I have this exact model and I went with the more movie accurate look with darker sails and the light grey patches. while the gold doesn't look bad I ended up changing the gold to weathered grey for more accuracy because I'm a perfectionist. While I am new at model kitting this video has given me good pointers to new painting methods to use.
Weathering looks great, love the decking. I always wondered if the black hulls were accomplished with tarring the wood, just like they used to do with railroad ties.
It's fun to google that stuff and find out, but they used to coat things with all kinds of tar or wax, grease, etc to waterproof it and keep it safe from the salt water.
I have yet to see such an easily explained and informative video, fantastic results! I just got this for myself early Christmas present, one of 7 sailing ships up to 22" long to get me practiced up to complete my 36" Cutty Sark that I put away 8 years ago after only getting deck and masts about done. jBut house is empty again so here I go, thanks for the awesome video.
Hey, got both Red Baron and tarantula. Great models! Both myself and my 8 yr. old Grandson worked on them! He had a great time helping me. Tks for the heads up on them!
Outstanding job ! Love this Ship. You have opened my eyes on Snap Fits ! this is a beautiful kit ! After my Captain Kidd and the Jolly Roger kits .. I will pick this one up!! Good job !
Cool, that's the best molded kit I have ever, ever seen for flash, very nice. It would be a really great kit to detail, for all the hard work has been done. Another great score selection, lol. The shadow detail under each cannon really helped. Great rigging job too.
@@hpiguy I also just realized that the Black Pearl was basically The Last Ship you ever built on your Channel So thank you for making her the last 18th Century vessel project you ever made
more valuable and helpful instruction. I'm happy to see you're in the shipping business and if you can plan a series for more I'd love it. Great to see what a snap together can become. I like the details you show in dry brushing, weathering and color selection and of course the money savers like rustoleum and craft paints. More ships when you can.
Thanks for watching James! It was a fun kit, but doesn't get a lot of views unfortunately. Folks just aren't into ships these days, I love them though.
thanks to you I'm now starting to use the same craft paints and i'm very pleased with the results. trying to finish a Revell Mayflower kit I picked from ebay., it's a kit from 1972. I think i'm missing a few small parts but should be able to finish. thanks for posting these videos.
Another fine build from my favorite model builder ! I have been thinking about doing a ship myself. I've never build a model ship before. I love all of the Pirates of the Carribian movies. I did see a model of the Titanic at Hobby Lobby I was thinking about getting and building. But pirate ships are my favorite. Love your weathering effects on the sails. Awesome build ! Keep up the good work !
I'm not a ship guy so I've been on the fence about this kit. But after watching this I think I am going to have to pick it up. Your rigging really makes it pop. Love it!
Pretty nice looking model for an "Easy Click"! You should think about adding some oil paints to your repertoire of weathering materials.. they are so much more versatile than acrylics. Another great job :)
I have built at least two sailing ships;in the last five years. The only thing that I didn't like about them, was the fact the blow molded sails, were thin;and flimsy. They had no structural integrity;to them, what so ever. The next time I build a sailing ship kit,I will superglue some .5 mm brass rod;from K & S Precision Metals,to the insides of the blow molded sails; around the edges;to give the plastic sails, more strength;and structural integrity. If you take the same .5 mm brass rod used for adding strength to the blow molded sails you can make some eyelets and superglue them to the bottom edges of the sails;to tie,and superglue the sail rigging to.The thing I like about this kit,is the sails are a hard plastic;instead of that thin, flimsy, and fragile blow molded sails included in kits like;Revell's 1:196 scale USS Constitution;the 1:150 scale USS united States, and the 1:253 scale German sail training ship;Gorch Fock.
Really like the job you did on this ship. I have poo pooped this model but now I’m going to have to get it. One thing, the Jolly Roger should have been on its own rope and not in the mast. Just my humble opinion. Good videos.
Is that a re issue of an old revel kit? There was a video and i remember the molded cannons and the " web ropes". It was molded in brown. But, re issue or not, it looks great! The ship looks like it has more wieght and dimension! Hope you do Airfix's " Vasa"!!...pretty please!!😁
Beautiful job. I started this today with my son. The detail for the kit type is stunning. I am twitching to paint it, but have probably gone too far in the build (about to put sails on). Can it be retro painted do you think?
Nice job. I love it. I have never built a ship but after seeing this I wanna get one. Thanks for the build review. I was wondering is this a new tool? Cause it kinda looks like the glow in the dark ghost ship revell had out in the 80's. Keep the awesome builds coming and thanks again.
I'm having a hell of a time with the lanterns on the back. I started by painting them a yellow ochre/gold , but I've been unable to get straight black lines around the edges of each pane on the lantern for detail. I'm using a Raphael 8404 #0 and a thinned black, but even with fairly steady hands, I just can't outline them without looking like crap. I've painted and stripped and painted again several times now. Any suggestions?
most ppl would say to dry brush it, using many coats to build it up to a solid colour, but heres some other suggestions : dont use a brush, find something more solid (bristles spread out too much).. try dipping a toothpick *lightly* in paint and scrape the paint on.. or, a bit of cardboard or plastic sprue.. or you could even use the edge of some cardboard (say, 1mm thick, cut to the correct length, and use it like a stamp to do each line) if you have a small very stiff brush, it could be scraped sideways along the line instead of trying to do a stroke. or you could use a small piece of paper with a small amount of wet paint on it (put a small drop of paint on the paper, then wipe excess paint onto a tissue or something), and rub the paint onto the ridges, it might take a extra few coats this way if all else fails, go to the hardware, find the least-tacky painters tape you can, and mask off each line one at a time (for beginners), dont forget to let the painted line completely dry before masking off for the next line. this will give the best result for least effort, even if it does take a lot longer time. or think outside the box, you could paint it inside-out.. paint it all black first, then dip a brush into the 'glass' sections to paint them back to yellow.. the mold/mould lines will contain the bristles if you are gentle (or again, use the tip of a toothpick).
These are some really great suggestions! I'm not sure that my OCD is to the point of masking off all of the little "panes", but the rest of the ideas are definitely feasible. Going to re-primer them today and try one of these routes. Thank you!
It looks like a fun kit to build. Sadly, the pirate flags are inaccurate to the Black Pearl. Her Jolly Roger was a skull with crossed swords (I have a decal of it on the trunk of my car LOL )
I enjoy all your videos. What type of camera do you use to shoot? I’m going to start filming some of my builds and need an idea of cameras that’s good.
Looks pretty cool. I think you probably should have done the cannons in a dingy bronze. And, to be honest I initially thought you shouldn't have done the wood tone on the decks, but it really did turn out great. I do, however think that the sails are a little off. Maybe they should have been given a black base, or at least should have taken them a bit darker.
