Skating has changed mostly online, the real essence is being around the homies and just actually having a good time, that hasn't changed.

Refreshing to hear this point of view. What you said about the changed atmosphere of the skatepark because of privacy lost due to social media is so fucking accurate and I kinda feel devastated by it. It feels like so much is lost now. We are not in a better world because of Instagram, but it’s only gonna get worse.

I started skating in 88. I’m biased cause street skating from 88 to 95 evolved nearly all the way in that time. Sure it’s gotten bigger and crazier and more consistent. But saying it’s not as cool now as it used to be just seem lazy and dumb. There is definitely just as much style style now, you just have realize that there is a ton of garbage content.

Skateboarding has been evolving since day one , I was a technical skater when skateboarding wasn’t very technical because I have a good imagination, once Tony Hawk pro skater came out lots of kids were influenced to try rediculous stuff because they saw it in a video game by the time I was 20 skateboarding was getting crazy anyways skateboarding will evolve until it hits a peak just like every other sport

In 2010s, skating kinda rose up to being more competitive and didnt really prioritize style but focused more on who's good at the board. Social media always been about the image you display yourself on screen, so since social media became popular overtime, thats when style and aesthetics have been brought into it, like do simple tricks, but with enough style, its gonna look good. You can also observe it from the new generation and compare them to the older gen, the clothing different, music, tricks they do and just overall.

Yup just liked the 2000s is different to the 2010s, then the 90s, 80s, and now the 2020s. Its just a new era is all it is. Someday in another decade we will look back on this decade and feel nostalgic about it too. Its all a cycle.

Everyone seems to instantly try to kickflip n’ whatnot. Personal opinion, just focus on A) having FUN, and B) getting comfortable riding your board. Ride around for hours and hours, don’t worry about tricks. I find just riding to be fun. Maybe mix in some super basic non-tricks (‘10 easiest tricks for beginning skateboarders’ type stuff’) to feel like you’re progressing. Only then start working on basic tricks. I think way too many people start out trying to Ollie day 1, and while that may work for some, it’s far more likely that you’re going to get frustrated and never come back to it.

I'm 32 and started 6 months ago. Just go out and try to go to skateparks and other places where people are skating. You're right, it's awkward at first, but only where there are no skaters. Every skater is understanding of how hard it is to start out and will try to help you! I made a bunch of friends in my city through skating.
Now after 6 months I'm just rolling through the city, ollieing up curbs and I can kickflip pretty consistently too. Don't wait, start, if you have that urge you will start sooner or later either way :) The best tip tho: Try to get a friend involved. That's the best motivation to get each other out every day and skating.

Dude, I got back into it about 8 years after quitting. I'm 27 now and while my body is getting old (2 deployments) Im loving it. The mental peace. Being outside. Being apart of a culture that is so inviting is intoxicating. I sprained my ankles and dudes were helping me up and genuinely concerned. You do that anywhere else people laugh and pull their phones out. I hope you get a board and get after it. As for where to start, grab a deck you like at your local skateshop and get a complete. Theyll give you the right parts. Dont ever be embarrassed. Life is too short and were all going in the ground one day so make the most of it!

Just ride around. For me, I started at 28. I remember being a 10 year old with a Walmart board and was actually doing Ollie's, even though it was the hardest thing in the world to do on a Walmart board. But it snapped and I never rode again. I was poor lol. Now I skate a Powell board. By the time I figured out my size and all that, I was already good at riding around. Start by doing kickturns and random drills for like 2 weeks maybe. That's how long it took me but maybe I still had something from when I was on that Walmart board still in my brain, bc it wasn't hard for me at all. Some people are very awkward at first so be ready for that. Just push through it the first week and it'll get better.

I'm just kinda stoked it's gone far enough forward that it can go back i.e. it's cool to do old tricks if you want, dress how you want, don't have to wear certain shoes, there's all the different deck sizes & shapes; if you get on a skateboard it's no longer necessarily about being part of a collective or movement trying to progress the sport itself because it's already come so far already, so you're free to branch off and explore all it's eras/phases.

When I was 12 I basically was the only skater in a whole city of a 120k people. At least I have never met any one with a skateboard and those I met have been 6yo racing down a hill on there skateboards sitting on them. Yeah well.... We didn't even have a park or anything. Skated basically alone until I was 16 and gave up out of frustration for being so isolated. Not learning much because well I was alone all the time and had no influences from the outside. There was no internet at that time so I was f*cked. About 16 years later when I was 32 I started skating again. Now I am 41 and have more fun than ever with my homies. I actually wanna hear you talk more about this, I grew up skating lakai and always wanting Zero boards but have never had one even till this day, had a almost board I remember very well. My fits then were Gar bage and today their mediocre cause I just dont give a shit, I wanna be more like Dylan Rieder but physically cannot pull that off. I loved Chris Cole the most back then and now I love guys like Rieder, Olsen, Louie and Kevin Rodriguez. Skating has changed so much with the prominence of social media, it kinda makes me hate it. I hate the romanticize appeal of it now, I love to skate but I downplay the fuck out of it now cause watered down all it is, is playing with your little wood toy which coincidentally is why I like it. Especially with how skating is looked at today I want to move more towards how Rodney gets his skating in, all alone at night.

I've seen baggy clothes worn in the 90s by skaters. To him, he thinks that it went from skinny jeans or chinos to baggy clothes when in my life, it went from baggy to skinny to I guess the word is comfortable. Skater clothes today is baggier than 2012 but not as baggy as the 90s and early 2000s. That's why I use the word comfortable. I'd never be able to wear skinny pants or baggy pants.
