'Songs Of The Open Road [Trailer]': A portrait of Irish Traveller Thomas McCarthy | Pavee Culture

Harvest Films, (Dublin), have kindly allowed us to put together a few clips from their film “Songs Of The Open Road”, a portrait of the award-winning Irish Traveller Singer, Thomas McCarthy. In these heart-touching short clips, Thomas remembers growing up on the Irish Travellers site, under the West Way in Ladbroke Grove; and he recalls living on Portobello Road, where his mother raised five children and ran a stall in Portobello Market for 40years! We see Thomas revisiting his old patch and remembering his friends who tragically died in The Grenfell fire disaster and he recalls some of the sounds of his youth, the blind Irish box- player who busked on Portobello and the rhythm and beat of Reggae music, which he still loves to this very day.
“Songs Of The Open Road” will be screened at the ICC on Sat November 18th as part of our PAVEE SONG - PAVEE CULTURE season. Thomas will also do a rare and special Live Concert here at the ICC on Sunday Oct 19th.
Thomas McCarthy, Singer and Irish Traveller Song Collector, was the winner of “The Gradam Ceoil Award 2019”, Ireland’s most prestigious awards for traditional Irish music and song.
