    Yeah, kinda pity with the bad mix. Try this for the full setting:

    Or this to hear the orchestra only version:

      Yeah, the Oslo concert has a much better audiomix than the one in Vacken. I have them both on bluray, there is a major difference.

      @@CriticalReactions The Oslo concert went live on their National Television NRK 1 (28.05.2011). Probably some highly skilled technicians were called to make sure the sound was pure and sharp.

    The Oslo concert was better produced than the one from Wacken. That's the main concert on the dvd. Wacken is just a bonus.

    With that theme, hopefully people voted for some Septicflesh.

      + 1, they are the masters of that indeed, in extreme metal at least, then, of course, there has to be on that list for me Satyricon "Mother North" with live orchestra...in less extreme lots of bands...Epica & Therion, comes also to mind...

    Go for Progenies of the great Apocalypse - Dimmu Borgir, But if you want more symphonic go for Rhapsody of Fire.

    Great pick, sucks the audio wasn't great, Mourning Palace or Vredesbyrd are masterpieces, same show at Waken, the best quality is in the 90 minute full show on TH-cam, you can skip to specific song in description

    I wish you'd re-do this video with the better quality version of this song, or some of the other live performances from Dimmu Borgir with orchestra! So much for you to analyze in those versions :) Generally, the good audio mix recordings of these concerts are called "Forces of the Northern Light", so if you see that in a title, it sounds good. I think you should definitely check out "Mourning Palace" from Dimmu Borgir at some point, of course the "Forces of the Northern Light" live performance.
    To answer your question about who writes the music, it's written by the band, they know their stuff about classical music. In their early albums they mostly used a lot of piano, and later they went to full orchestra. The album "Abrahadabra", from which the songs like "Dimmu Borgir" or "Gateways" are, is written with this full orchestra on the album. The orchestra they used in the two live shows (Oslo and Wacken) is the same orchestra they also had record the album with them, so the album versions sound very similar. They don't usually tour with an orchestra, they only did 2 special concerts with this style, the one in Oslo and Wacken. Normally, they just have the orchestra parts, and the choir parts, as playback on their concerts and only have the band itself on stage.
    I think you might find this video interesting: th-cam.com/video/4s88vxHjWrs/w-d-xo.html
    That's a 12 year old TH-cam video of Mustis (one of the Dimmu Borgir band members at that time) playing "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" (a song from their 2003 Album Death Cult Armageddon) on a grand piano. I think that specific song was composed by Mustis, so he knows that song very well. Different songs are composed by different people of the band usually. "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" is normally not a piano song of course, but the fact that Mustis can play it so well on a Piano shows that he probably primarily composed it as a Piano piece first, and then later made a metal song out of it (just a guess). Dimmu Borgir never "released" a Piano version of the song, there's just that one video on TH-cam of someone filming Mustis playing it on a Piano.
    "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" also has a "Forces of the Northern Light" live version with good audio quality on TH-cam. Maybe at some point do a video where you look at both the regular song (the live version, or the album version), and then as a small extra also the Piano version from Mustis?

      I've thought about it but honestly I'd rather check out something new from them than revisit a song. However I should take the time to listen to a proper recording of this on my own. Thanks for reminding me to do that!

      @@CriticalReactions I totally hear that! I would highly recommend instead going for another song from the Forces of the Northern Night concert, perhaps Mourning Palace or Gateways.

    I don’t know how you choose the songs for your respective themes but for this theme I’d suggest some baroque pop. Something off of St Vincent-Actor like The Strangers or The Party beautifully incorporate orchestral elements into art pop songs

    You are correct sir. A lot of instruments have been snuffed out. I recommend listening to the studio version. They recorded this album with an orchestra and a choir, there's no artificial sound on the album in my opinion, you're the expert though. The production however made the instruments so sharp that you cannot tell, but I've been following them for the past 20 years. They posted numerous videos with an orchestra and a choir during studio recording.

    Went through DB's discog years ago. Fun band, though I'm never quite sure how seriously I should take them. They really lean into the cheesier, over-the-top aspects of symphonic black metal. I guess they're that sub-genre's version of Immortal, who also don't take themselves and the whole genre too seriously. Anyway, I wouldn't rate this as one of their better tracks, but it fits the week's theme well and it's really nice hearing them with a full orchestra/choir rather than just synths. Audio quality definitely isn't the best, which is a shame because DB's later albums tend to be some of the best produced in black metal. Live recordings are always a hit-or-miss affair... done right they can sound better than studio, but it's all about the venue and who's working the sound/mixing board.

      Take it however you want? If you like the music, listen to it, dig it, support them.. I guess? They've been doing this since the 90's and they are quite serious about their music, that's for sure. I know Shagraths brother and have met Stian a couple of times. Great guy... passionate about his music and band.

    • @MaaZeus
      @MaaZeus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it matter. Back in the 90s when they were young and angry they probably were more serious. As in, not really being satan worshippers as that aspect has always been more symbolic than theistic but more like an act of rebellion. Nowadays as adults? I am sure it is just a schtick.

    Oh please do finally SepticFlesh. "Dark Art" or "Prometheus" would be nice. Their guitarist Christos Antoniou is an orchestral music composer and he also has his own neo-classical band called Chaostar

    With that theme you should probably check out Blind Guardian. Like "At the Edge of Time" from the album "Beyond the Red Mirror" th-cam.com/video/iJvm-W8ktQM/w-d-xo.html
    Or the "Grand Parade" from the same album, also continous orchestral use: th-cam.com/video/uw-8nxo3oKU/w-d-xo.html
    But generally speaking they have A LOT of orchestral stuff incorporated in their more recent albums. They even made a pure orchestral album as a spin off, without electric guitars or drums. Just the prague orechestra and the vocalist.

  • @thegrimner
    @thegrimner 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The orchestrations are superb and are kind of hard to screw up, but my main issue with this period in Dimmu's history is how "tame" the metal instrumentation is. You nailed it when you said that everything sounded more like a backdrop to the orchestra and that's because the metal bit is rather unadventurous, everything that stands out is happening with the choir and the synphonic grandeur.
    It's probably something that will also show up in your commmentaries if Therion or Septic Flesh are among the choices, as they can also suffer from the same. Though earlier period Septic Flesh was undoubtedly more experimental than what they'd later become.
    Hoping against hope that someone suggested to you Bal Sagoth, they definitely fit the week's theme even though all orchestra is done through synths. They're a mix between graphic novel aesthetics, Conan the Barbarian short stories and Lovecraft horror heavily influenced by Basil Pouledoris soundtracks. They'd be a very interesting watch.

  • @vanitazazas

    It's an open air concert, the mix will not be as good as in a venue made for sound. Certain freequenzies will therefore simply disappear.
