  • In addition to Jesus, the Bible mentions several other individuals and groups that were raised from the dead - though it's no completely clear on a couple of them.
Should we believe these claims? How significant should a resurrection claim be, if it's literally only 2 sentences?
The debate will be live, Friday, the 29th here:

When you really look at it, Jesus was a god, spent some time as a mortal (which could not be the preferred form) and then goes home again. It's the classic slumming it vacation. So I agree. How is shedding a vastly inferior mortal form for an immortal god form a sacrifice? It's like saying I sacrificed being poor to become a billionaire. It makes no sense.

How much of a "sacrifice" is it for an allegedly timeless, all powerful being to role play as a meatsack for a few years, then play dead for a couple of days.
At every single point, if such a being does exist, they would have been in full control of the situation as well. Could god not simply pretend to be in pain while in fact they chose not to feel it?

We all had to make a short speech in front of the congregation on the topic "What God means to me." when we were confirmed. I lied, I spewed the typical personal relationship nonsense that everyone else did, yet there was nothing there. Ultimately, I felt more gross for lying about how I really feel than I did a part of a Lutheran congregation.
I feel regret to this day that I didnt have the courage to tell the truth about my skepticism. Religion made me lie in front of many people and it pissed me off... it still pisses me off if I think about it too much.

All you guys act as if having faith or believing in something is wrong or weird or insane, yet everyone’s life is literally dependant on faith.
Example 2: let’s say you have a car and you have work tomorrow and you drive your car to get to work. The faith of religion is not the same faith that one has in another person or anything else tangible in the world.
Religion, specifically faith based religions like the abrahamics are asking it's followers to believe in thing that they will never see taste touch or encounter outside of conceptual ideas in their particular book of traditions.
At the same time you comment doesn't respond to what my comment is addressing. Which is that believers believe wholeheartedly in the narratives they are familiar with while denying all the ones that are "foreign" and not part of their culture. All while they're all categorically just more narratives a group considers valid & sacred.
Few test this validity. Most just cave to peer pressure and defer to the "experts" of their particular theology.

    • @donniehardest875

@@FoursWithin well, the only thing they ask people to believe in is God essentially. One can argue God is everything, so therefore based on that belief they can taste, see and smell God. And there’s nothing wrong with them believing God is everything, like I said, we all believe in things we can’t prove.
Also, about the second part, whether you’re theist or not, everyone believes in something they’re familiar with and discards things they’re not in some way shape or form. That’s literally normal. That’s what we all do. Atheist, Buddhist, Jewish, doesn’t matter..
You may have a particular opinion that I don’t agree with, and that opinion is something you’re rooted in and will not move from, and I might have the opposite view, and we disagree with eachother.. and that’s fine lol.. that’s what makes life interesting and makes us not robotic.

You seem to be tying things together that no one here put together. And also misinterpreting the language being used.
I don't think most people here care what others believe either except when it comes to claims of a supernatural nature that are tied to regulating the thoughts and actions of everyone else.
Most could care less about Hinduism or taoism or shamanism or the line because no one is attempting to force them into doing what those religions believe in.
Sure Matt has the saying about not wanting to believe in any un-true thing.
However as great as that sounds that's really what most people even theists want. Theists are far from a unified group, Christianity is far from a unified theology, and atheists are no different in this manner.
Plenty of atheists never come to these channels or think about what theists are up to at all.
And in that sense although I've interacted with maybe a few thousand atheists over the years most of them are quite unique in a ruon behavior and thought. I don't get the impression of any of them not wanting diversity of thought and culture. ( That's my experience at least )
And I definitely get the impression from many theists ((fundamentalist))
that everyone should think and behave like them or the world will go to rubbish, society will collapse, and we'll all burn in the bad place.
      Forever and ever....
This is part of the context that must be kept in mind.
But if you're a theist, especially of the abrahamics sort, this may be an impossible perspective for you to comprehend.

These stories/claims about resurrections in the bible reminds me of some of the stories/claims I heard when I was living on the border of the Leuser Nationalpark in North Sumatra almost two decades ago.
Many people claimed that they had witnessed all kinds of unbelievable things... and it was as if they competed who could come up with the wildest claims.
One guy I was working with told me (and another person I worked with), that his uncle was a sorcerer (penyihir) and was able to perform crazy sh!t black magic (ilmu hitam).
One of the things his uncle was able to do was, that he could jump to the top of a 5 story building in a split second and had the ability to not be penetrated by a knife, if someone tried to stab him.
Imagine having to translate that to the other person I worked with.
Often stories like these had changed to "the crazier" next time they were told.
Of course... never able to bring forth any proof of the claims - except for the "I saw it myself".

      To reality.
For example if a Hindu claimed , as their sacred texts state, that an individuals soul reincarnates time and time again, over and over into another lifetime. A new body for each new life.. One time a man, one time a woman, one time a cow , next time who knows what..
Would you just accept that ?
Or would you say well that's an extraordinary claim , I'm going to need some equally extraordinary evidence to show it's more than just STORIES of your religious narratives.
Some people may just say I don't believe it because I believe in my own religious narratives.
      But
then the Hindu might say well you'll need to show me why you believe yours instead of mine.

Yes. Extraordinary claims as compared to the reality of the everyday person.
But nde & obe are highly personal .
The most common ground among people having them is that they typically experience realms that align with their own cultural beliefs.
      Similar to people taking psychedelics.
Many of whom claim it shows them the spiritual realm.
However so far the reality is that regardless of the hype we only only know that something goes on, not what.
Since the narrative is clearly filtered by the person's past. Making them so far at least, highly questionable and interesting but not evidence for much .

And the other guests will be completely unfazed, as if this is a very common thing to happen. They'll ask zero questions. And often will then respond their own miracle stories which are met with the same nonplussed attitude. After maybe some weeks or months, another "faith healer" comes to town bringing a "bigger resurrection event". The stories go on. Many believed (conned), we (skeptics) just wait till another story comes up. And yet, to date, many are still waiting for a "miracle". Funny and depressing.

It's like the light saber kill when the torso is pierced. When people come back from the dead, the saber is way weaker.

God was so hands on with the Isrealites before recorded history. He was talking to them, directing them, visiting them, even wrestling with them. These stories qere mostly oral and eventually written down.
What happened? God has (holy) ghosted us.
