    One thing I appreciate about WYB is how dedicated he is to whatever he puts his mind on. He seems to be the type that gives back as much (or even more) energy and dedication as his castmates and crew gives to a project. So if he can keep taking on 'serious' roles instead of idol dramas (which I notice he's been shying away from these days anyway), he's well on his way to be a good actor.

      He learns fast and has a very high comprehension. All of the directors he has worked with in the past have praised him highly. From Wuming->Born to Fly->One and Only->War of Faith, his improvements in acting and line delivery can visibly be seen if you watch them in the sequence that was filmed. Most importantly, he can appear bare-faced in One and Only, and also War of Faith means that he has no idol baggage. This is the biggest blockage for high-traffic idol/artists to become real actors, they want to be beautiful on screen and can't come down to earth to be a real actor.

    After watching this drama, I find that Wang Yibo's acting is more natural and spiritual, and not stylized or stereotypically, which is a common problem for most actors from the traditional acting school. It's a breath of fresh air. He does have a natural talent for acting. The beginning and ending of the drama is a closed loop. The last two episodes were really good and returned to the same quality as the Shanghai part and I would say it's a perfect ending. It gives me the feeling of waking up from a dream, everything returns to the beginning. It was very satisfying but a bit nostalgic and made you want to restart from episode 1 again.

    Wang Yibo's acting switch has been on ever since he acted in Untamed. His roles have been so versatile that he gives me the impression that he is always ready to challenge himself. So saying that he doesn't Enjoy is quite wrong imo. War Of Faith might just be the starting of his great career as an Actor and after back to back hits like Hidden Blade, I'd really like to see his works more and more

    I agree with the comments about the drama's pacing problem as they move away from Shanghai, but it's hard to agree with all the assumptions casually made about Wang Yibo. Especially with comments like his acting wasn't impressive in Wu Ming, but is now because he's holding his own against veteran actors. Like? In Wu Ming he kept up alongside not just veterans but against the GOAT Tony Leung and gave a scene stealing performance which was critically acclaimed. You especially can't say that he went through the motions in a role like Chen Shuo in One and Only for OBVIOUS REASONS. I agree that not all of the scripts that he's chosen so far have given him much to work with, but in the recent years, he has definitely shown his acting chops. His acting is always very natural and delicate.

    Thank you for a very fair review, I agree with everything you said except one thing: Wang Yibo has always been extremely convincing and charismatic in his roles, he has always been able to express the slightest nuanсes, to convey the feelings in such a way that you can't help sympathizing his character. That's the real reason why so many people like him, and nothing else!
    The directors who work with him have always admired his dedication and natural talent. He has said more than once that he is really interested in developing his acting skills - and this can be clearly seen! If he wanted just to get more money, he would play "ancient puppets" in coustume dramas, wouldn't he??? Instead, he takes very challenging roles and makes them unforgettable. How can anyone be surprized by the current success?? It's only natural, as for me, this is exactly what I expected from him.
    Do you know, by the way, that recently he has watched about 100 arthouse movies within a short period of time? Isn't this a sign that he is very seriuos in his intention to become a brilliant actor???

    On the contrary, it's the *Anonymous* that made a great impact on WYB, and this is when he changed drastically.
    One could see how important for him that movie was (judging by BTS, his vulnerabilty during all the roadshows, his public behavior after Anonymous, his close friendship and trust with Chen Er). And of course, the role itself was full of Yi Bo's transformations, both visual and psychological. This is when he really 'tasted the dish'. He loved it. He fell in love with it. This is when his romance with serious cinema unfolded. It was SO obvious.
    As for WOF, it just has become a kind of PART2 of Yi Bo's eager immersion into the character portrayed. WOF simply picked up the banner raised in 'Anonymous'.
    You may have confused, unintentionally or purposefully, "Bo's enjoyment of the role" AND "your personal impressions of his acting" in both films. So, 'Anonymous' didn't impress you. Fine.
    *But telling that only WOF made him love his acting process is total blindness* .

    This reviewer ALWAYS talks about Yibo likes she has something against him. How many of us are brave enough to change career direction under PUBLIC EYES? Yibo is an introvert person, but he dares to venture out from his comfort zone of dancing to sing/dance world, to professional racer, to acting. In few years, Yibo grew strongly and surely against discriminatory eyes (such as this reviewer). There is no one in the Chinese entertainment industry can deliver his excellent voice control, body control, emotional delivery (explosiveness/sincerity/tenderness) to bring his role alive. I also disagreed with this reviewer - Yibo brought his charcters alive in all 3 of his 2023 movies. Lastly, Yibo portrayed his character as naturally as he was breathing and living as the character. Most Chinese actor/actresses tend to overact - perhaps more of the style this reviewer's liking where she can see the "acting". SUPER job Yibo - changing your career direction in a big way that most of us can't even do just once!!!!!!!!! (PS: this reviewer is WRONG and needs to check on her fact - Yibo is not stockholder of the agency he is working for.)

I have been captivated by him since Love Actually (a terrible show, but Yibo makes it worth watching). I also believe he truly loves what he is doing. He has chosen acting as his main career track and surely the money making aspect and longevity of an acting career would have played a role in that decision, but he wouldn't be doing it if he didn't enjoy it. And now that he is more established, he can take on roles that he wants to play and not just what he happened to be cast for. I don't expect him to do any more romance/idol dramas.

      I agree. Yibo is going to try to do his best no matter what path he's on. That's just how he's wired.
      There are "those" commenting how much he's improved as if he was so lacking prior which really annoys me. But really all actors have room for improvement and Yibo will be the first to say it.
      I think AvenueX is giving her unbiased perspective and we can see it differently.
      I really liked yibo's acting in Luoyang but that one seemed to have gotten a lot of criticism. I liked it (his acting) better than LOF which seems to be a fan favorite. Don't get me wrong I liked LOF too.
      But there's no denying Yibo slayed it in War of Faith. It always takes me a bit to not think of the character as the actor. In war of faith I forgot about Yibo from the start. It was just Wei Ruolai who took me on a journey of emotions.

    I'm so happy for Yibo! This is his best role and drama so far! He really did have a quantum leap in acting! I think the changes started after he started to film movies. War of Faith is his drama comeback after venturing into the film industry. I read that the director of Wuming locked him up for a week before filming started for Wuming and because of starring opposite Tony Leung, he felt a lot of pressure and tension. But after filming, the director really liked him and even became a mentor, taking him to lessons from professors at the Beijing Film Academy, giving him homework, and watching many classic movies to analyze films from all angles. Privately, I think he's studying acting through the art of filmmaking, and with a good helper and hard work, progress is inevitable.

    One thing I wish to add, and that is Yibo was filming this drama series during early 2023, after he had completed his road show for Hidden Blade.
    We won’t forget how Yibo was cyber attacked by 黑水军(black fans) during the period when Hidden Blade was screening at the cinemas. They purposely rated the movie one star at Douban, when they didn’t even watch the movie. They passed rumours about him, about his acting, trying to prevent genuine movie goers from watching this movie.
    Yet, all these didn’t prevent Yibo from putting in effort during the filming of the drama War of Faith. Yibo must have a heart of gold, not wanting to deal in negativity, but just stay focused in his work on hand and that’s how professional he is!
    Look at the final product of the drama War of Faith, Yibo has certainly put in a good show, when many movie/film critics have given their good ratings of this drama series.

    Let's not act surprised Wang Yibo is an excellent actor. Wang Yibo has been excellent for a while!! He was nominated for Golden Rooster Awards (China's equivalent of Oscars) for his DEBUT movie for god's sake. He co-lead with TONY LEUNG in Hidden Blade and he managed to shine on his own. How many young actor can pull that off? It's just that so many of you including AvenueX were blinded by prejudice, it's time to update your knowledge about Wang Yibo! 😂 He was only 25 when he act in War of Faith, I think he'll only get even better with time 👍

      She mentioned that she watched Hidden Blade and wasn't particularly impressed. As someone who had watched many movies and dramas, I can see him improving by each projects but that's the point. I can see the flaws in his acting and that's how I saw his improvements. He's still improving and that's good. It shows how hard he worked for the achievements he had right now.

      @@ms.chuisin7727 I too have watched many cdramas and films over the years and felt Yibo's performance was great in Hidden Blade and he was deserving of the nomination. I do however think his acting was elevated even more in war of faith.

      @hanajames440 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@ms.chuisin7727I honestly doubt she actually watched the movie in its entirety. Good acting is a skill that can still be evaluated objectively. It's one thing to not resonate with a performance, another thing to conclude after watching such a great acting that this actor doesn't enjoy acting.
      But then again the fact that Avenuex judges whether an actor is passionate about acting by how much an actor enjoys doing press tour instead of by the quality of their acting, speaks a lot about her as a reviewer 😂

    • @ms.chuisin7727
      @ms.chuisin7727 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hanajames440 I agree that she sometimes was a little over the top with her own personal preference. She wasn't his stan so she doesn't know what caused him looking awkward or "off" during the press con or promotion period and took it as he doesn't enjoy doing it. Well... from any outsiders view, if you look like you don't enjoy it people gonna see it as you are not enjoying it? Do you look at a person looks like they aren't enjoying your company as "Oohhhh....he's so into meeeee.....😚"??? If yes, that's.......crazy....

    • @hanajames440
      @hanajames440 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ms.chuisin7727So many great actors don't enjoy doing promotional activities. Most famously recently is Oscar winner Cillian Murphy. Not because he doesn't enjoy acting itself, but for other reasons. I don't know Cillian Murphy well but if I want to know whether he enjoys acting or not, I would simply judge through his acting performance in his movies.
      The same applies for Wang Yibo. I will watch his works & read his interviews in magazines. His interview for Golden Rooster Award magazine was particularly enlightening about how much he loves acting.

    Your comments are fair and objective. It’s not easy for any movies of that subject matter to pass the Chinese government censorship. To appreciate it as a piece of artwork, you have to filter out the politics. The focus is still on humanity itself. I think each actor and actress did a superb job. The story lines are tightly woven with captivating rhythms. As for Yibo, he truly proved himself in his endeavor!💚💚💚

    I'm so happy you enjoyed it! I loved it so much! So much energy, so much happening, so many characters I really cared about. I agree things dropped away a little in the final phase, and that the pacing could have been better towards the end. I especially felt the section with the neighbour girl Wei Ruolai was teaching was rushed to the detriment of the impact of what was narratively a very important sequence. But these are all minor quibbles, Wang Yibo was excellent, as were Wang Yang, Li Qin and the rest of the cast, and the drama as a whole was a triumph.

    I feel you have some major misunderstanding about Wang Yibo😂 first of all, he is not a major shareholder of YueHua Entertainment, so he is not working for himself and he is not his own boss. Secondly his past acting were true to the characters he played, both Lan Zhan and Baili Hongyi are written as characters with little facial expressions and he still managed to deliver emotions with his eyes. Let's put it this way, if his acting of Lan Zhan truly is that bad, it wouldn't have gotten him so famous and so many fans just from that one character.

The acting has been superb 👏, and I have genuinely loved each of the main characters. The pace is spot on! And while there are lots of bad characters there are no really annoying characters which has been refreshing. The fiancé was such a pleasant surprise!!! This drama made me into researching on the history of the early 30ths realizing that the Song/Sun family and government was so corrupted at the time! I’ve learnt a lot through this drama! Really hope the younger generation can watch this so they know the Chinese history of the past century better!

      I heard this drama was a huge hit in 2021 but I never saw it because of lack of subtitles (now fans translated subs into English on youtube) and actors I've never seen before.
      Would you rate it above the War of Faith? Does it stick the ending?

    He acted like Lan Zhan and then like Baili Hongyi both quiet, cold and stern look characters..people said he only has stern face, he doesn't know acting, and then Yibo acting a different role 😅, his acting switch is activated 😂😂😂...it is funny when people just believe in rumors and in the end just want to look like they know everything. Remember that Wang Yibo was cast for Luoyang before The Untamed, the producer Xu Kang , they chosen him because Yibo personality is exactly like Baili Hongyi and the sames goes to Lan Zhan. But it was not chosen because of his popularity. Haters of some bad fans of other popular actors spread false rumors of his bad acting and people believe it, he being and idol were heard many times of course the directors were happy with him because Yibo did it what they want to. Of course Yibo is learning he is young but it is extreme called him a bad actor, the The Untamed wasn't be so famous if he was a bad one.😊 Both characters are difficult for sure and he did it very well both characters are unforgettable. Yibo is young but he always works hard.

    Yibo has mentioned that he has ambition in acting.
    IMO he has raw talent in acting, but he needs someone to show him the direction, the direction to become a serious professional actor.
    Director Cheng Er is his 伯乐, Yibo is fortunate to get to know Cheng Er, who sees in Yibo the potential (to become a serious good actor) and hence after their collaboration in Hidden Blade, Chen wants to continue to work with Yibo for his next film 人.鱼。
    They went to 乌镇戏剧节together, twice, that was Cheng’s intention and part of his plan to help develop Yibo into a serious good actor.
    They have been watching and studying numerous movies together; a serious teacher and a keen and promising student, that may explain why Yibo seems to 开窍了in his acting; and he is well on his way in becoming a serious good actor.

    I started watching a few episodes mainly for Wang Yang, but have to say I'm also very impressed by Wang Yibo's interpretation of this character. Republican dramas do not attract me as a struggle to reach a society devoted to communism is very idealized but it never ends up achieving the promised nirvana. Some people would say the glory is in the struggle, but I find the reality of that too depressing to invest time in a drama with no 'happy ending'.
