Beautiful music by Jacobs: love his musical language for its expressive, accessible, pastoral, cinematic qualities. What a gorgeous, evocative start, with the strings accompanying a flute melody (returning around 3:57) !
Astonishing that this tremendous work isn't better known, even by flute players it would seem. If Ralph VW had written this, flute players would be all over it...and it does bear comparison with that composer. The opening of this is to die for. As a flute player I am getting so much pleasure and learning so much from playing this concerto.
Exquisite flute from Alexa Still in a concerto that has restrained, delicately-textured and flowing string accompaniment. This is a really beautiful work....
Never heard it before but I like it. Alexa did splendid work. Congratulations!

Concerto for flute and strings (Gordon Jacob) 00:00 I. Moderato con moto 05:36 II. Allegretto 09:09 III. Poco adagio et espressivo 15:53 IV. Finale: Allegro molto quasi presto.
This is lovely, not a piece I was aware of before. What a wonderful champion of lesser-known British works Nicholas Braithwaite is. He seems to fly somewhat under the radar but I recall his recordings on Lyrita and would purchase them, regardless, because I instinctively trusted his interpretation (often the ONLY interpretation available at the time!).
