Yes. Mark 2 Ford Escorts. There are also a couple of Mark 1's in the video - the one where the driver waved at the track marshal he almost hit and one with door/competitor number 111. Very popular cars in the day, cheap with the option of using components from more powerful Ford's... and most importantly at the time, rear wheel drive.

Ford officially retired from rallying in 1979 but returned a few years later after developing 4wD for their rally cars.

The blue car you asked about is a Ford Escort Mk 2, the engine was a Cosworth.
Ford originally designed the Escort to be a family car and released the Mk1 version in 1968, Ford started making tuned up versions for racing and rallying in 1968 with a Lotus engine.
From 1970 Ford fitted Cosworth BDA 16 valve engine and the RS name was born.

Although these V6 turbos sounded great, nothing can beat the class Bs, which raced between 1982-1986. Their power-to-weight ratios are still unmatched to this day. They were super-light in weight and often exceeded 500 hp.
On another note, I was privileged to get to ride as a passenger in a 555 Subaru Impreza driven by Richard Burns for a demonstration lap during the 1995 Hong Kong - Beijing Rally, as I worked on a promo video for the 555 State Express Team. Even though it was only a short, figure of eight dirt track, my heart was in my mouth the entire time and was glad to get out of the vehicle in one piece.

What you ought to watch are the World Rally Races (WRC) and see some of the best drivers in the world-period. (Tommy Makinen, Juha Kankkunen, Colin McRae, Thierry Neuville,
Elfyn Evans, Sebastein Ogier, Kalle Rovanpera, Ott Tanak and of course Sebastian Loeb)
One of the very best, was a Frenchman called Sebastian Loeb,
who I think won the world championship 9 times and also laid the record for Pikes Peak. Fantastic drivers, better than Formula 1 and Nascar. On snow/ice/mud/gravel/tarmac/water and sometimes grass! nothing phases them. The notes you refer to are the navigator, who writes down in code all the corners and bends/hills and dips even down to the degrees of the corners etc and shouts them out to the driver, who does not know the circuit. Thats what makes the driver even more amazing.

There were also a couple of MK I's in there too, the others were MK II's and all of them between 45 and 55 years old too! The thing about these cars was the solid rear axle, rear wheel drive and leaf sprung which is great for bouncing around and doing those swift hard turns without reducing speed too much as it was easy to 'drift' the backend and having a solid axle the whole rear end would bounce off the road easier too.
These cars often won the whole rally outright.
My first car was a 1972 MK I Ford Escort and you really could throw them about the road, not so good when it went into a spin on the snow and ice when you weren't expecting it to though 😁😲

The string of words from the co driver is ‘pace notes’ often they will walk the course before the day of the rally and mostly its distance to the next instruction then the instruction. For example 200 left 90 could be 200m (or more likely back then yards?) left turn 90 degrees. They also use slight, hard, tightens and severe to describe the corners

There used to be a rally of Great Britain, and there would be stages typically held in Scotland, the Lakes, Wales , a lot being set in `forestry' areas, but some on public roads which were closed for the day. I remember rallies back in the 1960`s when the little Mini-Coopers were very popular, and the drivers who did well were often from Finland or Sweden. The GB rally one year finished in Margham Park, south Wales, my daughter was at University nearby and had a Norwegian boyfriend who knew the driver who won.

In the 70's my brother and a friend were heavily into rallying at club level, but they moved up to international rallying, but costs meant only racing in Britain, between international events there were plenty of "club" events such as 12 car, this is a race primary against the clock but on open roads, where are start heading to map coordinates, the idea is to take the shortest legal route, it might not be the quickest route, but that would show up in the time taken and the distance traveled, the idea was to promote better map reading but also common sense road use.
The international rallies we took part in were as you see here, following a cordened off route "quickest from A to B before moving to the next stage within a set time "this was to stop people from trying to get repaires to the car outside of the set times allowed (service stops)".
You might have heard the name Colin McCre, sadly killed in a helicopter crash, his dad Jimmy was racing at the same time as we were, he is a wonderful person, no bluff and bluster with him, it didn't matter that we were a privateer team, he is a lovely bloke. You mentioned about the Isle of Man TT there is a great tradition of motor spot on the Isle of Man and the Manx Rally is one of those events, now bikes squeezing around the island is entertaining, getting cars around at speed "you breath in for them". Much of the rallying done in the UK has been dropped unfortunately, logistics and fuel prices are big concerns, as well as environmental of course, but they still happen, just not to the same degree or for as long, I'm pleased that you are finding it of interest, the Group B cars were absolutely mad, watch some of those, you won't believe your eyes I promise you.

Like so many other have said, you have to watch some group B rally's from the eighties. The Welsh stages were always a thrill to watch. And your right about the co-driver, such an important role, without the co-driver calling out the driver would effectively be blind, thyey can only tear around these stages like they do because of the co-driver and his or her notes.

This is a compilation, not a single course or event. Of course this is not possible in automatic cars, the stick shift is needed to make instant gear changes to get those turns. These ralleys take place all over the UK & Europe, both day & night, often endurance events through mountain & forest areas. The co-pilot navigator directs the driver. They both will have studied the course minutely beforehand.

The MkII Escorts (as others have said, the one you saw a lot of) are very popular here, and across Europe (though moreso here in the UK). They were successful in the late 70s in rallying, and were also a very popular road car, which meant there were a lot of them, and so they became cheap as they dated, and so a lot of people bought them - as you can see - to turn into rally cars. They're not cheap now.
Mitsubishi Evos are also fairly popular here... similar (I think) price points to the WRXes, but we had Evos with 350-400hp from the dealers, so understandable they'd be liked for rallying.Though getting more expensive since they're not made any more, and WRXes are There one you liked the sound of was a Peugeot; 306. looks like a proper rally kit-car, possibly ex works. Skoda Fabias are very popular through Europe too... in mainland, and especially into the Balkans, they become the go-to. Northern Europe, it's Volvos. Italy/Spain etc... not sure actually. Germany you'll see old Mercedes and Audis being rallied. I think one of the night time ones in this might've been an A3.

Also you should binge some EVENFLOW videos, it's some mad Irish guy that has a load of rally style cars on his farm, he does comedy skits involving the cars. You'll get what I mean if you watch it, no regrets. 😂👌

Rallying did not start in mainland Europe. Britain developed its rallying from time trials on public roads that eventually took in off-road stages. Today rallying rules and formats have standardised across the world and now broadly fall into two categories modern and classic rallying, with modern rallying following the main competing manufacturer cars, whereas classic rallying harks back to cars used up to 1980's like the Ford Escort, which is a perennial favourite. Modern rallying is faster but classic rallying is more spectacular and entertaining.

    metro 6R4
    Focus and fiesta st
    Peugeot 306
    Hyundai Accent
    Impreza WRX
    Lancer Evo
    Skoda Fabia.
Rally stars you need to watch, the late and legendary Colin McRae and Richard Burns.
If you fancy a change of pace how about the British touring car championship (btcc)
Can recommend the 1992 final at Silverstone, and pretty much any race from the Super Touring era.
Also watch Gordon Sheddons save at a very wet Rockingham race track.
Enjoy from a damp and misty England.

13:37 so this is a Ford Mk2 escort made from 1975-1980…great cars and one of my favourites, rebuilt 6 of them over the years. The Mk1 and Mk2 never got sold in the US, you did get a version of the Mk3 but they made changes to the bumpers etc and it looked horrible compared to the euro spec Mk3s…tbh Ford came up short on the American market with the great cars Ford Europe were producing like the Ford Sierra especially the Cosworths were great rally cars…you did get a version of this to but was rebranded to one of fords sister companies called Merkur but like the Mk3 escort they changed bumpers and trim and it looked fat and nasty compared to the euro version

I watched the RAC rally for years all over the uk and, in the dark. It isn’t dangerous and I have been to the TT too, that is nowhere near dangerous.
Americans are used to ovals in enormous stands.
Back in the 1970’s your ticket to watch bikes or cars racing said in big letters, motorsport is dangerous!
Stand in a forest in the dark 6 feet from Michelle Mouton thrashing the life out of an Audi Quattro.
