    Got a call for a pick-up of a Honda Riding Mower that "wouldn't start".
    Fella said he was cutting grass, heard a clunk, and after that it wouldn't even turn over.
    Was serviced in the fall of the previous year, and it had fresh oil when I checked.
    Brought it home and removed the shroud covering the flywheel, initially I thought maybe the starter gear had engaged and bound up, preventing the flywheel from turning.
    However, that theory was put to rest when I used my USB Endoscope and Android Phone to have a look inside the cylinder.

    Rotating the flywheel should move the piston up and down in the cylinder, and it was clear (with the use of my Endoscope) that the piston was NOT moving.
    This means that the connecting rod is most likely what's broken, preventing the transfer of motion from the Crankshaft, to the Piston.
    Unfortunately, my customer didn't want to spend the money to fix this machine, so we'll end up parting it out to get our money out of it, and whatever is left will go to him.
    This machine is great for parts, considering everything is in great condition, even the mower deck has very little rust on it, and can be sold to someone who has a machine like this with a rotted out deck.

    Nice use of the endoscope to prove the issue to your customer a lot better than sticking a wooden dowel in the cylinder and taking a video of it not moving. By filming this issue and showing your customer i would think it was greatly appreciated and an excellent way to promote your business as fair and honest.

      I have basically that same endoscope. You can buy them on Amazon for 35 bucks. Absolutely fantastic tool for so many things. I work on chainsaws primarily but do some lawn cutting equipment as well. Great video bud

    I bought the exact mower from Craigslist for 300 bucks. He was a nice fellow, even dropped it off for me. Said it needed a battery. Instead, it had a blown rod. I call it a taillight special. I was so embarrassed. But, I took it apart, bought a new rod and fixed it. Many hours of labor, but I learned a ton. I have used it for 3 years. I wish I had that broken one, because I could do the job in half the time now.

      Yes I ended up buying another one and was planning on making 1 good one, but we ended up parting them out and making more money lol

    Kind of sad to see one of these old Hondas in rough shape. I have a Harmony 1011 rear engine 11 horse mower that is a fantastic machine. Also I have a hydrostatic 4514 liquid cooled twin cylinder front engine. That's a work in progress but it is a very fuel-efficient and quiet machine.

    Great video, nice unit, too bad for the engine damage

    Sometimes the rod bolts come loose. It happened on a hrc216 cracked the side of the block. I took it apart bolted the rod back up. Put it all back together and ran. Only thing also is the key on the flywheel sheard and had to be replaced also.

    These machines are definitely rare, I've only seen a few of them come up on Kijiji and for the most part they are in very bad condition.
    Did you know it looks like a 5-Speed but it's actually a hydrostatic hybrid.
    Even though that engine is blown, I would imagine some of the parts on the engine are pricey, knowing Honda I would imagine a Briggs or Kohler would not both in very easily.

      Someone mentioned a Briggs swap and I don't think I'd want to try, considering this thing is a somewhat rare machine I might buy it off the guy.
      I'll give him a fair offer once I do some research on this model, but knock off $50 or so for what he owes me for my time and pickup.
      And yeah, that's the bonus of buying a Honda, they have amazing transmissions. He said it shifts "smooth as a Cadillac"

    That's weird because it looks like the guy looked after that plus in my experience you usually have to try hard to break one of those engines. You might get a good "post mortem" type video out of that if it isn't too much work to do one.

      I know ! I wonder what the blade looks like after a snapped rod lol!

      GXV240 engines are discontinued, parts are hard to find, I'm currently in the process of either buying it to fix or parting it out.
      I'd like to fix it, but I might end up dropping a newer GXV340 into it, and I'll keep it as my personal mower.

      I have a Harmony 1011 rear engine. It's an 11 horsepower with a 30-inch cut. Single blade. And you're right it's 25 years old and cuts a ton of grass. You have to be really rough on your maintenance to blow up one of these engines. This is back in the day when Honda had something to prove. Not So Much Anymore

      Gota see what he wants to do with it 1st, I might buy it off him and rebuild it but it needs a rod and piston for sure.

    Did the costumer leave it with you or did he take it back ?

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He left it with me for now, until we figure out what to do next. I'll probably part it out to get my payment, and then the rest of the machine will go to him.

    great video man & nice idea with the wire camera. if it was me I'd pull the block and get a new rod in there, honda motors are usually worth the dollars spent, would you agree? pretty interesting to see though, not every day you snap a rod on a honda!

    • @EliminatorPerformance
      @EliminatorPerformance  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I agree, definitely worth saving it considering it's a Honda, but not worth saving to the customer, because of the cost of repair...
      I may end up buying it off him so I can rebuild it myself, as I'm looking for a small riding mower.
      It needs a piston too, if you look closely you can see what looks to be a deformation on the right side, but that could just be carbon...

    • @chrisevil7012
      @chrisevil7012 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, with the right set of tools and knowledge, money is saved for sure, and you might be onto something with the cylinder, im hoping it was just the piston moving strangely for its last couple rpm and nothing too serious!
      Old tractors and used mowers for parts from that engine series are going for around 400$, so if you can get a good price on it I would love to see what steps you think of to start your rebuild process, if it comes to fruition after all. Really great to see another guy's take on small engine issues. All the best man, ttyl.
