    This summer saw the release of multiple big budget blockbusters and while they had some hits there are many that ended up underperforming. This is the result of multiple factors such as budgets being to high, to many being released at once, etc. Can Hollywood course correct?

    "It's not about the love story anymore, which is really, really wonderful!" Um....Rachel honey, are you okay? Do you need a hug? Does Greta Gerwig need a hug??? Someone involved in this production really needs a hug. Seriously, all this talk of love being "bad" is starting to sound like a coping mechanism from a group of deeply lonely and severely traumatized people. No sane, well-adjusted human being thinks that falling in love is "dated" or "problematic." Our relationships, both platonic and romantic, are quite literally necessary for our survival, both as individuals and as a species. It'd be one thing if they decided to explore different kinds of love besides romance, like friendship and family, but they never do that with these girlboss movies. The main lead is always alone and hyper-independent to the point that she doesn't even resemble a real human being anymore.

    Here are the problems:
    1) Over production with over marketing

    Rachel casually joking about Andrew having ALL of his scenes cut because “It’s Hollywood, baby!” is probably one of the most disrespectful things I’ve ever heard. He gave up his time and energy in the project, making his own personal sacrifices with loved ones and other things, for a chance to show his talent to the world. If all of those scenes are cut, then he literally wasted his time waiting on costumes, make up, cues, action, etc and won’t have a chance to be seen by the audience who (I’m assuming people would watch this 🤷‍♀️) may never see him in anything else.
    Screw you, Rachel! I would never talk down like this about any of my coworkers!!!

      He will have gotten paid regardless, and honestly not having his name attached to this train wreck might be a blessing. But it suggests Disney isn’t at all confident about the script they’ve got if they aren’t even sure whether a fairly major character will make it into the final movie or not.

    • @jendoe9436
      @jendoe9436 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@cathygrandstaff1957 I did mean to express those sentiments, as having one’s names attached to a bad project can really set back a career. But, I still feel bad that all that time and energy he put in would still go to waste, even if the pay is good.
      I have quite a few writing projects on my hard drive that I never went back to. Looking back over them every now and then, they were just done for fun and probably wouldn’t have gone anywhere (some are especially bad 😅), but it was still a labor of love at the time and I sometimes think of all the hours spent writing and researching are now just gone with little to show for it. That’s sort of what I’m projecting onto Andrew. He may very well appreciate the fact he won’t make any appearance in the movie and still got paid good money, but time is one of those resources you can never get back.

    Snow White was never about romance, in fact the main criticism the movie always got was the romance felt like deus ex machina, so if they want to "update" the movie, they should've give the prince more screen time and extend his romance with Snow White more, as in the original film the romance was only "established" and not "developed", since there's only limited run time
    But to be fair that's a common problem with all old films, the writing were simply less tight and sophisticated as morden movies, because back then the movie itself were the spectacle, people weren't watching it for story or characters, they're only watching for the moving picture, let alone an ANIMATED moving picture that's filled with imagination and beautiful art, while most movies back then were still black and white

    • @partyharry7585
      @partyharry7585 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      Also, another reason why the romance felt underdeveloped was literally because it was the first animated film. They had struggle animated the Prince's character. So they had to scrap most of his scenes. And those scraps were later used for Prince Philip's scenes in Sleepy Beauty. They could actually "finish" /or "fix" the film in a way with the remake.

At this point they keep painting themselves as they villains and expecting us to just take whatever fake moral high ground crap they keep pushing and like it. It's not going to work anymore Disney. You can't keep doing the same thing over and over and OVER and expect results. They've been doing the "Female Empowerment" schtick for almost a decade, ever since the lion king remake happened when they gave Nala a meaningless scene where she commands the lionesses. Now they've essentially crammed female pandering into every live action remake too very little success. Peter Pan & Wendy, Mulan, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and now Snow White.
    I REALLY hope someone, somewhere ends this madness soon otherwise Disney might not ever be able to recover. Mickey Mouse will have to leave his fellow disney friends behind to be put in a mental hospital if this keeps up.

But it also is capable of running the flow of fictional storytelling and beloved fictional heroes and heroines. The only way to get people back into the cinemas, is to stop making streaming movies and TV shows. There is just too much content out there, and people are not able to watch it all. I remember when I was a kid, going to the movies was something special. It was the only way to watch a movie on a big screen, with high quality visuals and sound. But now a days, it's common for people to have giant flat screen TV's at home, with surround sound. So it's more common for people to just watch movies at home. It also doesn't help that studios release new movies on streaming, just a few days after they have released in the theaters. The only way that will change is if movie theatres sue the studios for taking away their business.

    Part of the issue, I feel, is the lack of very many "middle market" movies. Movies that are higher budget than straight indies and can therefore get some wide release, but also aren't so expensive that they need to break a billion to break even. They're much lower risk as a result, and if some become hits, they can then give those movies the blockbuster treatment later and turn them into event films.
    Batman Begins was a great example. It wasn't a huge success, but it was still a decent one and brought Batman back after the disastrous Batman and Robin. Then The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises were mega blockbusters.

    From a tactical perspective shifting to big budget box offices makes sense, with rising ticket prices viewers are going to be more selective about what movies they see. If those movies are predominantly the big budget box office tent poles like the Avengers of course Hollywood is going to respond by making more of those movies. They don’t understand that viewers have budgets and just because you offer more than one movie a month (or whatever anyone’s limit is) doesn’t mean people will see more than one movie a month.
    Really the problem is the theater system being in a death spiral, and Hollywood being too dependent on theaters.

      And that’s part of why it’s kinda sobering. Yeah, we occasionally get gold every once in a while, but it’s all but drowned out by a ton of shit. We might just be in the middle of an Audience-Alienating Era for the entirety of Hollywood.

      @@SagittariusAyy Movie studios are just producing too much content. Back in the 90's, which was like the peak of cinema, people had to go to the theatre to see new movies. And if you wanted to watch your favorite movie at home, you had to wait like a year for the VHS or DVD version to appear. But even then, you had to watch it on a small TV screen with poor quality. But now, people can just wait a few weeks and watch it from home, on a large screen 4K TV with surround sound.

      I don't think that's going to happen granted they been having a lot of problems lately but it's not just the movies that are the problem have you seen the prices for movie is way too high that's why I most people are deciding to wait for a movie to come to streaming service or digital. Another problem is that most of the movies you see in theaters are based on existing properties now I got nothing against reboots and remakes as long as they are done correct the problem is there isn't any original movies because studios are not willing to take chances with our original project

    The live action movie enchanted, not the sequel series, did a modern spin on old fairy tales and mostly following Cinderella and Snow White and it worked well.
    It mentioned how you can’t marry someone you met a day ago and living happily ever after isn’t simple, but they made it work.
    We don’t talk about the sequel series.

Which is sad but for the most part everything else you said about this new version of Hollywood I agree with you 1000% the ideas of entertaining the audience and then letting them escape from reality just for a few hours or an hour means nothing anymore.

    The idea of taking a family friendly property and making it cynical is as trope as it gets. Besides; there was already 'Death to Smoochy' which will most likely be the inspiration for the Barney film. Or Barney is a serial killer, or Barney is a predator, or any other number of clichés they will slap into it because the director most likely hated Barney because his younger siblings watched it all the time.

    The Girl Boss Princess would seem to become cold and unapproachable to most men. In films where women dominate, and many of the male characters are weak and unapproachable, it's not like males can identify with these characters. I think why Barbie succeeded, you didn't take something that once used to appeal to males, and change it to something more female centric. Barbie was already a property that appealed to females, and I guess making the males nasty and/or weak, wasn't such a big deal.
