    You can't really gloss over Gideon's manipulation of Scott's memories though. While Scott was still toxic in his past, Gideon was so threatened by him that his narcissistic behavior drove him to manipulate Scott's memories to make him even more toxic.

    I love stories about toxic men unknowingly being hurtful, especially if they grow by the end. 500 Days of Summer is in the same vain.

    • @MichaeltheComicNerd
      @MichaeltheComicNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Indeed! It's nice when these stories make the character realize they're consequences for acting that way. Hopefully it leads to growth, it's just sad that's not always the case. I think it's debatable if the main character from 500 Days of Summer actually learns to work through his own toxicity though.

    now I really want a Scott Pilgrim movie with the same message as the comics

    • @MichaeltheComicNerd
      @MichaeltheComicNerd  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I still think the movie largely has the same message, but it’s nowhere near as explicit or critical of Scott

    • @fbi9009
      @fbi9009 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MichaeltheComicNerd Maybe I am just stupid, or the toxic personality mentioned, but on my first watch through I completely missed the point, and actually sympathized with Scott. Granted I though he and knives was very weird, but only because of her age, believing he wasn't taking advantage of her innocence. As well as, while Scott cheating on each of them did urk me slightly it was only slight. Finally, upon talking to people and rewatching the movie multiple times; I cringe that on my first watch through I felt Ramona overreacted to Scott's comment after the fight with Roxanne Richter, asking Ramona whether there was anyone at the party she hadn't hooked up with. So in my opinion I think my clearly problematic perspective originated from how Scott was portrayed. Partially from movie main character bias and partially from Scott's somewhat relatable demeanor within the movie, as this seemingly harmless, slightly witty, awkward 'kid'.

    • @MichaeltheComicNerd
      @MichaeltheComicNerd  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I can definitely see that. And I do agree the movie is definitely more lenient on Scott than the book is (that's the concept for which this entire video is based on), but I do think narratively, you are not supposed to find Scott's behavior okay, it just doesn't go far enough to make that intention more obvious and some people walked away with the wrong idea. You could also make the argument that part of that is getting older and recognizing how bad this behavior is than when you were first exposed to it when you were younger. I'll admit that I read the book as a young teenager and took me longer than I want to admit to get what it was really saying.

    • @fbi9009
      @fbi9009 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MichaeltheComicNerd I didn't really think about it that way. I just sort of assumed my initial impression was at the fault of the movie not doing enough to display its message. I never really stopped to consider whether it was my own fault that I had not matured enough to fully appreciate what it was saying without it literally being displayed in bold.

    • @MichaeltheComicNerd
      @MichaeltheComicNerd  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't say it's "your fault," as that feels like unnecessarily punishing language for not knowing then what you know now. It's just part of growing up, you know? If you recognize these elements now, it just means you've grown as a person, even if it's not as fast as we may wish it was. Most people still woefully miss the point so the fact that you have the maturity to recognize it now is a sign of maturity worth celebrating.

    the self-respect sword works pretty well in my opinion, at least in the movie
    and it is very possoble to interpret scotts issues as a lack of self-respect.
    respect is not just mindless worshipping of someone, it is reckognition of that someone. think about how you respect other people. their rights, their emotions, their strenghts and, their flaws.
    i relate and enjoy the videogame use if self-respect as a power, so i might be bias. but it really takes respecting yourself truly to know that you can fight for a better version of yourself. this isnt just "doing something for a immature superficial desire stemming from emptiness and loneliness" anymore, its fighting for what you really, actually care about.
    i get what the sword of understanding means and why it works. however it just looks like a big knife and its meaning is more vague. the sword of self-respect is a flaming katana that means taking accountability for your actions and knowing you can grow and move foward to be better.
    just like when people say "have some self-respect" in response to someone doing something unhealthy.
    thats just my opinion tho
    good vid

    Watched earlier this week and I feel bad for not commenting sooner but in a way I feel this is a great follow up to your Thanos video in discussing toxicity in love, unrequited or actually in a relationship. This video has enforced my belief in the comic being better than the movie. Not say the movie is bad (far from it it’s pretty good) as Wright’s clear love for the source material and ascetics elevate it. But the comics definitely had more time to discuss Scott’s problematic tendencies and his strive to improve himself. The movie definitely acknowledges he’s a POS but because of the 2 hour runtime you can tell they had to solve things very quickly. Always love watching your editorials Michael; always filled with passion and love for the comics while providing a real pathos to it all.

      Always appreciate your thoughtful comments, Snapper! But never feel like you need to comment if you’re not up for it. Just speak when you’d like to and it will be appreciated.
      And good catch on the Thanos bit! This video was actually conceptualized as a spiritual follow up. Although, tonally, they ended up very different.

    Sometimes I reflect back on when I was a teenager and think to myself that I'm grateful that I never got into any realtionships. I just don't think I had the emotional maturity then to handle it. I mean I'd say I was kind of mature for my age. Being a more in my own head and self aware type of person. But having those things doesn't automatically make me awesome at realtionships or a master of social interactions. I'm just able to reflect more. And so yea I stayed away from realtionships. But it wasn't exactly easy and I did accidentally hurt some girls that did like me. And while that's unfortunate all I can really do is be better. I just didn't know what the fuck I was doing. And it's not like I led anyone on or even took advantage of anyone. In fact I point blank turned an offer like that down. Girl wanted me so bad she was cool with just being a booty call. I said nah. I thought she deserved someone who could like her back the same way. So at the very least I'm not a scott pilgrim-esque dirtbag. But I'm not exactly clean. I could've handled some situations better is all. But that's growing up. You fumble and make mistakes and sometimes peeps get hurt. All I can do is improve.
    I'm worried about that right now too. Old friend that basically just ghosted is kind of back in my life because of circumstances relating to our shared friendships but I'm nervous about how to approach it. The person just distanced themselves suddenly and that's fine. I mean it's sad a friendship ended but I'm past that grief. Now that they are kinda floating close again I just feel like I'm being suffocated. Because the person just didn't talk to me about what was wrong. So I don't really know what I did wrong if I even did do anything wrong. It could be a misunderstanding or something else entirely. But I just don't know and can't even really guess. And even if it was something wrong well I'm basically past the point of apologizing since it's been many years now. About 6. So I'm different. I've tried to improve my mind, body, and soul. I've studied philosophy I workout, I do boxing and I try to maintain helathy realtionships with my friends and I'm in a good career field where I live comfortably. So I'm just vibing and winning you know? But this person just brings that old anxiety back from when I was a kid. And I know I'm doing better and I only plan on improving. Everyday I'm a better man than the day before. Bit by bit. Qnd I do my best to make sure I'm respectful and more toned down around them since I'm not sure what exactly will make them upset. It's stressful af. I just don't really know what to do about it and I don't exactly feel like it'd be safe or a good idea to confront them on this. If it must happen it'd be better if they did it, I think. I'd rather not cause issues for anyone but just doing my best is all I can do.

    The ironic thing is the main reason why people love this series is because of the character development of horrible people which is much more realistically relatable than most are willing to admit.
