I'm assuming (and I'm probably wrong) the "modes" Bloch has used here are largely Gregorian ones, although the Allegro has a certain folkish quality. Whatever the case, the music is rather lovely and is performed beautifully by Alexa Still and the strings.
Max, I once read that of his contemporaries, Bloch admired Vaughn Williams, both of whom loved folk music. Whatever the mode I can hear a little touch of VW here.
