Why Portugal has 12'000 solar panels on a lake

  • The Alqueva dam in the south of Portugal plays an essential role in the region's water supply. Agriculture in particular benefits from this water in the driest part of Portugal. Since 2022, the dam has been expanded with around 12,000 solar panels. This is a good idea for several reasons. First and foremost, there is space. The reservoir is 250km² in size, the area is flat, unobstructed and can hardly be used for other purposes. In addition, there is already a power connection, as the dam supplies electricity to the grid. The symbiosis of the two types of power generation is interesting. While the solar panels protect the water from evaporation, they are cooled and thus achieve a higher degree of efficiency. If you look at the area utilised, the yield is also astonishing...
