By rating the film at EI200 I gave plenty of exposure to the shadows but I also cut back the development time by 30% which ensured the highlights didn't block up on the negatives. This resulted in easy to print negatives with no need for excessive burning in or flashing.
    Equipment Used:
    Bronica SQA-i with 80mm, 150mm and x1.4 converter
Velbon 655 Tripod with Manfrotto MG460 head
    Ilford HP5+
    Vlogging equipment:
    Panasonic G80 with 12-32 lens
    Rode Videomicro

Going out without a particular agenda or plan can aid greatly in reducing the pressure to produce to a certain level, especially if you haven't been out for a while. It also helps to remain open to possibilities and be captivated by what might have been overlooked if pursuing a specific idea, as evidenced by your lovely images here. And your B-roll just continues to impress and delight.

Steve, besides being a peaceful teacher, you're a silky smooth vlog producer. With the A-roll from your handheld action camera and the unseen camera on a tripod, the pause-and-take-a-breath B-roll inserts, the variety of camera angles, framing, and closeups, and the crisp editing complete with mood-enhancing underscore and sparse-but-effective transitions . . . well, Steve, this video could be subtitled "Learn to Vlog in Under Nine Minutes!" Was that duck laughing because you didn't have a theme, loi. Gorgeous conditions Steve & as soon as I saw the "fave tree" I knew the image was going to be a good one - simple but very effective although I disagree with you & it was a good image. The shots at 5:24 & 7:17 though were corkers, beautiful scenes and although I don't know anything of the technical nature of the developing you described before showing it I would say the end result was a dam fine one - even the little strands of grass poking up before the old dilapidated fence worked so well. Of the two I think the 2nd one which had more contrast was my fave. A very pleasant 9 mins with my morning cuppa this fine Friday morning. Atb Al
