  • This video is made up of many different Brown Bear videos that I have personally taken in the wilderness of Alaska over the last 2 years. Placed over the top of the bear videos is audio of tips and advice on wilderness bear safety that I have learned over the many years I have wandered Alaska's back country. Also included is advice gained from conversations with other Alaskan outdoorsmen.

    I’ve heard of people playing dead around bears, but I’ve never heard of a bear playing dead around hunters. That’s amazing.

      Please stop with the "Timothy treadwell". There are hundreds of bear experts that spent their lives working with bears that never got hurt by them and Hollywood chooses to make a movie on a mentally deranged out of work actor who got killed attacking a group of starving grizzlies.

    My understanding is that bears that are attacking in self defense will almost always leave when somebody plays dead. However, if the bear is raiding your camp or actively hunting you, it seems that playing dead will generally be interpreted by the bear as offering yourself as a meal, and you will simply be eaten alive. So your best option is to try to scare the bear away with noise or maybe a flare or fight back, if not with a rifle or pepper spray than probably the poll of an axe. This is coming from Stephen Herrero's book on bear attacks.
    That footage is very cool, by the way.

    • @MikeSmith-xg5nw
      @MikeSmith-xg5nw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Never ever play dead with grizzly's, period. They are far too aggressive. With a black bear it's not a great idea to start with, since it's prey instincts will often kick in. You only want to play dead if you've been knocked over.

    • @latorgator23
      @latorgator23 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Arshad Smith with all due respect. I've been taught for black bears to never play dead. Always fight. They will start eating you while you're alive.

    • @MikeSmith-xg5nw
      @MikeSmith-xg5nw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fair enough, that sounds pretty reasonable too. I believe I remember reading that if you're knocked over and already hurt, to just cover your neck and back of year head and plant your stomach into the ground to protect most important organs and areas with most vascularity. And then if they continue to attack, then you just have to use whatever you have.

    • @latorgator23
      @latorgator23 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Arshad Smith it's hard to capture everything in single comment. Agree with protecting yourself if necessary. Good thoughts.

    • @7wildernessSpecialist
      @7wildernessSpecialist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The best defense is avoidance. I usually spot bears from high ground and from that point will make a lot of noise to scare them off if necessary. The times I have come within close range, I used good bear spray has always worked. I occasionally do carry a rifle and bangers but have never had to use the rifle against wildlife and the bangers only a handful of times. Never play dead, always use intelligence as the primary weapon. At least that's what I do.

    A good way to know if a dog will protect you is to find the puppy in a litter that will growl at you. You also want a dog that walks by your side naturally. Intelligent dogs are reserved and observant. I've had a dozen dogs in my life and loved even the dummies, but an intelligent dog is unbelievable.

    Beautiful scenes from Alaska and great footage of the bears, Lonnie. The soothing voice and backing away is helping against many types of animals. They relax and seem to understand that you are no threat to them. On the other hand, if I were to meet a grizzly, I am pretty sure my voice would sound nothing like calm and soothing, lol. Well, you never know what you are capable of before you find yourself in a life threatening situation. Stay safe in bear country, everyone. Thank you for the advice, Lonnie.

    Every spring your video would be great to review, but as usual forgot.... We have grizzly and black bear in our back yard so it's good to keep up to date on bear info. Have had a few encounters, three with grizzlies and one with black bear, all positive outcomes I'm happy to say. A neighbour wasn't as fortunate but am happy to say he lived to tell his story.

    Great video with many useful tips, thank you for sharing. I had a very close encounter with a brown bear in the northern parts of Sweden. I was deep in the forest fishing for brook trout. Sneaking to avoid scaring the fish I accidentaly walks right up (maybe 10-20 meters away) to a large bear eating on a moose carcass. I stop dead in my tracks, not quite believing what I'm seeing, the bear stops eating and just stares at me. I turn away for a second to tell my fishing buddy that we should back off and when I look back the bear is gone. I look around and suddenly I see the bear charging towards me through the bushes. I ran... I ran like I have never run before, and even though the terrain was full of holes where the brook flowed under the ground, fallen trees and stuff everywhere, it was like I was running on an asfalt parking lot with no hinders at all. All my life I've heard that I should never ever run from a bear and that "they (the bears) are more afraid of you than you are of them". But at that moment my instinct to run kicked in and I wasn't even thinking about what I was doing. Hopefully I can keep calm next time it happens and follow your advise.

  • @Captain_MonsterFart
    @Captain_MonsterFart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    I almostwalked smack into a bear while walking along a creek one time. My fight or flight instincts kicked in and I ran before I could even think about what to do, and before the bear saw me. Luckily it didn't come after me. That "run" instinct is really powerful.
    Don't be like me!

    I've had a few incounters with Black Bears in my 57 years of living on our planet , I was 9 years old when my first meeting with a Black Bear took place in Sudbury Ontario Canada. I know now that you do not run , but as a 9 year old I didn't know that running was not the correct thing to do . I think the bear didn't catch me because I was so scared that I pooped my pants and he slipped in my poop and fell , thus giving me time to escape . Lol. Love your videos , thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. As soon as I finish this comment I'm subscribing to your wonderful channel. Thanks again Lonnie. Best regards from Lloyd .

      Micsnutty Wow, sounds like some interesting experiences for sure. The more I am around my fellow man the more disgusted I get with them. Little boys who throw rocks at an injured creature grow up to be "men" that throw rocks at injured creatures as well but they are more sophisticated and subtle about the way they go about it. I'm convinced there are more "rock throwers" out there than otherwise. There is not much to be proud of as a member of the human race. Okay I'm back down from my soap box now. Bears are a very intelligent creatures that deserves respect for not only their power and size but many other reasons as well.

    This is good Lonnie, I am being fed all of your now, older videos. Good stuff, that I haven't seen.
    My only encounter with a black bear, was on an early morning solo walk, at a vacant off season ski resort in Franconia area/Lincoln NH. It was actually a "safe sighting".
    The bear came strolling out of the woods onto the open ski slope and stayed out there awhile, as I observed it from a very safe distance below. None the less, the bears make a regular practice of coming down to the condos, and all the dumpsters are made as bear proof as possible. Of course there is the very famous NH Clarks trading post, which features a black bear circus show, which my family use to go to on summer vacations leaving massachusetts 1960's, to go north for our vacations. My last trip to Clark's was
    In the early 2000's. They had this Russian girl contortionist performing, and I found her performance more interesting than the bears!
    I laughed Lonnie, when you said bears are like humans, some have bad attitudes! That would be me, in this year 2020, when all of humanity is being cornered, trapped, and being forced to develop a bad attitude, with the new world order orchestrated pre planned sham scamdemic! In an interesting flip flop, it would be right to say that the wild's of Alaska, are more tame, than the human habitat locations of the "lower 48"! I will predict bad attitudes will be the new norm from here on out, among the humans!
    Avoid the HUMANS!
    Lonnie, I have heard that those stadium Co2 air horns are effective to drive off bears? Do not know, don't really want to find out! Your beard has transformed over 7 years!
    Mine came off in late spring. Though I grow it back most years as autumn rolls around. Almost totally snowy white now. Errr! "Howdy" to you both and best regards from Southern NH.

    Thanks for telling it straight! I have had several close encounters when way out on my own on extended canoe trips: black bear in the boreal, and griz out on the arctic barrens (tundra). In each case my human voice and authoritative stance turned the bears. One time I had to use bangers to turn a griz that was swimming across a river on a beeline to my camp. Had the shotgun, but did not use it. It’s a fine line between being dominant and loud, or using the calm quite voice and backing away.

    One thing I'd like to ,make abundantly clear, is the notion of getting between a sow and her cubs. That is crystal clear. But what isn't clear, is that you do not have to get between them. All you have to do to be in danger, is to be in proximity to the cubs, especially if a cub squalls. If that happens, that will trigger Mom to switch to defender mode. Pay close attention to everything when you're in the woods!

Had a Husky/Malamute cross that slept under my 4 by 4 when I was out in the bush. He'd happily put the run on them if I said the word. Another one of those dogs that seemed to know exactly what he was doing. I watched him corner a black bear in a concrete sewer pipe at the Nelson City park one time. Scared me to death, but he eventually got tired of it and came running back to me. That was over 40 years ago. I was younger and dumber back then. Once again, my thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm pretty certain that we could likely match story for story over a campfire until sunup. Take care and regards to you and yours.

    My Dad used to get a fish/game magazine that had a bear attack story in every issue.
    Gave me a healthy fear of bears! :)

    Beautiful video thanks Lonnie. Very informative I hunt and camp in black bear country. It's my understanding that more people have been killed by black bears than grizzly and their cousin's. Most likely because not as many people are walking and camping and hunting in there area's and they're more feared and respected. I have just as much respect for a 300 to five hundred plus pound black bear as I do a grizzly.

    like all nature, admire them from a distance, leave them alone, and enjoy what nature has to offer without destroying it.

    Black bear are coming back into Texas a bit . I hunt by Toledo Bend and we’ve seen scat and heard them tearing rotten logs open . Oldest brother watched one trying to push fish into a pocket . He lives in Michigan and is more familiar with them than I am . Cousin has multiple pics of a couple on his game cams in central/ west Texas this year. Always been honey / sugar bear around the Trinity River . Need to set some cameras out with doughnuts and get some pics. No interest in hunting them but would be some great pictures. Thanks for the information.

    I saw a video of s Black Bear that had climbed a tree to escape a brown colored sow. Both appeared to run up. The sow decended and ran-up-again several times.

      In that video the brown bear (a sow), basically ran up the tree 4 or 5 times to continually harass the black bear. It was an amazing video, quite scary actually. by the time the sow went away, most of the branches on that pine tree had been stripped away. Really showed the power of a brown bear.
