  • The main differences between Toronto and Dublin. This video is all about what I learned after moving to Toronto, and the main differences I found/experienced. I thought doing a Canada Vs Ireland video would be a bit of fun - and also be helpful.
    When I decided to move to Canada I did a lot of research but there were still some things that I didn't expect when I moved.
    This video is a brief introduction in to the main differences that I have found, between Canada and Ireland, and how Canada differs to Europe.
    I thought I would be fun to do a Toronto vs Dublin video - and I hope you enjoy.

    I was keen optimistic to travel to Canada, I tried all I could to get a Canada visa I failed for three years, A medical doctor based in Canada referred me to Mr Ethan Lucas and his team really guided me through and I migrated to Canada in 2021 successfully at affordable cost.

    Great video! I agree with Canadian vacations. A company usually starts you with 10 days vacation and then after a period of time, usually 5 years they bump up the days. It is archaic.

      Thank you, I appreciate it! 👐 It's just not enough days off to take a break alright. And then having to wait 5 years to get a few more...it's crazy to me 😅

    Amazing video! As a foreigner to both countries (Brazilian here), soon to be "Torontonian" and having lived in Dublin, your takes were really helpful. What about heating? You talked about housing conditions being better in TO, does that includes heating? I've almost died freezing back at where I lived in Beaumont. No heating at all. For someone who came from a tropical country, it was REALLY traumatic. Don't wanna go through that all over again in TO

    • @WanderwithMi

      Thank you very much! I hope you enjoy your move to Toronto ☺️
      I haven't noticed any issues with heating, but that may depend on the type of accomodation that you get. Any condo is well insulated and you don't notice the cold. Because Canada gets so cold, they know how to deal with it, so most places will be well insulated and have a decent heating system. I agree that back home you definitely can really feel the cold and need the heating on A LOT 😅 but I haven't noticed that so much here - and it wouldn't be an issue in a condo for sure 💯
      You can get some accommodation where the price of heating is included in the rent and others where it's not, so that's something that you should definitely ask when viewing places 💯

      We have 5 PAID statutory holidays ON TOP of our regular paid vacation time in Canada. We START at a minimum (by law), of two weeks (4%), but we go up with time worked. My buddy at work has a full month, which means that our employer has to fork over 8% of his salary every year and give it to him when he takes off for a month...

      Ya, but two hour commutes is not really standard for the rest of the country. I'm in Ottawa. On a bad day, maybe you're on the bus for an hour. Of course, could be much longer in a winter storm. I'm lucky though to be close enough to work that I can bike.

    I was born in Canada, about 12 km from my grandfather's great grandfather's farm. He had come from Ireland and purchased the land in the 1820's. I live in Toronto but most of my family still live in the southern Georgian Bay area.
    The next time you're in an LCBO and see Ardiel Cider, try some. John Ardiel, the owner of the orchards and cidery, is a cousin of mine and he makes great cider.
    In 2019, my wife and I went to Dublin for a visit. We had a lovely time. For the four days we were there, it did not rain. We told the hotel staff that we had brought the Canadian weather with us and that it was fortunate we had come in June and not January.

    Came across your video. Thanks for summing things up that are different between Europe and Canada. I m from Holland and moved to Canada 5 years ago (across the lake from you, actually). The things you sum up, are things we (Euros) really come across as being different. I fully agree with the internet and phone bill and fresh veggies being so much more expensive. Guess the size of the country has to do with it, since it takes a lot of time and money to logistically move it from producer to consumer.
    Good call on the use of CC. Use it as a debit card and make sure you pay off your credit each month. (if you use your debit card it is off your account anyway).
    It will take a little bit of time to get adjusted. Good luck!

    Cheaper houses here in Ireland, condo maintenance fee is like 1500 for the year !
    What ! For the year ! Unbelievable.
    Food is cheaper in Ireland and I get enough sun but you have to watch out for it as it pops out when it wants to .
    I even get sunburn in Ireland because it’s more affordable and I have more time

    Your perspective is very interesting. Thank you for sharing. Interesting that a lot of people do not realize how big canada is. Across Ontario = 23 hrs driving from cornwall to Kenora. Across Canada is 60 hours of non-stop driving at 100kms/hr to get from Halifax to vancouver. In rural areas of the prairies, your closest neighbor is a mile down the road.

    OMG Dublin must be expensive Because Toronto is the most expensive place in Canada to live. The apartment she is describing would be considered a luxury apartment and costs a fortune by Canadian standards. Americans from big cities and some Europeans think it's reasonable, but most Canadians can't afford down town Toronto rent. Some one has a very good job to think a Toronto luxury apartment is reasonable. They could buy a house in the suburbs for less. But then you would have to drive 2 hours or more to get into work downtown each day.
    It's more than 10 holidays there are lots of extra one days for all sorts of reason. almost one a month. Easter, Christmas, labor day, etc.
    Her price on fresh veg is whacked ,I don't know where she is shopping. Toronto is an expensive city though and she lives in the heart of the city it seems.
    As far as credit goes it's definatly something you want to build up so you can get a loan for some big purchase like a car or house/condo. It might be just Toronto or where she is living in a luxury apt. But no one has ever checked my credit score in Montreal. So different provinces have different laws concerning rent, deposits, first and last month rent. insurance etc.

    • @WanderwithMi
      @WanderwithMi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dublin is soo expensive! Toronto is expensive too, but slightly less so than Dublin and the quality of the accomodation that you get in Toronto is better for sure 💯 I by no means live in a luxury apartment 😅 just a standard small one bed downtown!
      I guess coming from Dublin my idea of what is reasonable is slightly skewed in comparison to Canadians.
      In terms of holidays days, you're right there are also bank holidays, but back home and in europe we also have bank holidays in addition to our 21 minimum vacation days, so just basing it off the vacation days which you can book off yourself, coming to Canada that was such a drastic shock in time off, and definitely something other europeans will really notice 😅
      So yeh, Canada is huge so each province has their own rules and regs, and nuances, but this is just based off of my experience in Toronto specifically. I haven't had the opportunity to visit Montreal unfortunately, but hopefully soon (after covid) 🤗

    Hmmmm only 10 days. It depends how many years with same company. I've had 4 weeks paid holidays and I've had 2 weeks. Depends if your Union or part-time or non union. Also many corporations keep up with Union benefits to attract employees & to keep unions out. Just depends what sector your working in There's also things called spending accts within benefit packages also depending on who the company uses for benefit packages offered to employees and what the ratio of employee/employer funding will be. Plus all the long weekends usually one a month or more. Most people i know look forward to long weekends and usually book holidays to take advantage of them to add days to regular holidays.
    You need to find a better $$$ food market.
    The constant complaint of prices not including tax from expats is because the tax rates from province to province is different plus taxes tend to increase or decrease depending on election cycles. Taxes other than payroll taxes are a provincial jurisdiction so that's the difference from euro most likely. Retailers don't have to change the pricing if it's standard from province to province.
    A tool you purchase at a Canadian Tire for example downtown Toronto is the same price in Calgary but the tax rate in Toronto is much higher than Calgary because we don't have a provincial tax and Ontario does plus the gst that's Canada wide. It's very simple really. And if as an albertan there are times I don't have to pay BC provincial tax if I'm purchasing a large ticket item while in BC. That's happened to me a few times

    Amazing video. I’m really considering moving to Canada, especially Montreal as over the pandemic I really knuckled into my French but Toronto is an option too. Tbh one thing they put me off Canada for a while is I didn’t want the “Irish Bubble”, been there and done that. Do you find Canadians easy people to get to know and it’s easy to integrate there?

    • @WanderwithMi
      @WanderwithMi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Montreal is amazing, it's such a nice city 💯 They have different rules however, and it can be tougher to get your visa if planning on heading to Montreal, but it just depends on the type of visa you are getting ☺️
      In terms of mixing with Canadians, I found it quite hard to get to know them, but it depends on a couple of things. If you are working in the service industry I would presume it would be easier to mingle and make friends with them, or if you were to join a Canadian type hobby (ice hockey etc) then you would meet Canadians, and they are very friendly ☺️ You really just have to put yourself out there, and it should be no problem!

    • @s.a.w5493
      @s.a.w5493 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WanderwithMi it depends on the city! Central provinces are typically more friendly. The coastal cities can be really hard to break in to socially, even for other Canadians. When we lived in Vancouver we made plenty of friends, but almost none of them were originally from Vancouver; all from other parts of the country or internationally.

      I have lived here for 43 years and I have not met one Canadian. Every person I've met that I thought was Canadian after they asking me wat my background was (Latino, Ecuadorian, but born here. Always made a note of that because I am so happy to be one, but blessed to have an Ecuadorian background), now because of my appearance I've learned saying I'm Canadian people really want to know where originally you come from, so I automatically say I'm Canadian, but my parents immigrated here from Ecuador. I have never met anyone again in 42 years here say I am Canadian. After I get the question I will say, oh what is your background? And the list I would get lol. I half this I'm this and this. My biggest con living in this multicultural home Toronto is that if you are not of a distinct color then they always want to be from some where else then be Canadian.

    • @selkarogers7662
      @selkarogers7662 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if you made the move to Canada but as an Irish person you won't have a problem making friends here. Best to get yourself out there and meet people at bars, events, volunteering, or going out with coworkers. Canadians love the Irish and we associate Irish people as being good humoured, pleasant personalities and fun to be around. Most Canadians especially in Ontario, Quebec and further east have a lot of Irish heritage that we love to talk about with our Irish visitors (you'll probably get sick of this). Quebec can be tough without fluent French but if you have an Irish accent they'll treat you well and do their best to accommodate, (more contempt is directed to anglophone Canadians than foreigners) Montreal is easier to get by with English than anywhere else in Quebec.

      I used to shop in the Lawrence market for veg etc which was great, but since covid it has been better to do all of my food shop in one shop, and that is the standard price in a lot of downtown shops. Obviously depends on where you shop, but looking at supermarkets I've shopped in No Frills, Loblaws, Longos and Metro, and depending on the season certain fruit and veg is incredibly expensive - especially in comparison to back home I guess 😅

    Good video - but you can only get "halfway across Ontario in two hours" if you are in an airliner. From Vancouver to Toronto is 6 hours minimum in an aircraft. This government has however dug us into debt to the extent that they have simplified the tax return into a question and a statement - Question - "How much did you earn last year?" Statement - "Send it to us."

      The size of Canada clearly still confuses me, it's just so much bigger than I knew and because of covid I have not gotten to explore it unfortunately but hopefully soon 🤞 I might get a better grasp in the geography of it then 😅

      @@WanderwithMi Ontario has a lot to offer (including black flies and mosquitos) but you don't really get to breathe in a full lungful of air until you get to the prairies and you haven't seen nature until you're looking westward from Calgary.

    Honestly, Toronto is a bad example of most of this country. Outside of Toronto, you will find a lot more space, affordable food, rent, clothes, transportation etc. I've lived in other countries & travelled the world, and everyone I meet seems to want to go to, or sums up Canada as Toronto, such a shame because in my opinion, there is so many better places to live within Canada then there.

    • @WanderwithMi
      @WanderwithMi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree! I haven't lived outside of Toronto so can only base my views on Toronto, but having lived in Dublin I would say most of the bad things/downsides of living in Ireland are based off of Dublin more so than elsewhere in the country.
      I know a lot of people who move to Canada do look to move to Toronto so I think it's helpful to be able to give a bit of an insight into Toronto, as that's where a lot of people will be looking to live when they move to Canada - especially those like myself, who are coming from Ireland.
      Once I am ready to move again I will be looking to live outside of big cities 💯 as while they tend to have a lot to offer, they do also come with more downsides such as small housing, expensive rents, and high costs of living in general 😊

    I think I would get very depressed in Dublin. Speaking about taxes, you better off hiring a professional accountant so you can get accurate tax returns and receive the benefits .

    • @WanderwithMi
      @WanderwithMi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah Dublin is lovely! There is a lot it can improve on, but the people and the culture make it a great place ☘️ I think I'll be trying to do them myself again this year, but using an accountant is definitely something I will think about in the future! 😅

      @@WanderwithMi You should look into doing one for sure. Take a look into claiming expenses when you move country. None of my friends knew we could claim flights, accom and food on our returns. It does seem a little dauting since revenue do pretty much everything for us at home but the Canadian system really isn't hard. A simple return for single person takes 10/15 minutes at most.

    ALL you are comparing Ireland to is TORONTO!!!
    WHY, oh WHY do all of you people compare whatever to CANADA, when you are ONLY comparing them to ONE CITY in Canada...
    I can tell you for a FACT, that life in Totonrot, has NOTHING TO DO with life in the rest of the country.
    So, if you are reading this, THINK about this fact before you put my whole country in the same basket as Toronto. The city where 80% of new rivals to Canada go... And think this is it...
