  • Fittingly for my 1,000th video I have something very special. Yesterday, I was privileged to have been invited to the immersive listening session for Steven Wilson's new album The Harmony Codex at L-Acoustics in North London. Listening to this music in this format of 18.1.12 is perhaps unique and exciting, but I'm certain the eventual stereo mix will be amazing too. I know I'm all superlatives at the minute, but I think this might be his greatest achievement yet. I think you'll like it!

    Thanks for the review and comments. I’m from the L-Acoustics team and was the principal operator in mixing this incredible album with Steven’s guidance. Pleasure to have you in our listening space.

    Good review and I like how you delved into the listening format on release. I gave this a first listen on a long drive today. While sounding different, the diversity and scope of this immediately reminded me of Grace For Drowning which i love. I know it will require many more listens, giving it a proper listen on headphones as I go to sleep tonight.

    Wonderful description of the event music and experience. As you say you had the ultimate version we will have to accept a lesser immersion but still excited that this captures some or most of what makes Steven Wilson so great. Just listened the record first time while driving to Airport. I’m stunned. What an Album this is💪🏻
      The Arpeggios, percussions, soundscapes etc are all top top notch and I can’t even imagine how good it was with that immersive Lisa system😊
      Even though I was driving I felt at times that I was floating in some clouds 😂
      It was pitch black with some mist and I listened with my AirPod Max headphones and the Dolby Audio mix.
      After listening it the first time I started to wonder, how much creativity one needs to have to give birth to something like this🤷
      I’ve ordered the vinyl of course but also started to think about getting a 7.1.4 system for real Dolby Atmos. Especially after listening this.

    Well Jim, having just bought the vinyl and cd of this ( it better be ) amazing album today, i hold you solely responsible if i dont like it hahaha. Only joking mate. You must feel extremely honoured to have been invited along to such a prestigious event, i know i would. The fact that, you were invited along, tells you that, YOU, and YOUR CHANNEL, have obviously being noticed. To be invited along side the man himself, Nick Beggs, John Mitchell is an absolute honour. I only became aware of this event a week or so ago when a young woman who's channel i watch posted a video informing her subscribers that she had been invited along to the same event, im talking about Niamh the prog nerd, amazing young woman whos passion for music is unbelievable giving how young she is. Apparently both her and her dad were both invited. Did you get to talk to her much ?

    The best way to put it is the feelings I had I haven't really felt since I heard Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. Try to describe the experience of hearing Dark Side of the Moon. You just have to experience it for yourself. Mind you the experience is the combination of the video and the music. But at any rate the music is amazing. This is coming from someone who isn't a big Porcupine Wilson fan. I never had a Porcupine CD or Steve Wilson CD. I do have his remixes and they are great. He won me over with this one. I plan to buy this CD hopefully a Blu-ray mix.

    Been a Porcupine Tree and SW fan since the mid 90s so quite a long time! Very little of the prolific output in that time that I have not really liked. Loved the PT tour last year and have enjoyed SW on every tour since he went solo. Everything he does sounds amazing and so far really love Rock Bottom with Ninet. Can't imagine how good that listening experience must have been!

    I already have got green eyes.
    You deserve to have been invite it. Your are not 'just' a reaction on the you tube, you make music available to someone like myself to hear music and say, gods that was amazing I must have that, to no going give that a miss and not spend my money for that.
    To be honest I don't understand the type of listening systems I am not clever for that enough! brilliant but certainly understand the Listen to it loud with the lights off... (it was written on the back of Marllions brave cover). butyou mean. Just in lifetime things are just that. I am so glad you have had your moment.
    About time you had a time like that. You make me happy for all sorts of reasons. Life can be hard sometimes which I know you know and these things come along to give someone who brings happiness to others. Sorry going on but I am so happy for you.

    You gave encouraging words about The Harmony Codex by saying it wasn't like The Future Bites. I did not like that disc at all. When I heard the first song released from THC (Economies of Scale), I was instantly skeptical. That song style is not what I want from SW. I will reserve judgement until I hear the entire album due to your comments. Thanks for the info on the new SW disc.

    Thank you for this great review, I will get the blu ray version and I have a Dolby Atmos system, 9 speakers in total so no where near what you listened to, I was disappointed with Future Bites I thought is was one of his weaker albums, but it contained some good stuff, my favourite is Hand Cannot Erase, and deadwing from the PT era.
    Sounds like the experience was out of this world, and its shame that you or anyone else will never hear it like that again, its such a shame that music production is not given the attention it deserves, for all to enjoy most people will never be in the position to afford a system of that expense.
    But at least SW mixes not only his own material so well but other bands as well giving them a fresh audio lick of paint, I was trying to think of a experience similar to your own, and the only thing I could think of was this, back in 1969 my dear dad said we were going to see a film called 2001 a space odyssey, visually the film was stunning as was the music, that experience was never repeated just breathtaking,
    Sadly the last film I saw Oppenheimer, the sound quality was just overbearingly loud no great details, cinemas should invest in great sounding systems, still looking forward to Mr Wilsons masterpiece.

    • @JimNewstead
      @JimNewstead  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I mentioned on another comment that there should be some audio version of cinema. Dedicated listening spaces for serious music lovers and serious mixes. It could work as a business couldn't it?

    • @clivewalker13
      @clivewalker13 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a great idea, but I don't know if there is a market big enough to support it, it's really frustrating with cinema sound and TV sound, the action sequences are louder than a 747, then the dialog you struggle to hear what's being said, how many times with modern films do we have the volume turned up for speech then when the action kicks in its eviction notice time.
      Cinemas do not spend the cash on good sound systems, which should be as important as the visual quality, most films from the 40,s to 70,s don't have that problem with the mix being even.
      Still maybe one day things may change untill then thank god for Mr Wilson.

    The single and the album cover definitely give off Future Bites vibes, so I am somewhat glad to hear it's not all like that. Although that album did grow on me, I much prefer his other styles.
    Really fascinating technology I hope to see it more widespread like cinemas but it seems unlikely since the music would need to be remixed for the system and most albums would not be popular enough to sell enough tickets to cover the half mil invested.

      @@JimNewstead thinking about it, it's kind of a return to the days before electronic entertainment where people would gather in large halls and sing, and the very architecture was designed around improving acoustics. Utilising electronics to bring a renaissance of this kind of listening experience is a beautiful full circle. I definitely see it as different to the typical concert atmosphere where its about "the experience" rather than about the music.

    I don't really understand, why Wilson would present the album for some elite audiences since many weeks now. Maybe because not a single person of the chosen ones would dare to speak about weak moments on the album.
    As no "normal" music fan will ever be able to listen to it on this ultra-super stereo, it makes no sense to me.
    In the end it's music and the single left me quite underwhelmed. So we will see, which "cinema for the ears" normal fans will experience.

      I think you don't know or understand me Marty - I'm not an elite at all, I'm not a paid music journalist or on anyone's payroll to write these reviews film videos - I do it for the love of the music. If I don't like something I'd not shy away from saying it. There is nothing to fear form this album, I promise you.In regards to your first point, I suppose it's the logical conclusion of the "this is how the artist intended it to be heard". How many listeners of music will hear it on the studio monitors as good as those used to record, mix and master? And in addition, I would say that this is a presentation of art. You say why? I say why not!

      Dont be naive. You sit next to Beggs, one of 25 people but of course you"re not part of an elite.
      The fact, that you got invited, is a form of payment already. I haven' t heard a single person putting up even a glimpse of decent critique after this event.
      "The music is the best thing ever recorded" is literally everything, people say - after listening to a quite "difficult" record once.
      On these stereos even a fart would sound like a new miracle.
