my father is working on research grant studying the intersection of naming conventions and cultural biases and just for fun I've put one of his thesis into the openai chatbot and showed it to him. The chatbot expanded on this thesis in a frighteningly similar way to what he was writing. This is very scary

haha we got the same dilemma over in the fanfic community bc fanfic is basicallly a huge ass publicly available library that data scrapers take for their writing ai, and if you write in certain fandom terminology in some of those ai prompts, you get text that doesnt scramble the context and timeline, so yeahhhh... but even though fanifc writers actually have some copyright over their work but that doesnt stop the scrapers :/

The creativity ethics issue has existed before AI, and the AI is doing exactly what design students are already taught to do. Design students are taught to design by studying and referencing existing designers’ work. Apparel production lines are all optimized based on existing templates. Every new article of clothing is a derivative of a derivative at this point.
glad you're mentioning the ethics and I'd say as much as for other disciplines: no, there isn't a place for AI in fashion. replacing human creativity by a never-ending flow of products without emotions or stories for the sake of capitalism and meaningless fashion is simply crazy to my ears

I say all this as an artist myself, (and AI terrifies me because of the logical extremes it can be extended to), but I think the idea that machine learning is theft isn't sound on two grounds:
One is that it's bound to be covered, at least legally, by the same rules governing remixes and covers, which I don't think you can argue against, the variations are clear, even if the seed, the 1:1 inspiration is, as well.
The second is that the machine learning mimics how we learn as humans, by taking in other people's efforts, en masse, or by imitating one art style we prefer over another. We keep consuming more and more of what we'd like to imitate, and then the more we expand, the less like anything else it becomes. That is basically the point of machine learning scrubbing the entire internet.
Even if your ethical question is whether or not you should be allowed to monitise it, you already are, you can mimick other people's art styles 1:1 for commissions, you can get paid for gigs reading out lines, imitating someone's voice.
Your argument would have to be that it should not be possible for a company to do it, but they AREN'T doing it, they're providing the ability to do it, to the public, who are the ones in control of what mimickry to generate. Honestly, it's a mess.
I do think it would definitely be a nice thing of these companies to include a flag system for artists to opt out of the AI training, but I don't think it's legally, ethically or morally required.
Whether or not you like it, AI will be growing and taking over most of the intellectual jobs including IT, medicine, art, anything that doesn't require a physical aspect.
Machine learning will consume the entirety of recorded human history, and will be like an active internet archive instead of the passive internet we have today, able to call up anything by anyone.
You don't try to compete in encyclopedic knowledge with the entirety of Wikipedia, on the grounds of you being a real person with real in-brain knowledge, right?
We will have to adapt to it, like how we always do, use it as a tool, or as an extension of ourself.

For me the real issue with AI fashion would be the creation of fake and actually unskilled "experts", AI does not and will never understand the complexities of ingenuity and also the emotions of humans and the multilayered nature of human behaviour all it does is spot patterns and combine existing information to form "new" information.

This new developement forces us to think about what creativity is and realize that most artists do their job without it. With the exception of relatively few exploring the unknown boundaries (the avant-garde) the rest are just churning out endless collages of the same pre-existing ideas. At 12:50 in this video, the human made image is just as derivative as the AI one.
I appreciate that the discussion of ethics is being explored, even though sometimes I feel it's dominated by artist (especially professional ones) going through the bargaining stage of grief: we've always viewed art as something almost sacred, something truly human and at the same time divine, but now we see how many painters were not artists, just labourers skilled in using brushes not unlike others skilled in using table-saws and drills.
Plus, whether people like it or not - what you describe as “sacred” and “special” will now be a publicly available tool for hundreds of millions of people who are beyond helpless when it comes to art
Can’t this also be said for AI Art itself tho? Eventually the ideas and motifs it has a going to begin repeating themselves with little to no visible variation. When the entire foundation for you AI program is based on machine learning, humans (and by extension artist) still need to be apart of this progress, in order to create the art and product that’s being “remixed” by the machine. On a fundamental level, AI will never be able to overcome the hurdles we ourselves face when creating concepts, so why should we bother creating a system that limited in its capacity to create meaningful work besides for the obvious capitalistic intent of creating and having more for the sake of infinite gain.
