Some of us are poor and use a hardtail... actually... many of us are poor and use a hardtail. You do awesome videos! Pease release more hardtail specific info! :)
neah,we're too poor to deserve that:)....but actually they really should....over the past year i have evolved to do stuff on my low spec hardtail that some can't do,or don't have the skills with a more expensive full suspension....shimano alivio drivetrain,m445 shimano hydraulic brakes 160mm rotors, xcm sr suntour fork 120 mm and of course 26 inch wheels.....and it is very much ridable and enjoyable even though it can't compare to what these guys are riding.
I used to know a guy who rode DH in the early 2000s and his bike had over 300mm travel on the fork and over 200mm on the rear shock. Just a massive beast of a bike. Weighed in around 22kg I think. He had a “Xc” bike that he’d ride uphill that still had a dual crown fork and probably weighed in at 18kg at least. He could keep up with other guys riding 12kg hard tail bikes on climbs. I don’t think he was human.
I have a full suspension, air on the front, coil on the back. With the adjustments I made, the bike price is around $1000. So it's not impossible you but can't expect to have top-notch components everywhere, but honestly, for the casual biker, you don't need them. I have a Rockshox Recon RL and Shimano Alivio 2x9 full set and a cheap coil rear shock and that's more than enough for my rides with my buddies. Maybe I'll change the shock for a better one in the future, but still I would expect it to be around $1200, which is still affordable imo.
Fantastic channel so far guys, really interesting stuff. I have recently purchased a new bike and would really like to keep it in good condition. Could you guys do a video on a method to keep it in check? Including, but not limited to: Washing the bike (Frame, chain, gears etc with product recommendations) Lubing it up (What liquids and where they go; lube, grease etc) Bearings (How important it is to check, how often and how to check them) Overall tips to keep your bike looking smart every day of the week. How to check and clean forks and stuff like that. I know it's a lot, but it is really hard to find a good video with a good routine to follow. Cleaning and lubing is pretty obvious, but what if I miss something and I find a year later that something has seized? Would be nice to have some suggestions. Keep it up :) Cheers
A few words on how forks work(rebound, coil, air or oil and low/high-speed compression) would have been really nice addition... Keep up the videos Global Mountain Bike Network
Hello there, I have asked this question many times now I hope I will get my answer. Is there any special name for the type of forks where the forks go high to the handlebars?? Like the "Fox 40 Float". Is there a special name for those forks, they look awesome, are they just a high end forks with more travel ??
I swapped the suntour coils on my hardtail for some old rock shox pilots I had hanging around and its surprising how the reduced weight has completely changed the feel of the bike! I used to use it just for trail riding and to get to work but now its an ace little jump bike and general thrashing about,
Steerer tubes come in four materials: Steel (which is an alloy) Aluminium alloy (which is an alloy) Carbon composite (not just carbon, that's an element) Titanium (which is, you guessed it, an alloy) Steerer tubes do not have a "fashionable" size. You might try using the term "popular" a bit more often. Suspension forks do not have a chassis, they are an assembly. And not a single mention of what they are supposed to do. Can you get Smiffy to write you a bunch of short episodes taking viewers through the function basics? You can stick any muppet in front of camera to read out what he writes.
Have an older 26" wheel size trek 4300. Rebuilding it as a 27.5 training bike. Want to use a 80--100mm fork with a 15 mm axle and a straight steerer. Not having a lot of luck. Can get a fork with a straight steerer but with 9mm drop outs only. 1.5 tapers have taken over!
I have rock shocks and I have the same problem. They're all dirty and their getting stiffer and stiffer and I don't know what to do about it. Wow Global, you sure are rude. Isn't this channel supposed to be about helping people who don't know?
Hi, Very good explanation thank you. I'm trying to find a video comparing Fox and Rock Shox forks to find out which one is better for an All mountain bike. Could you help me with that? Thanks
Christian Mateo Christian, Thats a cool idea, Yeah we can definitely do a edit. Im not sure there are many advantages unless you ride purely on the road. Thanks for your comment, Marc
First, let me say that your channel is awesome for great tips. Question, if given the choice between upgrading a dampener, which takes priority compression or rebound?
Hi Guys, when will you make a video on rear shocks? and if possible to show how to replace them and how to choose size for the right frame if u change to a other brand or new one, plus the info mentioned in this video ofc. Thanks in advanced'
Hello GMBN, First off, your channel is great! It actually drove me to purchase a mountain bike versus a road bike. I currently ride a rockshox sektor solo air 140mm travel (27.5 tyre) fork and was wondering if upgrading to the 2016 Fox 36 with 170mm travel was a good idea? Do frames restrict fork travel? I have the Kona precept dl 2015. Thanks
matching my tire size to my fork is the only thing i need to know? going to rebuild (1st time) my 20 yr old mtb....its a Pacific Y-Frame and everything is going except the frame so keeping it under 600 dollars is goal 1...MY MAIN QUESTION...is the fork, my bike has that GERERIC MTB handle bar...does any 26" mtb fork fit right in?
If I put 27.5 rims on my 29er can I increase my travel on my front suspension, by which I mean I buy a new fork. Not sure because I don't want to put too much stress on my frame. Bike is a Trek fuel ex 5, current suspension is 120mm.
Thank you very much. I've been ordering a new front fork off Amazon and am now fully confident that what I get will fit. You can always return Amazon stuff, but..I'd rather get it right the first time. So Double Shoulder Control MTB Downhill Suspension Pneumatic Straight Tube Ultralight Aluminum Alloy Shock Absorber Rebound Adjustment from a mysterious Chinese company that also makes wheel clamps and lumbar support corsets it is. What could possibly go wrong....
When searching for a suspension for a new build, does it just come down to what you will use the bike for, or are there compatibility issues with each frame that demand a certain type of fork suspension? Also a list of places you can get a good selection of parts? Thanks Anyone
Thank you, very informative! Just shelled out for some 2nd hand Fox Floats (26", QR, 1 1/8") for a new build I just started. The guy posted them with all the air let out, I removed the cap & it looks like a standard schrader valve in there. Do I need a specific fork pump or can I do it with any other pump which I can fit onto the valve? Cheers!
what are budget forks like in the range of £40-50 (suntour?)? I need one for my RWD ebike (that's mostly for road use). are they pretty relliable for road use? I'm probably going to take the mtb tyres off too and put something on that's better for cornering on tarmac, has low rolling resistance and has good puncture protection.
I have a problem, my full suspension gets kind of sore after like a few good runs, what kind of lubrication should I be putting on the joints? I have a Fox Float Arms and Fox Rear Leg Suspension...btw my frame is full rigid lol
what suspension do u recommend for me i got a 2014 trek 3700 3 series i want air suspension and good suspension for stunts and tricks and for trail riding. But nothing extreme expensive something like up to 120$
Hi GMBN, i really love your review and discussion but can you explain some cons and pros by using a single vs dual position air fork? if you already have a video please send me the link. thank you.
i have suntour xc shocks on my 29er, they have a little yellow sticker saying not to ride downhill, trial or do dirt jumping. is that just to cover their ass because it is a XC bike or will the shocks break if i done some small jumps and hops on a downhill section of a trail? i do weigh more than the average rider as i got the bike to get back in shape, so is their a front fork you would recommend i replace it with? for now i mostly do flat ground riding but i am wanting to get into more undulating and higher skilled tracks as my confidence returns. i am not sure what steerer i have but i think it is the old one, defiantly not tapered though.

I have a bike with a coil fork and the coil broke is their any way of fixing it or putting new coils in because this happened before Ind I void my worrinty so can I fix it or do I need to spend lots of money on a new fork please I must know
why cant anyone explain how to adjust the fork tension with the right (lookout) and left (preload) knobs or how to maintain them? It's become so hard to find a video with my question. I'm completely new to how to use a fork. Never had a bicycle with front fork. Left knob turns but right (lookout) one doesnt what does it mean. Also, left one makes a click sound when turning all the way clockwise. When should I stop turning it? What does it mean?

you may say you're poor because you have a hard tail but I have a duel suspension and it was probably around half the price of you're hardtail
What bike is it?
I'm poor, but I saved money to buy a FS. Hard tails are not for poor people, are for specific types of usage.
True story! I saved up and just bought a used FS on Craigslist.... best $$$ spent in a while!
Can you guys review some coil forks and entry air sprung forks? It would really help some riders who are looking for a budget fork.
A similar piece about rear shocks would be appreciated.
No mention of coil or air springs, 9mm thru axles or even lock out and dual position forks?

I have a mtb with 120 mm travel and I'm not sure about putting a fork with 140mm travel. Anyone have recommendations?
