- Knitted by Whitney Podcast Ep 30 -- Focusing on a lot of WIPs
Welcome to my channel! I'm so happy you're here and I hope you enjoy! I started a knitting podcast because I didn't see many podcasts hosted by plus size knitters and wanted more representation for us, so why not make one myself?

Your new Bibliophile is looking great! Acrylic yarn comes in such pretty colors! It's already hitting 80F here in Texas and humidity and dew points are also high. Because Texas is so hot, I almost never use acrylics and most of the garments I make are tees with linen, cotton, bamboo, and silk blends. I mostly save wool and alpaca yarns for shawls and accessories. I REALLY want to do a super cozy Lento or Bibliophile 2, but there are only like 5 non-consecutive days between January and February that I can wear a big, cozy sweater. But I love to admire the ones you're makng an get some cozy in vicariously through all the more northerly knitters.
Thank you so much! I admire knitters like you who live in hot and/or humid climates who find a way to enjoy this hobby and make beautiful pieces out of plant fibres! It gets really humid here in the summer so I'm working on expanding my summer wardrobe slowly but surely ☺️
Hii! I love your scoks, that fitted husband :D I have to admit - i knit TAAT (two at a time) socks, toes-up. I do pull yarn both from out and from the center of my yarn cake. It was a little fiddly at the begining, but now it is my favorite way to work on them. So that once I'm about to finish my ball, i measure that i have enough yarn to wind across both socks 3-4times for the BO, and everything else gets knitted ;)
Two at a time socks are so impressive! I have a friend in my knitting group who does them and she always looks so relaxed 😂 I can definitely see the appeal, but it will take quite a few pairs knit one at a time to feel confident taking on two at a a time!
This is exactly how I have always knit socks as well. Yarn management can be a bit fiddly, but a small price to pay in relieving my Yarn Chicken anxiety and compulsive need to use up every last inch of a skein. lol
@ exactly same! 😍 great minds think alike! 🤣
@@knittedbywhitney it is as easy as one at a time :D but take your pace to enjoy knitting and knit as many socks as needed :)
I had problems learning to knit socks but saw Kate Atherley on Fruity Knitting and bought her book, Custom Socks. I studied the book and took my time. Now I feel like I have mastered socks! I tried magic loop, DPNs and finally settled on 9” circulars. I have the “recipe” for each person I knit for in my phone. I also discovered that I prefer toe up and convert any pattern that I knit to toe up. I use stitch markers and I also use a sock ruler from Knitty McPurly. The heel turn and gussets are around two inches so I know when to start the increases. I also make socks with at least an inch of negative ease.
I have been a subscriber for a while and love your enthusiasm! Great company whilst I knit 😊thank you
Thank you so much! It sounds like you've cracked sock knitting 😃
Hi
Enjoy your podcasts. I usually do my sleeves also before I finish my body. After I split for sleeves I knit until I finish my working yarn ball, then finish sleeves and then finish body last❤
That's exactly what I do and it feels like it goes faster, but also it makes it easier to knit the sleeves with less bulk from the body 😊
I just knew that yarn from nerds with needles was going to be something my household geeks out about... Bumblebee from transformers...lolol. great episode! I love that souffle and can't wait to see what you decide to do about the collar
Thanks so much Ruth! Yes! They have so many cool nerdy colours 🤩
That dark blue is really beautiful on you! As a newer sock knitter (I used to think I’d hate it, but I really enjoy it), I feel your pain. Some of the best advice I’ve read is from Summer Lee, who said that everyone’s feet are different and in order to get that perfect fit the best thing to do is simply knit a lot of socks! I have small, narrow feet, and at first I was really frustrated that my socks were coming out too big for me. Three or four pairs later, and I’m starting to understand what needle type/size, stitch count, and pattern types will work best for me. Experimenting is key, and the good news is that if you need to rip it out, it’s a small project! I highly recommend Summer’s book “The Sock Project,” and I’ve read that Kate Atherley’s “Custom Socks Knit to Fit Your Feet” is really helpful if you need a truly custom fit.
Thanks for the book and designer suggestions, I'll take a look ☺️ I think I've got enough of the sock bug to be determined to keep trying until I get a pair that fits my feet, so I probably have a couple more pairs in me 😅
I second the Summer Lee suggestion for socks. Socks can be fiddly, but they're a great way to play with color. I recommend knitting shorty socks until you're comfortable with sock knitting. Takes less time! 😅
@@ginnyl1717 I only wear very thin storebought shortie socks so I know I wouldn't like handknit ones, plus the cuff feels like the most relaxing part of making socks so far 😂 But thank you for the suggestion
😊❤❤❤
I love a fleegle heel for toe up socks. Andrea mowry’s drk everyday (or bear paw for dk) are great toe up ribbed socks. I LOVE knitting sleeves then body. My favorite color is cobalt blue, and I have decided blue dye, unlike me, is never exhausted.
@@Azuresparky I had actually planned to make the Bear Paw socks until a friend recommended the free pattern I made instead. The fleegle heel looks like it gives a good fit, but I don't really like the look of it aesthetically. I might try it someday though 😊 Blue dye is sooooooo pretty, but it comes with a cost lol 💙
Everything is lovely but I really love your Tolsta tee!!
@@EvieO1950 thank you! It feels really special because I put extra effort into personalizing it for me 💕
Hi Whitney, I love love love your videos, you give me inspiration. So I have MS and am in a wheelchair, so I am always looking for size inclusive cardigans. Will you kindly find me an easy one ? And using a frugal yarn base. I will be hopeful you will show me the pattern ❤
Beautiful sock! 💙 I love knitting socks, it was a painful journey to get here though! 😅 I also despise dpn's for sock knitting, though I do use 15cm dpn's to knit my heels and toes, because it's less fiddly. I went from dpn's to magic loop to addi flex to 9 inch circulars. 😄 I particularly love the sock wonder lace by addi, they are by far my favourite, they are much better than the chiaogoo ones. All 9inch needles did hurt my hands bad in the beginning and took some time to get used to. There are also so many different kinds of structures for heels, it's so much fun trying all of them. I concur with recommending Summer Lee, their free basic sock pattern was very helpful to me.
@@taikis720 hahah it seems socks are a pattern that everyone has found their own way to in different ways and it's great to see people sharing the knowledge they earned along the way 🩷
I had issues with the 12-in because of the bend it would cramp my fingers up and with the 9-in because my fingers would of course cramp up. But chiagoo makes a mixed shorties where you can get 2 inch and 3 inch tips along with two cords It's a little set and it's been a godsend for me making socks because I actually really love socks. I simply use the longer needle in my right hand in the shorter needle in my left hand and I have no more pain.
Ooooh that's cool too! I didn't know about those needle sets, but it's so cool to see how companies can come up with so many different options for us. Everyone knits differently and the same tools don't always work for everyone 😊
Believe it or not, I had almost the same experience with sock knitting in January haha
I made a dk weight, ribbed sock ... and I'm NOT a sock knitter, just like you🤣 Also, if I'm honest, I really don't think this project made me a sock knitter... the fit is not great (even though they're wearable which I guess it's a win, especially for a very inexperienced sock knitter), I didn't HATE working on them, but didn't love it either and it was a bit fiddly, even with mini circulars (but still better than magic loop in my opinion). So yeah, will I make another pair of sock? I'm not sure, but not for a while at least😂😂
I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggles with socks and isn't jazzed about sock knitting 😅
