    Just a quick heads up, as the banana tree gets bigger you will need to bend the tree a bit to help the new banana leafs (shoots) have enough room to unfurl. Otherwise the spine of the leaf will break on the greenhouse roof.

    We live in an area now where citrus trees grow outdoors without a problem and we have an orange, grapefruit and lemon tree. We are moving further north where the climate is not hospitable to citrus trees. You have given me hope to be able to grow citrus in our new place! I love your setup and thank you so much for sharing it with us! BTW, I was seriously going to miss our citrus trees the most out of everything where we are living now. Even though I still have to leave our wonderful trees behind, I now feel better that there is a possibility of us continuing to have home grown, pesticide free citrus!

    Thank you for continuing to give updates. In your opinion does the success in winter have more to do with the greenhouse effect or the fresh air being warmed by the earth going through the tubes?

    • @trailbreakfarms
      @trailbreakfarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Winter seems easier than Summer in that temperature is easily managed during Winter and Summer is more difficult to cool and the Greenhouse gets dry because of the Fans constantly running. In my Climate, we get hot during Summer (over 100 several times) and cold during Winter (temperatures can be near 0). That puts a lot of pressure on a Greenhouse. But its working.

    • @trailbreakfarms
      @trailbreakfarms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When Solar is on, costs are $0. Generally costs are about $25 per month otherwise. But if we turn on the back up heater during cold months, it can cost $200/month.

    • @trailbreakfarms
      @trailbreakfarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes I'll do weather updates from time to time. This Greenhouse has a backup heater set to turn on at 48 degrees fahrenheit because I have some sensitive tropicals in there. Otherwise, it would maintain 40 plus. If we get a really cold sub zero night, I'll update. We've had them before and things seem to hold up well.

    Does the air circulate from the inside of the greenhouse in a closed loop through the geothermal pipes, or does the air come in from the outside into the geothermal pipes? Just wondering about fresh air for the plants during winter.

    • @trailbreakfarms

  • @donovanfoto3263

    Banana will have to be hand pollinated, as the pollinators are normally BATS. So unless you get bats in your green house, your only option I know of is hand pollination.

    • @trailbreakfarms
      @trailbreakfarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes I have a back up heater. The Greenhouse will maintain above 40 without it but because I have sensitive tropicals, I want it 48 and above so that's about where it comes on.

    How are the plants pollinated? And when you plant in the soil I’m betting you have to amend it pretty well since you’re below topsoil. Do you simply use compost to fertilize?

    • @trailbreakfarms
      @trailbreakfarms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we open vents in the spring and the bees and other critters seem to find their way inside. we also purchase mason bees from crown bees. Things seem to get pollinated so its working. When planting, we use compost and locally purchased planting soil to help.

  • @czthor1

    What was your cost with the spray foam? Would you buy the kit or build your own design the next time? what would you do different. Add some 55gal black water barrels a water has the best heat sink rating of 65 compared to all other materials.

    • @trailbreakfarms
      @trailbreakfarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I paid $1800 for the spray foam and paint cover. Next time I would probably do my own design based on what I've learned from this one. I've tried using heat barrels. Its a good idea.

    • @cinchitup42
      @cinchitup42 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@trailbreakfarms I used galvanized metal with rock wool insulation behind it on the North wall and along the bottom of the South wall. The galvanized metal reflects the light in winter. I am super happy with this as I didn’t want to mess with spray foam and paint. Snow peas, arugula, Napa cabbage, daikon radishes and winter lettuce mix are thriving in the North bed even with -24 temps a few times this winter. I use a single burner propane heater attached to a small propane tank on the way below zero nights but am considering running a propane line and installing a propane heater this year.

    • @trailbreakfarms
      @trailbreakfarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. The Geo Thermal is used for heating and cooling. To be fair, I use additional fans during summer and have a back up heater for winter when it gets really cold because Geothermal will keep it above 40 but I want it above 48 (degrees fahrenheit)

    • @trailbreakfarms

      Yes I still push/pull air from the shop depending on temperature. I think a Greenhouse was meant to be a complement to another structure like a home or shop to balance heating/cooling needs of both.

Are you seeing the same? Any tips for condensation? It got down to 10 deg F a few nights ago. In the morning it was 42 inside. I was pleased with that. From time to time, they go dormant, just cut the water by 50% and give them some rest. I knew people who had figs outside in northern Jersey. They were 20 feet tall and had to be wrapped every year. The people would take the leaves and wrap the entire tree for insulation. It appears to have worked.
