HI EVERYONE HERE IS A SIMPLE MOD I MADE TO MY WOOBIE / PONCHOLINE TO TURN THE PONCHO INTO A SORT OF FIELD GRADE GREAT COAT FOR WET COLD WEATHER WEAR..THANKS FOR WATCHING
I've always wondered why the liner never had a head hole like the poncho. I grew up in a military town and we had surplus gear all over. The liner is great for summer sleeping. It's terrible to leave in a carpeted stair well for your brother to slip on and slide down the stairs 😱😅 the woobie is an interesting and useful creation. I might try it as an under quilt for a hammock soon.
A poor man's Swagman Roll! I went ahead and bought a Swagman Roll because I don't have the skills and a sewing machine to do this, but it is a great idea! Thanks.
Great idea and very simple. You could keep some safety pins on the woobie to close up the hole if you need a blanket plus the safety pins could be used as fish hooks in a survival situation. Thanks for the video Bear and I wish you both well.
Great video, Bear! I love the Old Ways videos you and Blackie make and I think it's fantastic that you are doing your own channel and that Blackie is lending a hand. As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.
Some people will wrap up in a tarp and place a candle in front of them on the ground under the tarp for added warmth. Doing that here is a fire hazard.. Thanks for watching..!
Thanks Bear for the ideas. I always enjoy that in Old Ways, you have a sense and ability to describe the history behind a memory or renewed concept. You better send Blackie along, before he starts charging a cameraman fee... Like a stray pup, if you start feeding him hot dogs, he might never go away...
It's amazing how efficient this is for holding body heat. We don't get much snow down here but a hard winter rain can be brutal too. Give it a try.. I think you'll probably like the result. 🐻
Great video Bear..candle No..uco mini lantern with beeswax Yes Sir..I've called it my Underdog..after the cartoon....blackie& Bear DOS Amigos or just blackbear ..good to see friendship.
Bear , Outstanding Video and Tip and Trick thanks for sharing. I appreciate you sharing your time and knowledge and wisdom. You Are The Master Woodsman and Bushcrafter. Tim L. U.S. Army Vet and Old Boy Scout, Woodsman and Bushcrafter.
Great job bear..!! I have 3 woobies, 1 of which I put a zipper in, unzip when using as a poncho, zipped up when using as a ranger roll.. Look forward to more videos, if nothing else but to just remember how things were in the good'ole days..!! Semper-fi sir..
Good to see you guys. I use el cheapo rubberized rain coat. It is not durable at all, but it is very affordable, and easy to find at local stores. I always choose gear that I can find easily. Online shopping will not be possible during an emergency
You make a good point, but there are still some surplus stores around where you can buy these two items. Just check the prices online first, because some prices can vary with availability. In an emergency, you can get a poncho in the camping section at Walmart. They won’t have a woobie in stock, but you could replace it with a micro -fleece blanket or throw even if you have to cut it down to fit. And sew on some tie-cords, when you get a chance. Another idea, heavier, but warmer, would be the wool moving blankets from Harbor Freight.
I have a Swagman roll that fits inside my poncho, it has a hood and is in itself treated to be waterproof. Only problem is, layering it under the poncho is almost too warm unless you are in near freezing weather. I’ll be using one of my woobie to try this mod. Thanks, Bear.
Great video Bear, good to see your channel up and going, I found one on Amazon that was a knockoff woobie that had the hole plus hood in it already, I didn't purchase it as it wasn't exactly cheap, but this will make a great alternative, not sure why that wasn't done from the get go, never did figure that out.
@@baileybrunson42 your absolutely right. Glad to see you got your own channel, but I love you and Blackie together, really good information. And good conversation, like sitting there with two good friends listening.
Randy, it's our pleasure to do the Old Wayz series. I never dreamed we'd be 23 installments into it and still doing them. I'm going to continue to be on his channel and he will be here on mine. I don't know where you live but if you can, try and come to his Gathering next month.. When you've been friends as long as we have.. friendship becomes family.
Hello Bear and Blackie- this is a great idea for those eastern woodlands colder rain days in the field. That wooby combined with the outer poncho shell will keep the elements out and trap the heat in, and thats what you need when maintaining that core temp. Did you hand sew that or with a machine? Thanks you guys- be safe out there-
Thank you HagMan. It's machine sewn with a taped collar to prevent fraying. You're correct, it is incredibly warm. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching..!
Do you have any experience with modern rip stop ponchos? I recently bought Helikon Tex rip stop poncho but it is paper thin. I am really nervous about wearing it while walking through a dense forest. It is not cheap so I would not test it's durability this way. No luck... I have been using soviet plash palatka. Very durable but I was VERY strange looking wearing it. No way of using it in Poland. All them NPCs with their dogs would call police on me sooner or later
Wojtek, I don't care much for the thin ponchos either. Never found one that would last. I've heard a lot of good things about the plash palatka but never tried one.. I would imagine that style isn't very popular in Poland. 🐻
Tim, I thought initially it was a US Milsurplus.. Blackie 🤠 and I got to looking at it closer and we think now it's German surplus.. Thanks for watching..!

Invest in something that will last. Surplus gear can be very reasonable price wise and you won't have to replace it every other time you use it.. 🐻
