  • Solo Accordion: Conor Connolly plays Memories of East Clare [composed by Damien Connolly] (Reel 0:00) & The Salamanca (Reel 1:43). This clip comes from an episode of the TG4 series Tradfest, recorded in 2018.
    Conor Connolly's music and song is rooted in his home county of Galway. Some of his main accordion influences include Joe Cooley, Charlie Harris, P.J. Conlon and Tony Mac Mahon. His playing is full of heart and soul, with a great understanding and respect for the tradition and the players he learnt from. He is far from one of the best box players in Ireland. He's a nice player but he's not a special player.
      Conor knows how to promote himself and rub shoulders with big name players but as far as pure trad box playing goes he is nowhere near the level of Oliver Diviney, Ademar O'Connor, Nuala Hehir etc
      He is extremely overrated and quite boring and in a session you can barely hear him.
      He plays a lot with Liam O'Brien who is also an extremely boring, overrated concertina player.

    Powerful stuff! I particularly like the first tune... additionally because my Mom's O'Dwyers (maiden name) were from Clare via Kilnamanagh ;-)! His style reminds me a bit of Tony MacMahon... also Richard Dwyer's... but a bit faster ;-)!

      @TradTG4  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting you mention Tony McMahon as Conor lists him as one of his influences in an interview on this channel, he’s definitely a rising star of Irish traditional music.

      @@TradTG4 the fact that he plays with his eyes closed sometimes and gets lost in the emotion of the music - remind me heavily of Tony! I believe there are people who are excellent musicians and play great - but a chosen few - I don't know - they go to a different place while playing - like they are reaching back into the past. Love Tony's version of the Wounded Hussar - since many O'Dwyers served in foreign armies - has a certain meaning for me! Glad to see younger players that are up and coming! Thanks for the response! My mother has 2nd cousins in Ireland (that I discovered through DNA testing - I'll probably discover more since I've taken the ancestry DNA test and that can help link family trees and common ancestors etc)... I wish I grew up going to concerts etc, but I can't just walk to the corner and hear this stuff... so I really enjoy it when I find new music or new musicians! Still it wasn't long ago my ancestors were rebels... so I have some connection - emotionally (and DNA)! My Grandfather O'Dwyer's ancestors married with Scottish Highlanders from Ontario - MacDonald and MacAulays - Gallowglass and Highland/Hebrides Clans and fellow Jacobites! I don't care so much about the religious past - but I am mindful of it and want to remember the ancestors! Cheers!

    It always amazes me how such incredible music can be made by someone pushing buttons on a box with bellows. Seeing the "innerds" in full view like this is rather distracting, even strange. I applaud Connor for his virtuosity and energy.
