Thank you for this “fresh” version! I know Americans usually use the canned cream of mushroom soup which I can’t get in Estonia. Can finally try the infamous green beans I’ve seen in movies. 😂
As I was about to hop to another video, I noticed your comment (I clicked on this video by accident). The mushroom soup is one reason I pass on this dish. After watching (twice), I am inspired to make this 😀
Thank you, Beth. The green bean casserole looks like it is going to be absolutely delicious. I will definitely be preparing this casserole for my guests. You are the gold standard of cooks on TH-cam. I always check out your previous recipes when I looking to make something delicious. Your high quality care is very inspiring to me. Thank you.😊 Lu
Ah Beth, you are consistently presenting us with winners with every post!! I so enjoy green beans and this more “enriched” version of the classic is most appreciated! Heading out to the grocery now so will gather what I need! BTW have been revisiting various posts/ videos for other meal ideas- your presentation is empowering and encouraging!
Yum! Have moved away from all canned soups, so I look forward to trying what looks to be an excellent, fresh version of this classic dish. Thanks so much Beth!
WELL DONE. The blanching, cold bath, etc. makes a big difference. Nothing worse than over-cooked mushy green beans. The sauce is perfection. I don't know why people use the yucky canned soup. The camera work in your videos is always superb.
Aww thanks that means a lot to me, since I'm still doing it myself LOL! But I now have an editor who is editing the videos for me and it's been SO nice!! He makes it all look even better! :)
Thanks for this beautiful side! I always make my own with fresh beans, mushrooms, sauce, but mine does have the chicken broth! I'm going to switch and make yours this year, instead. I smiled when you got to the point where you added the mushrooms/shallots over the green beans and said you thought it looked good as it was. That's my favorite side dish (just a little bit lighter on the mushrooms)! I just put some butter in a ramekin, add sliced almonds and microwave until the butter and almonds lightly brown, then pour them over the top. Fast for a weeknight dinner. I'm really looking forward to the rest of your Thanksgiving recipes! ❤ And your blouse is exquisite with the stitching. So pretty on you!
I so agree with you keeping the sides vegetarian! I was a vegetarian for 10+ years and everyone always asked what I ate for thanksgiving - I ate everything besides the Turkey because my mom did the same & all the side were veggie :) Plus it was so delicious!
I made your recipe for Thanksgiving. I couldn't get shitake or cremini mushrooms at my local stores. I used sliced baby bellas (8 oz.) I fried the shallots and mushrooms separate using 1.5 T butter with each. The Worcestershire Sauce in the mushrooms was genius. I know that you talked about vegetable broth in your video but I didn't see it anywhere in the recipe. I made the béchamel sauce but my sauce broke. I'm not sure why, but I used the sauce anyway. I figured the French fried onions would cover the broken sauce. I loved this recipe. I would make it again without the packaged French fried onions. Anything fried since a recent hospital stay really turns my stomach. Since it already has the wonderful shallots, next time I would try a topping of panko crumbs. The freshness of the vegetables were what made this dish a winner for me.
First off, thanks you for such a wonderful dish. My family doesn’t do green bean casserole and I’ve craved it for years, but something extra this year. 🤭 This recipe makes me so stoked. I planned to make this dish right after I watched your video. A day later, after buying everything the night before Thanksgiving, I am prepping and cooking right now. I’m so excited as this is the first time I’ve made something for my family’s thanksgiving EVER! And especially since being out my parents’ house. I think last year we bought stuff. I’m excited to bring something yummy over. Thanks again! 😁
Good Morning Beth, the green bean casserole was my dish to bring, always the can, than one year i decided to try making it fresh can i say totally different and delicious, i did do one thing can the fried onions, so no more cans
Thank you for your recipe of this nice Thanksgiving side dish. I'm going to make it today and as I don't have fresh mushrooms I just use dried ones. And I have to make the onions myself as the shops here are all closed on sunday. Greetings from Vienna, Austria/Europe!
I will use this recipe because I love your approach to not wanting the mushrooms to take over, but you do want them to be present. I am all for that. And the 3 types used. Good idea, too, to leave the edges showing that it's a green bean casserole.
Yum! Do you know I have always seen this classic dish for thanksgiving but didn’t really want to make it because of the canned soup etc. but this… is all fresh ingredients so this year I’m going to have it on our table! Thanks Beth! Love that you can make it ahead of time. Always simple and always delicious!
Where would I be without you, Beth!? Your videos are the thanksgiving/entertaining bible to me. I’ve never made green bean casserole before but your video gives me the confidence to know I can! Thank you for all the tips.
Thank you for sharing this recipe!! I love green bean casserole at Thanksgiving but I’m never thrilled using canned beans and soup 😂 this looks delicious and will be on my table this year!!
I smile when I hear you use the word dilly dally because I use it often. My husband is very slow in doing things and I always tell him to not dilly dally around. LOL.
This looks so good!! I do have a question. Would it be terrible if I prepped this ( up to the topping) and freeze it until Thanksgiving? Would the freezer ruin it?
Great question you could freeze the mushroom sauce and then defrost in fridge over night then reheat and then cook the green beans fresh and proceed as shown :) I’d be afraid that freezing the green beans would make them too mushy :( hope that helps!
Ah bummer! OK you could top with bread crumbs, but use the bread crumb recipe from my mac and cheese recipe, they are homemade and would be great on this. Here's that recipe! Enjoy!entertainingwithbeth.com/baked-mac-and-cheese-recipe/
Beth as a vegetarian in a family of meat eaters, I am glad to have one more recipe for next Thanksgiving dinner. I have always used mushroom mix from Trader Joe’s. Next time, I will try using fresh ones. Quick dumb ? … I am so confused about prepping mushrooms - should one wash them or not? Some say do NOT wash mushrooms and just wipe them with moist cloth… Please advise.
This looks so good! Can you believe it’s not a classic in our family’s Thanksgiving meal?! Maybe I’ll introduce it this year. Only problem is, some of us are allergic to mushrooms, can you believe it? ☹️ anything I could use as a substitute?
Sounds great, but I just use fresh green beans cooked for 12 minutes. Add 1 cup of packaged fried onions and a can of cream if mushroom soup with 1/4 cup milk. Mix and bake 350 for about 35 minutes. Just so easy.
Unfortunately, I don’t think these would freeze well due to the green beans. They might get all soggy when you reheat them. But you could definitely make them the day ahead.
This looks delicious! Thank you for trying to keep your side dishes vegetarian. Just an FYI: Worcestershire sauce is made with anchovies, so using it means the dish isn't strictly vegetarian anymore. You can buy vegan Worcestershire at stores like Whole Foods, or you could sub soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, or a combination of soy sauce and vinegar instead.
Simple recipe. Another idea is that In the time your turkey rests you can cook the beans top them with a little olive oil or butter, chopped garlic and parsley. Much lighter dish and Thanksgiving is such a heavy meal. Another sauce to cover vegetables is unnecessary.

What a refreshing recipe for a Thanksgiving classic. Merci!

Beth it looks gorgeous, but I always put in a touch of nutmeg. It’s classic.❤
Oh sure that would be great too!

The crispy onions are a must have..especially on thanksgiving. This looks incredible!
They are! ha!

Happy Halloween, Beth. Any outfit you were is just absolutely beautiful, and you speak so sweetly.
this looks utterly pleasant. I am also returning to your pumpkin bread recipe for the first time this season... It is just so good.

Thank you for sharing this recipe!! I love green bean casserole at Thanksgiving but I’m never thrilled using canned beans and soup 😂 this looks delicious and will be on my table this year!!
I know what you mean, it was never appetizing to me that way either! This is SO much better! Hope you enjoy!!
Love this dish!!! It would not be Thanksgiving without it! Also love you did it from scratch!❤️👏🏻
Oh, wait to try it. It’s so much better from scratch!!
Can I use storebought mushroom soup as a cream sauce?
YUMMY!!!!
Looks yummy!
Looks yummy Beth!
Yummy!!!
I smile when I hear you use the word dilly dally because I use it often. My husband is very slow in doing things and I always tell him to not dilly dally around. LOL.
Lol! Its a handy little phrase when you need to pick up the pace! Ha! 🤣💕
Perfect timing Beth! I'll do this later :)
I can tell that is pretty tasty. I might actually try making your version this year. My family might rebel though.
Definitely trying this version for Thanksgiving. I've used Martha Stewart's green bean casserole for years.
Hope you enjoy! I go a little over board on the mushrooms, but they are just so good in it! Ha!
New subscriber!! Delicious recipes❤
Mmmm Yum! ❤

Thanks for the reply! Yes, that does help! I think I’ll do it your way! Looks delicious!! Love your videos!
@candicehigdon6642 aww thx! So glad you enjoy them!
Hi Beth any ideas on a substitute for the crispy onions? I can’t fine that brand in Australia 🇦🇺
Ah bummer! OK you could top with bread crumbs, but use the bread crumb recipe from my mac and cheese recipe, they are homemade and would be great on this. Here's that recipe! Enjoy!entertainingwithbeth.com/baked-mac-and-cheese-recipe/

Oh no!! You could use just the shallots instead but increase the quantity to 1 1/2 cups hope you enjoy!
It looks delicious.I wish you had a recipe i could follow .😋
Here is the recipe you can print it out :) entertainingwithbeth.com/fresh-green-bean-casserole/
❤❤❤
Sounds great, but I just use fresh green beans cooked for 12 minutes. Add 1 cup of packaged fried onions and a can of cream if mushroom soup with 1/4 cup milk. Mix and bake 350 for about 35 minutes. Just so easy.
Do you think that can be made ahead & frozen & cooked on Thanksgiving day?
Unfortunately, I don’t think these would freeze well due to the green beans. They might get all soggy when you reheat them. But you could definitely make them the day ahead.
This looks delicious! Thank you for trying to keep your side dishes vegetarian. Just an FYI: Worcestershire sauce is made with anchovies, so using it means the dish isn't strictly vegetarian anymore. Thats right!! I totally forgot about that! Thanks for reminding me!! 🤦♀️
Simple recipe. Another idea is that
In the time your turkey rests you can cook the beans top them with a little olive oil or butter, chopped garlic and parsley. Much lighter dish and Thanksgiving is such a heavy meal. Another sauce to cover vegetables is unnecessary.
With that fancy house you don't have an ice maker
Ha! No im pretty lo tech
Vegetarians can bring their own dish they shouldn't expect to be catered to
