I was a yearling (sophomore) at West Point. Coldest that I have ever been at a football game, probably because we were in uniforms and not proper winter clothing. Dress hats with nothing over the ears. Thin leather gloves. Low quarter leather shoes with thin socks. Wind chill was below zero by the 4th quarter, and there was swirling snow. Nothing better than rushing the field and tearing down wooden goal posts!
I was a firstie and a Rabble Rouser. My classmate, Bill Houtz, who played A-Man, found that his gloves were missing after changing into the A-Man outfit. So, throughout the evening, we took turns passing my gloves back and forth between us. Man, were my hands cold! My parents, in the stands, got so cold they decided to leave at halftime. But, when they got out to their car, they realized that they had sleeping bags in the trunk. They returned to the stadium and sat in the sleeping bags for the second half. And, yes, tearing down the goalposts was a moment to remember! Hope you got a piece of the goalpost as I did.
This was the only Army Navy game I ever attended. I was 9. I have never been as cold in my life as I was that night.
