  • Kariega (Uitenhage) is a town located near the city of Port Elizabeth in Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. In Uitenhage you can still find buildings from the 1800s in their original form. The Old Drostdy Museum built in 1809 is now the home of the Uitenhage Africana Museum. It is the ideal setting through which to experience the history of Uitenhage.
Uitenhage was founded in 1804 so has a rich history demonstrated in a number of old buildings maintained in excellent condition, like the Town Hall, the Drostdy and the Court House. Victorian and Settler architecture add to the town's historical attraction. It is well-known for its Volkswagen factory, which is the biggest car factory on the African continent. The town's name is pronounced "yoo-ten-eyg" by English speakers.
    Activities
The Old Railway Station built in 1875 which is reputed as one of the oldest railway stations in South Africa is another historical attraction found in Uitenhage. Vintage locomotives, a variety of coaches and period furniture and equipment are on display in this museum.
The Cuyler Manor Museum is a living museum that arranges demonstrations of traditional activities like soap and candle-making, baking and weaving.
The Groendal Wilderness Reserve is also situated in Uitenhage. The reserve is the perfect place to go on a hike or have a picnic while listening to the birds singing.
Known as the Garden Town, Uitenhage was first a farming community on the banks of the Swartkops River. Now it is a thriving commercial and industrial town but has managed to keep its picturesque beauty.
It is also just 45 kilometres away from the Addo Elephant Park, so makes a gentle stopover en route from Port Elizabeth, with numerous view stops along the way.

The road from Uitenhage to Rocklands is full of potholes and the squatters huts are alongside the road. Dangerous for travelling. Once clean and beautiful. Sadly no longer.

This used to be the garden town. Its now a derelict town if viewers could see the real Uitenhage and not selected areas for the video,. The old station is not been renovated its falling apart like the so called present station which no longer operates. The Swartkops river was ice a clean safe waterway its now toxic and filled with rubbish. Bloody disgrace what has happened to Uitenhage as with most other towns and cities,

We used to live on a farm at Paardehoek Withoogte back in the 1970's. Those farms cannot be given away now because the township is so close. Stock theft is crazy.

That might be possible, but I also heard that R4 billion was injected into the company for the expansion of another project....
