My Dad was a civil engineer at SCE&G and he used to tell us that someone recalculated the 1000 year flood level for the area and it was about a foot over the top of the original dam. As a quick fix, they drove a steel cofferdam into the top between the original road and the water about 2 feet higher. I think some of it is still visible on the Irmo side around the park.

I worked on this project from 2004 until its completion in 2005.
