    Roddy McDowall played Cornelius in the original film and Escape (another actor stepping in for Beneath), he then played Caesar in Conquest and Battle. He also played Galen in the 1974 live action series.

    This is the original 1972 theatrical release. The newer uncut version runs a little bit longer, has more violence, and an entirely different ending. A very good sequel👍🏻

    This was intended to be an allegory for the racial unrest an race riots in America during the 60s and early 70s.
    I liked this film but it’s not great. In general I felt that from Escape onwards they series got less believable, but picked up for Battle.
    The first film had a massive budget and many other films were postponed because all the best makeup artists were unavailable as they were working on Apes. But as the series went on the budgets lessened. The ape masks were more hurriedly made and app,ied so the movement wasn’t as good. The way they were shot also suffered, with the film for Escape and Battle looking a lot less cinematic and far more like some of the filmed TV series of that era.
    The Tim Burton version is slammed by many but I think it’s a good film. Very, very different though, and has much more in common with Pierre Boule’s book ( I won’t say in what ways as “spoilers”). It has a good cast and some brilliant practical costumes ( the more recent reboot is reliant on CGI/ motion capture). It’s worth a punt, but just don’t expect it to be the same.
    The latest reboot, starting with Rise, is an exceptionally good series with a more sensible origin story. There is a new one coming out soon, although Disney now have their hands on the franchise so it’s hard to tell if it will be any good or not.

    There's a Behind the Scenes book on the making of the original POTA series and one of the photographs reproduced in the book shows a scene with Caesar and MacDonald, with Macdonald in shackles before the ending was recut and the new voice over added. That's why Macdonald, like Caesar, is seen only in close up.

    Roddy McDowall played Cornelius/Caesar in most of the films with the exception of Beneath the Planet of the Apes. I do remember that he played Galen in the TV series that lasted for 13 or 14 episodes. Roddy McDowall was a child actor. I know that he starred in a Lassie film and some Disney films (Bed knobs and Broomsticks, That Darn Cat). I did enjoy the tv series that he starred in the 70s, The Fantastic Journey, again another short lived TV series.

    I feel Americans love 3 and 4 so much as they feel quite conventional, safely setting fantasy elements within a relatively conventional modern world. The villain is quite stereotypical in this.
    The films are ok but also somewhat predictable compared to the more fantasy orientated ones.

    Nice reaction. You are one of only two people I've found doing a reaction to this movie. Most others don't seem to stick with the old films and move on to the new ones. Rise, of the new films, is a different take on the apes taking over. It does have quite a bit of animal cruelty though so not sure you'd want to watch that one. The apes do RISE of course but you do have to get through that part as well.

About a Special Ed Teacher named Ralph Hinkley and an FBI Agent Bill Maxwell, who get kidnapped by aliens, then a dead guy comes out of the space ship and gives Ralph a suit with unearthly powers that only he can wear which comes with an instruction book but he loses it and he has to learn about the powers as they go along.

    Caesar was named Milo last time, and they never give a reason why his name has already been changed. But it has already been shown that continuity wasn’t the biggest priority for these movies
    Some humans might be on edge about apes taking over, like Breck, but as Armando re-explained, they were just made into the new pets and then into servants when they realized they could be servants
    The city filming location was Century City in Los Angeles
    Originally this ended with Breck being beaten to death, though not explicitly on screen. It was considered too much after a preview screening so they added in Lisa speaking and Caesar choosing to spare him, but they didn’t have the budget to film new scenes so they just reused footage and close ups with new audio from Roddy McDowell. They actually released an unrated cut on the blu ray with more blood and the original ending, but the next movie follows the less severe ending.
    Wow, _this_ you consider the weakest? For most it’s a toss up between Beneath and Battle. Curious to see how you’ll feel about Battle.
    I thought it was pretty clear Caesar was the one to start rallying the apes
    Yes, Roddy played both Caesar and Cornelius.
    This is my favorite of the sequels

      I always assumed the name-change was to disguise his true identity.
      What’s more of an issue for me is that in Escape It was explained by Cornelius that the first talking ape, who said ‘no’ to his human masters was called Aldo.

      @@GrilloTheFlightless that’s my reasoning too, but they never say so
      That might’ve been the history prior to the time travel changes. I’m pretty sure the pet plague and advancing intelligence of the apes happened a lot faster also. Or history was rewritten to make Aldo the first. Or refer back to continuity not being a priority 😓

    Unfortunately, you watched the theatrical cut of "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes." There are numerous small edits but the most significant change is to the ending. Rather than the "Feel Good" ending we got in the theatrical (lol), the extended version has an ending that is a bit darker. And you should DEFINITELY seek out the extended version of "Battle For the Planet of the Apes." It features a whopping extra ten minutes. In these ten minutes are some crucial scenes that really elevate the film and help to bring the story full circle.

  • @alsyville

    Conquest is my second favourite after the first one 😊 Guess because it flips the scenario. Look how apes treated humans in the first film. And even as a modern civilization look at how we treat donkeys as working animals in some countries, overloaded and abused, then neglected when they are no longer physically able. So us using apes as slaves isn't that far fetched. It breaks my heart seeing the torture scenes. As for the 2001 version, that's a remake not a continuation, and my least favourite. I'd say follow Battle with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", a prequel to the franchise. 😊

    Someone below said that the film was meant to mirror slavery and the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, which had peaked a few years before this came out, but that's the first I've heard of that. What I can add is that the film resonated strongly in America's black communities, as there were reports of audiences at black neighborhood theaters (the nation was largely segregated back then---and still is, sadly) standing and cheering when the apes took over, so intentional or not, it struck a nerve. I also wish there had been more with Caesar and Armando. This story should've been two films. The first would be Caesar's life with Armando, trying to fit in----yet remain an individual, and the film would've ended with Armando dying and Caesar angry and preparing to organize his brothers----which would've been the next film.

      From what I remember there's a direct comparison with slavery in the dialogue at some point. It reminds me how people neglect the 'sprang from or own' comment in the first film and are astonished by the end.

    This film had the BIG problem of trying to reboot the origin of The Planet Of The Apes, without the nuclear war, which was tricky, to say the least.
    But we did get another amazing performance from Roddy McDowall.

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It wasn’t really a reboot at all, and a nuclear war still happened - just in between this movie and Battle.

    • @kieronball8962
      @kieronball8962 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely a reboot, as the events from the first two movies now didn't happen.

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kieronball8962 There’s nothing at all to say they didnt happen. Thousands of years passed between the events of Conquest and the original movie. That’s plenty of time for humans to have a nuclear war, which wouldn’t be hampered at all by the relatively minor uprising g we see in Conquest. Indeed, the war happened by the time we get to Battle. Plenty of time for the human race to evolve into a race of primitive mutes, plenty of time for ape society to develop and plenty of time for the Apes to forget the true origins of their society and create a mythical explanation - just like humans have now. There is no reason why the events of Conquest or Battle would prevent the events of the original two films from ever happening. No reason to suppose Conquest to be a reboot.
      Paul Dehn, the writer, stated "I fitted it together so that it fitted in with the beginning of 'Apes 1', so that the wheel had come full circle and one could stop there quite happily, I think.". He also said “The whole thing has become a very logical development in the form of a circle. I have a complete chronology of the time circle mapped out, and when I start a new script, I check every supposition I make against this chart to see of it is correct to use it"
      Of course there some matters that do t add up, but they are just a result of sloppy continuity. The writers of Battle retrospectively interpreted the whole thing as being a creation of a separate timeline, but since this isn’t mentioned in the films, and is clearly against Dehn’s intentions as writer of the first 4 films, I don’t give it much credence.
