Omens have horrible thermals. From personal experience. Even their desktops do not have adequate cooling. Their policy is horrible too. In their eyes it's not a problem unless it's hitting 95c.
@@gearsofwill9 over 90 is way too much but every gaming laptop sometimes hits that point. I actually managed to keep the temperatures constantly under 90 with undervolting so that's not too bad. Hopefully they'll improve cooling with next generation of Omen that is comming out soon.
@@TechFinds also how did you undervolt the omen I've been trying to figure it out. The voltage slider In the omen command center doesn't seem to do anything.
The HP Omen 17 Chassis has issues with cooling if you don’t keep Bios up to date, as my full 1070 GPU got fried within a year and a half. Either warranty up or monitor the temperatures as often as possible.
Tech Finds when I had it no. Usually apply new thermal paste every 2 years. I ended up buying a Zephyrus S and have never had an issue. Loved the HP until it died on me.
@@SilentButDudley Mate, you better take care of repasting once for 6 months. It's a gaming laptop, it gets hot and it needs to have fresh thermal compound to provide good thermal performance. High temperatures affect longavity of CPU and GPU.
Check out the one that i linked in the description: amzn.to/2IPVylC It comes with 144Hz display, you can read it in the product's description on this Amazon page.
@@TechFinds yeah u r right but in the customer question and answers section they say it's a 60hz panel and can connect to an external high refresh rate display.
It all comes down to cooling system so the Scar would be a better choice. Lower temperatures = better performance. I always say that Scar II is better laptop overall, but it's also more expensive. If it comes to gaming i thi k it's a better pick too, because it has smoother display, better keyboard and speakers. Ofc coolig too.
Tech Finds Thank you so much man!!! You’re honestly the best. The fact that you took the time to even reply and give me a detailed answer. I’m going to send all my friends your way on TH-cam. I know you’ll get some fat checks from TH-cam in the future 🙏🏿
It depends on the specs. If you consider both laptops with the same hardware i think that Omen will be better for a stunent, because it's more portable and it has a good battery.
My model was from the UK, so the model number for the Omen with the same specs will be different in your country. Just look at the specs and find the same configuration. I don't remember model number tho
I dont know much about gaming tech but i do own the omen and its really good! But whenever i go into these videos i hear people saying asus is instantly better. Completely different comment section this time
It all depends on your preferences. I made a comparison, said my opinion and people can make their own choice. :) HP is not bad, just some people don't like it because of thermals. The thing is that if you tweak the settings and change thermal paste the temperatures are good. With Scar 2 you have it right out of the box in most cases.
3D video editing is a very demanding kind of work. 6-core CPU will handle this, but may not be super fast. However if you need a portable device for that job I think that Scar will be better as it has better cooling
Tec Finds, I think you have the information about which one has G-Sync backwards. Can you confirm that the Omen is the one with G-Sync and not the Scar 2? I think it might be the other way around.
Scar doesn't support G-Sync (i said in the video). If it comes to Omen the G-Sync is available only with 144hz and 240hz displays. If you find Omen with 60Hz 1080p or 60hz 4K display it will not have G-Sync.
www8.hp.com/us/en/laptops/product-details/product-specifications/27210804 I don't see anywhere on that page that shows it has G-Sync (or what refresh it has for that matter). I asnt trying to call you out or anything. I'm just interest in this laptop and am trying to make sure I know what I'm buying. Unfortunately there are some discrepancies between what the HP product page says and the descriptions shown between online retailers like Amazon and Newegg. If you could provide a screenshot of G-Sync and the refresh rate on that model, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.
@@ecobasetech4558 yes, the page doesn't say anything about refresh rate and G-Sync unlike the page on Amazon. I can't provide you screens hot, because I don't have this laptop anymore. It was a testing unit and I had to send it back. The thing that I am sure tho is that if you buy Omen with 144hz display it will have G-Sync. You can ask the seller on Newegg to confirm that or in the worst case buy the laptop, check it yourself and if it's not what you expected return it.
Well, it depends. If you wanna compare it to GTX 1060 Scar 2 then Omen with GTX 1660Ti will me much better of course. However the features and build stay the same unles you're talking about the 2019 model of Omen with all black lid.
i just brought hp omen 15 2 months ago, move on from rog gl503ge and i never regret a bit.. overall far solid build quality than my old rog gl553vd and gl503ge, and the temperature are much cooler on the chasis, i feel cool on my chasis while playing world war z and other games in ultra sett.. my temperature cpu is 72, and gpu 69 while playing heavy games. and during stress test i got 88 cpu and 80 gpu. of course i undervolt to -135 and underwatt to 20/35 watt. 10/10 of this laptops so far. they keyboard and chasis are very comfortable for hand. very highly recommend it for who wants comfortable hands on the keyboard, simplicity, many ports and aesthetic minimalistic looking design. great video btw (y)
Thanks for this mini-customer-review. It's gonna be useful for other people who struggle to choose. So you switched form older generation of Scar (gl503). Which configuration of Omen you've got?
What is the battery configuration that you have during the review? I see omen have models with both 3cell and 6 cell battery. I am asking this since you mentioned 4.5 hrs and 1.5 hrs of battery backup
The omen's comfort mode is actually preferable for gaming than the performance mode because it lowers the cpu temperatures (preventing thermal throttling)
There are various configurations. Basically you can have 60, 120 or 144Hz screen in 17" Omen. Depends what is available in your country and what you found.
You're probably looking for Hero II if you want it with RTX 2060. Check if Scar II is available with this GPU in your country but as I said Scar and Hero are the same laptops.
Hi, I'm planning to buy a gaming laptop this week. My options are HP OMEN 15 With ports at the back (same as the one in the video), i7 9750h, 1660ti, 16gb and Asus ROG STRIX G 17inch same spec. Which is better? Can you tell me the pros and cons of both of them. Thank you in advance!
Strix G has better cooling and you can control the fan speed. Omen has better build quality, webcam, G-Sync and Thunderbolt 3. I think Omen pays off better, but only if you take special care of cooling system. I mean repasting with high-end thermal paste and undervolting.
@@TechFinds does repasting and undervolting reduce the thermals significantly? I heard it runs 95C stock under load. I confirmed there's no GSync on HP Omen. I don't use the webcam on my lap anyway
@@AbyJ001 No, repasting and undervolting doesn't affect the performance. After that your temperatures drop down to 80-86. Omen has few display options, only the 144Hz one has G-Sync. Yoy have probably watched some reviews of Strix G, so now you have to compare them and make some compromises according to your preferences.
To be honest i doubt that even e-sport players are able to spot the difference. However, sometimes you can feel like maybe one display seems smoother that other, but maybe that's only self-suggestion. ;)
Ohh i love this new MSI GE75 Raider. It's very good competitor for Scar 2. MSI also is about to relase the GE65 Raider in Q3 2019 and i am thinking about getting one since it'll be 15". GE75 is 17". I'll just have to test it and see how well it stands against Scar 2. So far the Scar 2 is the best overall laptop that i've tested.
I have hp omen 2018 with i7-9750H and rtx 2060, have you just altered offset voltage to -130mv or you changed any other setting i.e., turbo limits etc.

@@zedmarck2084 To be honest 144Hz 1080p display will be the same good for editing, and way better for gaming. Is it good idea to buy omen without Windows and with 8gb ram(1 channel) and then add 8gb and Windows by myself? Will it cost less? Will it go as good as if I bought omen with 16 gb ram(CAN it be dual channel?) and Windows? (Omen with 2060 rtx)
Ask the seller if the laptop that you wanna buy comes with single or dual channel. I personally would go for a laptop with windows already installed to not bother when I get it. Also would be good to have both the same sticks of RAM.
You do great reviews. Very technical and specific on features but accessible. I have a question for you. I've just bought the HP Omen 15 with RTX 2070 Max Q i7 for £1430 (down from £1800) on Prime Day. I'm really impressed with this and it can link to my 4K monitor too nicely. I'd already fit a HP Omen desktop with i7 8700 & RTX 2700 desktop. If you had to keep one, which would it be? Sadly can't afford to keep both! Thanks!
Well, it's highly depended on your preferences and needs. I would keep laptop ofc since i need a portable device that is very powerful at the same time to work on the go.
I’m planning to buy one of these laptops, which one is better, The HP ce-198wm, Asus GL504GM-DS74 or the Newest Lenovo Y545 GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6? (for video or photoshop editing)
Why not consider the newest Acer Predator Helios 300 with GTX 1660Ti? I mean for photoshop any of those will be good, but with Predator you get better performance and you pay less.

@@fopa4845 You can always ash someone experienced to do it for you. But first it's good to find out if your warranty allows you to open the laptop to upgrade HDD. But if you don't wanna do it anyway i think that Scar 2 is better than Omen.

Scar 3 just came out and look at the price difference. I think many people would go for Scar 2 anyway since in terms of specs it's not vary much better. If it comes to Omen the 2019 model may be interesting. I've seen some pictures of the one with normal keyboard placement and no secondary screen which looks awful and pretty useless imo. If it was at least wide from edge to edge of the Omen you could make more use of it but you'll get only one little rectangle in the middle that is an actual screen. The rest is just a glas/plastic polished black surface.

I hate my OMEN 15 so much. The main reason for this is that the cover is incredibly weak and anything touching it causes damage and now there is a massive scratch across the screen. I would not recommend the omen.
I'd say that the screen in every laptop is a fragile part, so everything can make a scratch. Ideally you should not even touch it unless wiping with a special cloth.

The Omen offers more. HP have done a brilliant job on this model and the build quality is amazing. I'm sticking with Omen from now on
It's a great laptop and it has a lot of useful features but hopefully HP will improve cooling with next generation that is comming out very soon. :)

Which one you suggest for 3d and video editing?
3D video editing is a very demanding kind of work. 6-core CPU will handle this, but may not be super fast. However if you need a portable device for that job I think that Scar will be better as it has better cooling
Tec Finds, I think you have the information about which one has G-Sync backwards. Can you confirm that the Omen is the one with G-Sync and not the Scar 2? I think it might be the other way around.
Scar doesn't support G-Sync (i said in the video). If it comes to Omen the G-Sync is available only with 144hz and 240hz displays. If you find Omen with 60Hz 1080p or 60hz 4K display it will not have G-Sync.
www8.hp.com/us/en/laptops/product-details/product-specifications/27210804
I don't see anywhere on that page that shows it has G-Sync (or what refresh it has for that matter). Thank you.
To clarify, I'm looking at this model from Newegg 15-dc1040nr

Strix G has better cooling and you can control the fan speed. Omen has better build quality, webcam, G-Sync and Thunderbolt 3. I think Omen pays off better, but only if you take special care of cooling system. I mean repasting with high-end thermal paste and undervolting.

It's kind of annoying to make such blog posts but it probably helps to rank the videos and website in Google. However i didn't see any difference and there's probably no way to measure it. I'll do it for a good practice anyway.
@@TechFinds I don't know if you have a family and work full time too like myself but make sure you don't get too stressed and burnt out. I have seen many channels close up because of burn out. I don't know what it's like getting review units in the UK but in the USA it's competitive and as a result channels like mine and Bob Of All Trades we have bought many of our own systems.
@@OWNORDISOWN Yes I work full time so the TH-cam is a side thing for now. Despite it's a lot of work and almost no free time for myself i find developing the channel fun and that's what I love to do. I run the channel for slightly over 1 year now and it's growing relatively slow I guess, but I am very far from burning out. ;) I didn't think about getting review units yet since my channel is so small so I don't know what's the competition in the UK. Thanks for giving me idea, I just realized that many of my videos are pretty high in search results and the channel maybe became noticeable so I can try to apply for some review units.

@Murali Manoj , dude there is no rtx 2060 max q in the hall world market , max q you can find it only with rtx 2070 or 2080, it means the rtx 2060 is not max q at all
I got the omen 15t dc100 with the core i7 9750h and the rtx 2060, with 32gb ram already in it and it has 240 hz, 1080p. This was a huge jump for me (specs wise) and i usually use a desktop, but I brought it for college and its doing super well for me. Idk if i have gsync or not but overall this laptop is awesome.
My desktop had a gtx 970 and a amd fx 8320e and only 16gb ram and i built a couple years ago. It still does well today but my monitor for it was 75hz, after playing some games at 240 and going back to 75 feels weird lol.

I bought a RTX SCAR II but was a hard choice, the omen is beautiful, and thunderbolt 3 but, i saw in specs, the omen had a MAXQ video card, and SCAR II had the full size for laptop RTX2070, and it for me is the point that help me decide for the asus, because the price is the same in Europe.
Good choice. Scar has also better cooling and fan control which is important
If i had to choose between these 2 with RTX2060 card which should I buy...?
I would go for Scar II, because I think it's better overall. But if the price matters Omen is a cheaper option which is not bad too. The price may vary between countries.
@@TechFinds eya it's cheaper in my country as well
what do you think how much will they drop the prices of these laptops during black friday?
We can't predict but at last black friday i've seen many laptops for $400 up to even $700 less. Some of them were on smaller sales like $100 - $300 less but it's still good. I'm personally waiting for this year's black friday to get some laptop myself.
I can’t tell which is better for gaming
I think Scar II. It all comes to better cooling. Beside that Scar has smoother screen anb better sound

I have had the Omen and it's a good laptop, just the problem with the reviews on amazon is because on most of their laptops they advertise 144hz screen but really is a 60hz screen.
However this particular screen with the G - Sync is gorgeous.
Yes, i had 144Hz G-Sync pannel and it was awesome. On Amazon there are 60Hz models, but you can go HP Store directly and choose 144Hz option. However it's kinda expensive to buy it directly from HP.

Hi Tech Finds,
Do you think I need to overclock my HP Omen 15 (i7 8750H @ 2.2Ghz)?
Thanks!
You better don't do it. Omen runns hot on stock settings and overclocking would only make the temperatures higher.
Btw. the CPU is not overclockable in Omen and also most of other laptops. But you can overclock the GPU. However it will generate more heat.
@@TechFinds Thanks! Because one of my rendering software 2.2Ghz is not recommended so i want to increase it to at least 3.0Ghz. But thanks for the information. cheers!

The HP OMEN (2019) DC-1054NR Or MSI GL-75 (i9-9750H GTX 1660Ti Both) (1TB Hard space with 128GB or 256GB SSD only)
I think that Omen will be better for graphics work as it has better display (if we're talking about 144Hz one). MSI GL75 is a budget option for MSI and it usually comes with 60Hz. But if you can find it with 144Hz it should be comparatively good. If it comes to battery i don't know, because i didn't have GL75.

@@bcooper7618 that's not good, you should undervolt it by about -0.130V. Also comfort mode helps to lower the temperatures
It is important to mention for Omen by HP, that G-Sync is available only for models with 144Hz + GTX 1060 or 1070 maxq. RTX models are without G-Sync and they are also a lot more expensive. But you do not really need G sync with that performance. I can't speak for other countries, but for my model dc1003nc
Couple weeks ago I decided for Omem with RTX 2060, because there is no other laptop with better price for that performance.
