It does. If you don't feel sad during Grandma's little talk about missing her late husband, then you're heartless. Unfortunately, similar things have happened in my family. My paternal grandparents married when he got back from the war in 1945, and remained married until her death in 2004. He was never the same after that. All he wanted was to be with her until he died in 2009.
Last Christmas, that scene hit me harder than before - my grandpa passed away last July, and I swear grandma Arbuckle could be describing him to a T. Even the picture of his late husband could pass for a cartoon version of my grandpa, and he was exactly one of those laconic, gruff type of old men. He taught me how to fish, how to ride a bicycle and how to change tires and do an oil change. I miss him
"Shoving Christmas down people's throats will not help them enjoy it (let them come around on their own)," is a hard message that's gonna help everyone, and I'm proud NC, of all people, had the guts to deliver it.
RIP to the great Pat Caroll. Her Christmas speech reminds me of what it could have been like when my own grandma had her first Christmas since my grandpa’s passing. It’s so powerful…probably one of the best individual speeches in a Christmas special ever.
Amen. Davis said in the 20 year anniversary book that the line "look at me, I talk to cats" in the comic strip was so good they had to use it when they made the special.
Eh. They're pretty cool, but they're sort of afterthoughts which came way late into the history of NC. I prefer truly classic characters that have been there from the start, like Bill.
Grandma with Garfield in the rocking chair is my favorite, it actually makes me tear up, I had a cat and my Grandmother was the only person she would sit like that with when we visited. My Grandmother passed away 4 yrs ago in February and this makes me think of her. I love that I am not the only one who loves this scene.
RIP Pat Carroll. I mainly grew up with her as Ursula in "Little Mermaid" and "Kingdom Hearts", but my God, she just kills it as Grandma in this as well as the Thanksgiving special.
Even now as a 47 year old man, that fireside scene with Grandma and Garfield causes me to bawl like a baby. It especially became poignant to me when I lost my father in 2016. That was a hard Christmas to get through, but this special definitely helped.
Chaplin and Buster have no right being this adorable. Also I never realized this special existed. It’s so cute and charming and I wish I had this growing up. Plus that scene of grandma with Garfield is beautifully done, where even if someone is no longer with you, the holidays can help you remember how much they meant to you. Merry Chaplin everyone!
Fun Fact: Garfield usually takes place in Muncie, IN, where Jim Davis works as faculty at Ball State University. Grandma Arbuckle makes mention of a gravy competition in Greene County, IN, which is west of Bloomington, Indiana. This suggests the Arbuckle farm is in Greene County.
You know what's so great about Garfield is that either your a Adult or a Kid you can still love Garfield no matter what which i think just shows how good of a character Garfield is.
RIP Pat Carroll she was one of my favorite voice actresses of all time! It breaks my heart every time I hear her in this charming special! She also not only play one of favorite Disney characters, but my favorite villain of all time! 😢❤
Great review. 100% nostalgic. My sister and I could recite this, and did, from memory. Grandma in this reminded us of our great grandmother. Spitfire of an old woman. I still remember the Christmas when we both realized the grandmother was mourning her deceased husband for the first time. Now this with be the first Christmas our grandma gets to tell that story. I will do my best to be the best Garfield for my grandma. Ok, let’s not end on a sad note. Merry Christmas to you Nostalgia Critic and to the whole crew and your families (speedy recovery Rob)! I love how one of my favorites is also a good one for you too. Again, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
This really was a special for older people. The hassle of going to your parent's house for the holidays, the silly urge to follow childish traditions even when no other kids are present, and the inevitable dealing with grief of a loved one at Christmas.
I loved the incorporation of the kitties. I think the filming was very well done considering cats do what they want when they want. I was really surprised how well Chaplin's stop, turn head back, wink, and walk away was done. I can't imagine how many takes that took.
The Garfield Christmas Special & The Muppets Family Christmas are the two most criminally underrated Christmas programs ever made. The Muppets one is difficult to find (except on TH-cam) due to a complicated situation related to the licensing rights of the music used in it, along with how all the Henson creations got farmed out to multiple different owners, ie, The Muppets is owned by Disney, while Sesame Street & Fraggle Rock is owned by HBO.
I literally can only distinguish Tamara's voice when the three different cats are talking at once. Malcolm and Rob have such a similar timber they cancel each other out.
@@Craxin01I mean, it's not identical. I meant that Malcolm sounds like Rob, who isn't in this clip at all. Although I probably wrote that half asleep, knowing what I was up to last December.
The scene where Grandma is sitting down talking to Garfield is one of my favorite Christmas scenes ever. It reminds me of my own Midwestern farm family and how we remember the relatives we've lost.
To quote the late great Norm MacDonald and something i'm sure Garfield might be thinking about is: "All my life's about is cracking up people and them cracking me up and trying not to think about dying. That doesn't cost very much money."
Wow I just saw this with a friend for the first time like, a week ago. Its surprisingly good. And deeper than expected. There's actually a few lines and hints that not only is grandpa dead, but it's recent. She's talking about eating healthier, working out to be in better shape, is acting eccentric partially to hide her pain, and when Jon greats her and asks how she's doing, she respond "oh I'm holding up fine... considering". To start it seems that last part is just her talking about being old, but with hindsight, she's saying she's holding up alright considering her husband is gone.
@@avosmash2121 the whole special feels so much like you are walking into one of many, many christmas' and Christmas traditions with this family. The story the dad tells is a great example of it, you can see the tradition starting with it being a story he tells the kids and everyone loves it, then as the kids get older you can imagine the dad enjoying it and the kids being annoyed as he tells them this childish story in a goofy way as they have to listen. And as it turned when the kids got older and the dad started feeling silly doing this child story so seriously for adults, as Jon and Doc Boy get to force him to act like they ar elittle kids as they revel in making him do it full blast. Its an adorable microcosm of what us a special that truly brings you along on just... another christmas on the farm.
this is one that is special in my family because the grandmother looks like our grandmother, and the scene of her in the rocking chair, triple hits in the feels as she did lose her first husband long before we came along.
When asked about Bill Murray voicing Garfield in 2004 Jim Davis had this to say: “It was because of Bill Murray’s attitude [that he was cast],” Davis tells us. “It wasn’t really so much his voice. It was the fact that he embodies the attitude that Garfield has always displayed in the strip. Lorenzo [Music] obviously wasn’t a choice since he passed away years ago, and when the producers said, ‘Bill Murray would like to do the voice,’ I thought, ‘Oh, cool.’ My biggest concern about doing a CGI Garfield with live action was that people wouldn’t buy into the fact that this was our Garfield-the Garfield we’d known all these years. But I thought that as soon as they heard Bill Murray’s voice they’d get it. There will be that emotional tag going with his voice. That will establish the fact that, ‘Yes, this character has attitude.'''
Man. As a kid, my mom recorded a cbs broadcast of wheel of fortune, charlie brown and this. I was always most excited getting to this. Being older now, its amazing how harder this special hits now.
Oh god I watch that special every year and it still gets better. Every time I did notice that there seems to be two different versions up to when grandma talks about her husband. I like the one where they sit in the dark better. It’s just more whimsical plus it gives an excuse to see Grandma play the piano.
The simplicity in the story telling is what makes it so heartwarming and relatable. Family coming together for Christmas to spend time with each other.
I just watched this episode and I still love it. Lorenzo music is fantastic and the scene with the grandma is touching in the most cheesy but sincere way. It's a classic special
My cat is a lean mean winking machine. It would take more effort to get a shot of her not winking. I was concerned but the vet says there doesn't seem to be any reason for it.
Pat Caroll is also Granny from the Disney dub of Totoro. Knowing her most as Ursula, I think it’s a matter of her changing her tone of speech rather than her voice, and it takes serious talent to do that so effectively that it feels like different characters
I watch this every year. I like the humor (especially with the grandma playing the piano) but there is a fair amount of heart to it too. Its really sweet and sad when she talks about her husband, and you really do feel her loss. It’s a pretty quiet moment too, something about her voice and simple music in the background really plays at your heartstrings. Of course, Odie’s gift to Garfield is sweet too. so what this is a story inside a story inside a story.....crticception! I like the original as you said I just like that Odie is doing something nice and actually clever for once
This special has become one of many things I think of when remembering my sister during Christmas. We watched it every year and would quote it randomly to each other. I never imagined as a kid just how much the monologue about missing someone during the holidays would strike a chord with me later on.
This has been and will forever be my favorite Christmas special. I watch it every year without fail. It originally aired right before my first Christmas. Watching it this year has been especially hard, as it is my first Christmas without my dad. He passed away in July, and our shared love of Garfield was always a special part of our bond. Grandma’s speech with Garfield in her lap really pulled at my heart this time. I miss my dad so much!! But I’m thrilled to see my favorite animated feline get some love and recognition and I know my dad would be too!!
I never watched this special, but knowing about the classic era of Garfield cartoons, I knew that the music numbers were always incredible and this special continued that trend. What lacks in animation they compensate in good story, scenes and emotions throughout this cozy adventure at the Arbuckle's family farm. I never knew Pat Carrol was in this special, but her speech was really heartbreaking and that comparison you made about the different animations and colors is very interesting. Last year, I made an essay about what I consider the most important aspects about creating a movie, and one of the points I did was the Location of the filming, where some scenarios, combined with the right colors, could support the development of the story. Colors are important because they can help the directors/animators transmit the right emotion of each scene to the viewer. That dark blue of the snowy night really helped us feel that we wanted to be close to Grandma Arbuckle, and Garfield was the perfect contrast, thanks to his warm color fur; like a hopeful flame to heat her sad heart.
This one especially hit me close to home because I lost my grandpa around Christmas time when I was about 10 and my grandmother is fading as well. I rewatched this last Christmas and that last scene hit me hard.
@@ChannelAwesome and happy holidays to mr rob, ms tamera, mr malcolm, mr jim, ms heather, ms aiyanna, mr walter, ms rachael and mr Fard, oh and mr barney
I've always been amazed at the great color language in this special, too. The way the snowy christmas morning looks in its yellows, blues and whites was striking even as a little kid. And how smart it was to slightly dim the light in the tree lighting thing so the sparkles were brighter (that part still makes me happy even today). The version we had on VHS was the one where Odie makes the present and the scene with the grandma shows the picture of the grandpa. Such a great little show.
I actually watched this special for the first time a couple years ago and it's become a traditional watch for me every year now, along with Elf and Arthur Christmas! I love it not just as a feel good Garfield Christmas special, but also as a bit of nostalgia reminding me of my whole family coming to my grandma's house to celebrate, and later that night me, my brothers and cousins would have a traditional sleepover where we'd eat cookies and watch Christmas movies until we fall asleep. We're all grownups now and it's been ages since all of us got together for the holidays...sigh...
When my late, maternal grandmother learned how to record things, she used to send out tapes. She sent us one to celebrate my younger brother's first Christmas, in the woebegone era known as 1996. It featured the three original Wallace and Gromit specials, A Garfield Christmas, Mickey's Christmas Carol, and too many commercials which makes living back then look pretty darn cheap! This would also turn out to be my grandma's last Christmas, as she passed away the following July, but I still have the tape, and intend on getting it transferred to DVD this summer.
First off Rob I hope you get better soon. The Christmas episodes of the Nostalgia critic are honestly sometimes the only highlight I have this time of year. I don't have family as my dad died in December of 2020. Its sad but watching these videos makes this time of year feel less depressing. It makes me feel like someone out there would give a crap if I killed myself...
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. And please do not kill yourself, a lot of people love you !. You will reunite with your father when the time is right, until then live your best life and remember you are loved!. Happy Holidays!!!
One thing I don't see anyone else talking about is that Jim Davis really loves Christmas. Every year he spends a few weeks of Garfield comics dedicated to the holiday. And just like Garfield and Friends has a lot of stuff based on the comics. There is a TON in this special taken directly from some of the older comics. From the exchanged about chores, to Mom's food options, I practically remember reading every other line at some point.
I owned a DVD with the Garfield Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas specials on it. And I was lucky enough to get the newer version of the Christmas Special with grandma talking to Garfield about her deceased husband. My god, that is one of the most beautiful sequences I've ever seen in anything Garfield.
This brought back a ton of memories. I actually grew up with this cartoon in the early 2000s, as a kid I had a DVD with a bunch of Garfield holiday specials. I actually had no idea until now that this was such a well-known and beloved special. I always assumed as a kid that it was some cheaply made obscure thing because of an obvious low budget, but I always loved it as a kid and watching this reminded me why remember it so fondly. That night scene with grandma always hit me so hard back then, and even harder as an adult.
Lorenzo Music is a legend, Garfields voice is iconic to a whole general of kids, myself included. Its just perfect its how I always heard it in my head when I read the comics even before I ever saw the cartoon.
I love this Christmas special. Especially the relationship between Garfield and Grandma. They have such a cute, genuine connection with each other and I love seeing them together.
19:05 Actually that’s something my own family does. Dad always reads ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve. We’re all adults now but it’s still something we do each year. Merry Christmas Doug. God bless you, Rob, your Dad, Tamara, Malcolm, Brad, Chaplin, Buster, and your Mom. :)
There used to be a Garfield Minus Garfield version of the special that played Hello Zepp in the final moments and was hilarious. I loved this special (the actual version) growing up. Revisiting it as an adult, I’m still impressed and touched by it. It has some really poignant moments. Definitely a favorite for sure.
Honestly, Grandma's speech reminds me of how much I truly miss Grandpa. Don't get me wrong, I miss him year-round, but... It's something about the warm, fuzzy, and inviting spirit of the holidays that really remind me of him. He'd could be hard as coal at times, but... Whenever it was the holidays... He'd let his inner diamond shine bright. ✨✨✨
Fun fact about Ed Bogas, he also composed songs for Heavy Traffic, Fritz the Cat, and Black Girl. . The musical connections is just as fascinating as the voice acting connections and the animator connections. . Happy Chrimmas. . .
My family had a seasonal special VHS tape called the Polaroid tape (because the tape was made by Polaroid, of course). Anyway, the very first thing on that tape was the Garfield Christmas Special. And I loved that tape growing up. That tape also had Wil Vinton's Claymation Christmas, How the Grinch stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown's Christmas, and many, many others. That tape was packed!
I would read Garfield comics as a kid, so naturally I loved this special. I especially love how they take the comedy right to the edge of screwball, but don't cross that line so they can still bring it back to the sentimental parts and they still hit.
I didn't grow up with this special but somehow I find myself wanting to cry upon watching the 1991 version clip of Grandma talking about her late husband while petting Garfield.
@@supershoutmonx8327 Eh, people usually say Merry Christmas at the last date they expect to talk to someone before Christmas... Which raises other questions.
I used to watch the Garfield Christmas special on CBS, I love when CBS used to make cartoon specials like Peanuts and Garfield, even the Story of Santa Claus and a talking Teddy bear cartoon.
I loved both Garfield Christmas versions that aired on CBS, and I saw both the original 1987 version and the 1991 version. It brings back the emotional scenes that the special once had a long time ago. And I’m glad it continues today.
@@garynealyjr. I wish the Garfield and Peanuts specials would air again on network TV, I’m glad I can see them online, but it used to be an annual tradition when CBS used to air animated specials, now it’s mostly just reality shows and celebrity themed game shows!

What are you talking about? It’s clearly Ike’s natural voice
Merry Christmas Channel Awesome!
Happy Holidays Channel Awesome and a happy New Years!
Hope Rob has a speedy recovery and is back soon.
Happy Holidays Amy!
This one especially hit me close to home because I lost my grandpa around Christmas time when I was about 10 and my grandmother is fading as well. I rewatched this last Christmas and that last scene hit me hard.
Happy holidays critic!

Hopefully Rob will have a speedy recovery!
In other words, Merry Chaplin (Christmas) Everyone!
🎅 🎄
I actually watched this special for the first time a couple years ago and it's become a traditional watch for me every year now, along with Elf and Arthur Christmas!
I love it not just as a feel good Garfield Christmas special, but also as a bit of nostalgia reminding me of my whole family coming to my grandma's house to celebrate, and later that night me, my brothers and cousins would have a traditional sleepover where we'd eat cookies and watch Christmas movies until we fall asleep.
We're all grownups now and it's been ages since all of us got together for the holidays...sigh...
Chaplin is such a good actor!
Thanks for giving this brilliant underrated Christmas special some much deserved recognition.
I love Doug’s unapologetic love for Christmas
My heart goes out to Rob. Hope he gets back on his feet in no time.
One of my all time favorite Christmas specials. That scene with Garfield and Grandma still gets me every single time.
Garfield. Of course.
The most Christmas of all properties
The late Pat Caroll officially made the perfect choice to play Ursula in Disney's The Little Mermaid.
11:53 this scene makes me wanna see an animated short of all the cats just getting into shenanigans
Lorenzo Music is a legend, Garfields voice is iconic to a whole general of kids, myself included. Its just perfect its how I always heard it in my head when I read the comics even before I ever saw the cartoon.
Chaplin: "Merry Chaplin! I'm Christmas!"
Lloyd: "No, you're not!"
I love this Christmas special. Especially the relationship between Garfield and Grandma. They have such a cute, genuine connection with each other and I love seeing them together.
Man who knew all Bane wanted was a Keyboard.
For what it’s worth, around this time I always binge Nostalgia Critic’s Christmas stuff to condition my mind into the holiday mentality.
Honestly Garfield could sell me Life Insurance and i still would probably be entertained.
So this is why we never let Cookie Monster on a Dirt Bike after he's chugged 40 Red Bulls.
Buster's "I'm so done with this" face was unexpectedly adorable. ^_^
1:07 So glad that even when though Rob got Covid they still pressed on and even made a tasteful joke about it. What a great little brother.
I say it every time... It makes me so happy to see Chaplin and Buster! Such naturals! Hope they're doing well and Rob too.
Holy shit, Nostalgia Critic. I was literally in the middle of watching this just as you posted this. I got to say, you have incredible timing.
TIMING!

The cat skits never fail to amuse. I always love when they happen
Fun fact about Ed Bogas, he also composed songs for Heavy Traffic, Fritz the Cat, and Black Girl.
.
The musical connections is just as fascinating as the voice acting connections and the animator connections.

Happy Chrimmas.

Wow i see Moses had a lot of trust for Garfield to tame those Dolphins
My family had a seasonal special VHS tape called the Polaroid tape (because the tape was made by Polaroid, of course). Anyway, the very first thing on that tape was the Garfield Christmas Special. And I loved that tape growing up.
That tape also had Wil Vinton's Claymation Christmas, How the Grinch stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown's Christmas, and many, many others. That tape was packed!
I'm honestly more surprised we haven't gotten a reboot for another Garfield show where this time he's voiced by Andrew Garfield
Honestly, he sounds like a better fit than Chris Pratt.
I would read Garfield comics as a kid, so naturally I loved this special. I especially love how they take the comedy right to the edge of screwball, but don't cross that line so they can still bring it back to the sentimental parts and they still hit.
If only Don Cheadle would of tried to stay away from that Talking Couch that weird Lamp Salesman assured him to get
I didn't grow up with this special but somehow I find myself wanting to cry upon watching the 1991 version clip of Grandma talking about her late husband while petting Garfield.
Santa Christ, Santa Christ We love Santa Christ!!! 😂😂😂🎄🎁
Santa Christ is the best!
@@ChannelAwesome How far back does Santa Christ go?
And he also loves pancakes!
@@Watcher3978 I actually agree with this. Rob is the best character actor on the show.

wait its not even christmas yet idk what country/state you're in but im not in christmas yet
@@supershoutmonx8327 Eh, people usually say Merry Christmas at the last date they expect to talk to someone before Christmas... Which raises other questions.
I like how he "ruins" a sentimental scene without going too far. It's still a sweet love letter- it's just very sexual now!
@@pika_dusk ohhhh ok
i did not know
I used to watch the Garfield Christmas special on CBS, I love when CBS used to make cartoon specials like Peanuts and Garfield, even the Story of Santa Claus and a talking Teddy bear cartoon.
20:42 both are good to be full of Christmas spirit and in the spirit of Garfield.
