I understand fully. I studied at the Royal Schools of Music in London, the London College of Music and the Lancashire School of Music. My study was focused more on Theory than practice although I play the pianoforte and Pipe Organ. Music is no that difficult to learn. One needs patience. I started when I was 7 years old. it is important the one has the Gift of Music. NBot everybody has this Gift. I believe that God gives this Gift for a purpose. For the last 55 years I played in three major churches here in Malta (Europe). To be a musician takes about seven years depending on your instrument. Keyboard instruments are the most difficult.
Thank You This Made A Whole Lot Of Sense To Me. Before I Was Swimming With No Explanation Of How To Georgian Chant But Expected To Perform.God Bless.🙏🏻🕯️🧿
in orthodox chant we have a musical ladder of 8 (voices) notes. ni,pa,vu,ga,di,ke,zo,ni just like do,re,mi,fa,sol,la,si (base is ni, a,b,c,d,e,f,g and ni ending) you must have noticed the similarities God bless keep on the good work. Love from Thessaloniki from the Church of All Saints
In Indonesia, we use numbers for music sheet. We are familiar with this type of tonic So on the top of the page, we write 1 = D, that means the tonic is D and we write " 1 2 3 4 5...but we sing (solfege) : do re me fa sol.
Thank you for this video! My son is 16 years old and a sophomore at a Catholic high school here in Virginia. If you go to his TH-cam channel 'Mr. Roy Wulf', you can see a video of a presentation he did a week ago about his love for Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony.
May you please make a video on the eight tones of the ordinary chants of the office? And one explaining how to chant each of the sections of the of each hour (versicles, absolutions and blessings, lessons, etc.), or please direct me to further resources?
I am really pleased to find this. I do have trouble with eccliastical pronunciation, since I learned classical Latin at school. I'm going to check out all your other videos now! God bless.
This is a real mitzvah you‘re doing us here. Love it. Thanks again. And since nobody asked… I like to run through the Gloria Patri of the same mode as the chant I want to learn. Puts my brain, ear, and throat on the same page.I find it especially true of deciphering Introits.
Good advice about the tools you use, but what I REALLY need to know is reading the written forms. I'm a cantor at my church and I've had to pull a piece of music out to sight read (I hate it when that happens!) & it will be a chant written with the different characters. Some I have figured out just by listening, but I get hung up at times - especially when trying to read it for the first time or two & not being familiar with the melody. Any tips??
Yes! This playlist of videos should help. th-cam.com/play/PLbx845Z_7rp47YxETaoozn6DsD84BsCap.html If you still have questions, lmk, and I’d be happy to help more. 🙏🙂 God Bless
Thanks for the video, even from a musical background trying to make sense of how to read this was a little confusing at first. You explained it very well. 😊
This is not what the title says it will be: how to learn and sing Gregorian chants. Instead, it consists of the speaker telling us at the beginning and the end of the video that the information is exciting and asking us to like the video. Between those pleas is four or five minutes of what the speaker describes as "tips and tricks." Again, that's not what the title says.
Hello! Who know links of videolesson of making gregorian SOUND VOICE, give me please) i mean tutorial lesson, how i must make my lips, neck and miuth for making VOICE (SOUND) in gregorian style
I tried destroying the like and subscribe buttons as you said man. I just couldn't. How will I do that? Won't I get sued by TH-cam and Google after doing so? Thanks for this video. Please create more.
Where in the Liber Usualis (or elsewhere) do you find the tones/chants that corresponds to the text in the Breviary? I have the Roman Breviary and the Liber Usualis but I don’t know how to put the two together in order to properly chant the words of the Breviary for any given ferial day, feast day or canonical hour.
I can pronounce words but I'd like to be able to interpret the meanings outside of what lyrics I can find. Other people's interpretations are, sometimes, more difficult to remember. Can you recommend a translation dictionary?
Ya, but how do we learn Gregorian Chant? Wasn’t that the essence of the title? This should title ‘How to find your key for Gregorian chant. Or, How to stay in key etc.’
Learn solfège, then learn to recognize each note as “do re mi fa…” then sing each note as you recognize it (when you see a fa note, sing fa). Then. Go from there
Let's go back to the time before there were no pianos, and chant with voice only, no instruments. Piano or even Organ...is quite distracting....just my opinion. Why? Musicians all too often play piano or organ too loud, drowning the Chanting/singing.
That's why pope St. Pius X in one of his motu proprios defined that the only instrument used in liturgy must be the organ and even so: secondary to the chant, never overcoming it.
This was completely useless video for someone who can read sheet music ☹️ But I kept “like” for you, since this video can be useful for others. You should warn people at the beginning so they don’t waste time.

I have no idea what you just said. But I watched the whole thing anyway. Now I wish I had taken music in elementary school.

Yes! That’s a great way! I wish I included it ... Thanks for sharing this Yohanes
Solfege is pretty adaptable
The Do in C major scale is C
The Do in D major scale is D ... you just got to know if the song modulates
Yes 👍

Gregorian are inherently in lower notes. But by all means, please consult with your local lead church musical before you proceed
Great explanation!

This is excellent!! Such a great explanation Thank you so much! :)
Thank you! 😁
I got nothing of this, you could have demonstrated with an example at least.
I tried destroying the like and subscribe buttons as you said man. I just couldn't. How will I do that? Won't I get sued by TH-cam and Google after doing so?
Thanks for this video. Please create more.
Hahaha 🤣 Thank you Jess! Will do!
Is there a way to buy the sheet music for the Gregorian chant rosary that you do?
I have them in a Liber Usualis but also they are online by image searching Ave Maria Gregorian chant or Apostles Creed Gregorian chant
@@JohnShaw I am sorry, I could not find it. Will you please type in the link?
You mentioned that we should like the video, but you forgot to say to leave a comment. This is my Al Gore Rhythm comment at the start of the video.
Just started a new gig at a church that does chants and I am so glad for this
Can you make Asperge Me of Gregorian Chant or Kyrie Eleison In piano , you will be the first to do It ! I searched but I found anything.... please ?
I will put this on my list to do👍😁 getting married in a few weeks. If you don’t see it soon just keep reminding me please

Please refer to page 112 in your Liber Usualis
But when looking at the text of the Breviary how can one determine which tone to use to chant it?
How do I get my kids to learn this? They already take piano lessons... so there is some music knowledge.. but I am not sure how to move them forward.
I have found the best way for any age is by doing! Maybe a repeat after me approach with a simple chant.

So what note did Johnny Cash sing in?
Some really low note
@@JohnShaw I can sing Johnny Cash, I can't sing hymn lady tunes, RoR
I can pronounce words but I'd like to be able to interpret the meanings outside of what lyrics I can find. Other people's interpretations are, sometimes, more difficult to remember. Can you recommend a translation dictionary?
This might help! Or something similar. amzn.to/39nqfxT

I absolutely annihilated the like button. Might need to call TH-cam to fix it.
