I think we cry every time we watch Secretariat because it is the only time in our lives we have ever seen pure unadulterated innocence attain perfection.
I've always been such a fan of Man O' War that, until I saw the running (on TV) of the Belmont Stakes in '73, I refused to admit to myself that Secretariat may have been as great as the great one himself. Now, I can't watch his race footage without weeping at the thought that both Secretariat & the other "Big Red", both of these wonderful creatures sent by God, are no longer with us except in memory. I have truly come to appreciate what TH-cam allowed us to preserve for the world to experience
I will never forget the thrills I felt in the Triple Crown Races in 1973 of Secretariat. I only wish I could have seen this magnificent horse in person. His memory lives on as the greatest racehorse of all.
My wife and I went to Saratoga Springs for the Travers. Big Red had a cold and was a scratch. Because the crowd was so big he was saddled and came out for a pass through. He stopped ten yards in front of me. His eyes were on me and he looked like Ali, I am the greatest. He backed it up on the track. GOAT.
I was 20 in 1973 and a big horse racing fan we used to have a cookout & party on the first Saturday in May i truly believe secretariat was the greatest horse that ever lived & we will never see another one like him 🏇
I just came across this video and it made my week, my month. I was at the Belmont in 1973 and it was the most exciting day in my life. I didn’t even know about him before that day, my husband took me there as an anniversary gift. My husband had always liked horse racing and he knew people in the business who got us tickets. And we were only in Philadelphia so it wasn’t a long trip. Then a red horse appeared, a red horse, I’ve never seen a red horse and he moved like the wind. He was like a speeding train, like a bullet, and he was running past the finish line like a bullet and kept on running. And then when he turned around and came back and I could see him and they took that mask off his face and you could see his beautiful head that gorgeous face, I fell in love, and I have been in love ever since.
I remember watching a newscast where they went to Clair one farms to interview Penny Cheney and she was in front of the pen holding Secretariat . He clearly knew that this was all about him and was clearly talking and posing for the cameras. I wish someone would post this...because it clearly showed his personality. I was just a teen when I saw him run and I still cry when I see his races.
SECRETARIAT IS THE KING OF HORSERACING,AND HE WAS SMART WITH A CHARMING PERSONALITY.THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER HORSE LIKE HIM. 2016 HE STILL HOLDS THE RECORD IN ALL 3 RACES. RIP SECRETARIAT, YOU ARE FOREVER LOVED AND MISSED.
I see at 9:04 thy have the finally updated Preakness time of 1:53 FLAT as result of recent lengthy high tech analysis of film and comparison with Canonero's time. Secretariat true record, setting records in ALL 3 races, run in the 5 week Triple Crown.
@@scottpraml8458 You have to give it up to his jockey extraordinaire Ron Turcotte ! No doubt that Secretariat was exceptional. However, it's the jockey who is on board going about 45 MPH. He has to find that sweet spot of gravity to stay on, make snap decisions and keep everyone safe! You have to love an equine who usually breaks dead last and comes out a winner in record time❤🏇👑
@@lired70 i do agree....as in life we all try to achieve perfection ....i must say, i have always tried to use secretariat as a pure example of how i live my life..And yes i kiss the ground Penny Chenery walks on..What a strong brilliany elegant woman..
@@scottpraml8458 Agreed! Penny Chenery is The First Lady of Horse Racing. She contributed so much. She was charming and dedicated! Did you know that her father Christopher Chenery was inducted in to the Racing Hall of Fame last year. Sadly posthumously. It was his genius that discovered that the mare was the most important part of the breeding equation! There is so much more to Secretariat than just speed. He was an equine enigma!
Secretariat means so much to millions of people. Still in awe of him. Magnificent!

The Diamond Realm I cry my eyes out every time.
No one could have said it better.
Isn’t it amazing how many people are still brought to tears all these years later watching his videos, like you said... perfection!!!
I think We cry because there will never be another like him in our lifetime! We were blessed to have witnessed his races...period!
I love this video. Thanks for creating & sharing it with us.

Secretariat is my king
i love reading all these personal thoughts.......it is the sport of kings...
It seem to me that sham got injured in this race. He was so good but not good enough around big red
Sham broke a bone in one of his legs trying to keep up with secretariat, he never raced again
Can i hve the account of the fan club from secretariat?
I got to pet him as a yearling....I had no idea what I was doing.
you lucky duck......
I was in Los Angeles, watching KNXT Channel 2, as they would broadcast the stakes races on Saturdays. I loved it and I burn my Booker that year.
Even his name is regal!
Yes. Love him, he was not just a horse, he was Secretariat.
he certainly was perfection...Imagine if he ran as a 4 year old...... we can only dream......never know......i love regal.....
